I'm liking the Rangers so far this year. It's refreshing to see a young team (I think they said the 5th youngest in the league on TV the other night) playing like a team. They're still making some mistakes in their own end, but Henrik has been bailing them out. Hopefully over time those will go away.

Looks like the Leafs have another player that everyone can hate again(see Tucker, Domi). Hellwig(sp?) gets three more games for the hit on Pietrangelo(BTW a former or maybe still Niagara Icedog).
Ryan now needs to go 41 games without a major to expunge his record. If not he keeps adding the games to the suspensions. It's 3 now, next would be 4 etc etc.

Blackhawks fire Savard after 4 games, hire Quenneville
By Pierre LeBrun

Updated: October 16, 2008, 12:44 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks fired head coach Denis Savard just four games into the season on Thursday, replacing him with NHL coaching veteran Joel Quenneville.
"I'm disappointed but I guess it's the nature of the business," Savard said from his Chicago home Thursday.
"I know I was doing a good job, I'm dedicated to my work. Obviously they felt they had to make a change, so what can you do."
Savard, who was in the last year of his contract, was told he'd been fired Thursday morning by GM Dale Tallon.
"I knew I had to do well this year. We talked this summer and I was aware of that," Savard said.
In a prepared statement, the team said firing Savard -- one of the franchise's greatest players -- was not easy.
"This was an extremely hard day for this organization and for me personally," Tallon said. "Denis is forever a part of our organization. We made a tough decision that we strongly feel is the right one as we continue to evaluate our team and create a championship caliber organization that can sustain success."
Quenneville, according to Tallon, "brings us a wealth of experience and a winning track record that will have an immediate and lasting impact."
Quenneville, who had been working as a scout for the Blackhawks, coached the Colorado Avalanche from 2005 through 2008 and led the St. Louis Blues for seven seasons (1996-2004). He has a 438-283-118 career record, including a 44-31-7 mark in Colorado last season.
Led by sophomore stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks have high hopes to make it back into the playoffs this season. They lost their first three games before finally winning 4-1 over Phoenix on Wednesday night.
"They promised to bring a Stanley Cup here, and they felt maybe I wasn't their guy. It's very well understood," said Savard.
"The only thing I can say is that last year I thought I did a heck of a job with our young kids," added Savard. "Eight to 10 rookies in our lineup. We had a bit of a slow start this year but I thought the team was on the right track. I guess it goes with the territory. As a coach you're judged on wins and losses."
Savard posted a 65-66-16 record in parts of three seasons as coach of the Blackhawks.
A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player, he had 473 goals and 865 assists in 1,196 career games with the Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning.

"The Swede became the third player in NHL history to score a hat trick in his first game, joining Alex Smart of the Montreal Canadiens (Jan. 14, 1943) and Real Cloutier of the Quebec Nordiques (Oct. 10, 1979).Lucky I picked him up for the fantasy pool:D"

I was in no way trashing his career rather I find it interesting that this has been made a bigger deal of. I love hockey but the NHL has a way of sweeping things under the rug if noone gets hurt. To me no punishment for these kinds of offenses makes it seem like the NHL doesn't care unless someone dies.

Personally I would have a very tough policy on this kind of thing. Suspension without pay(1st offense)...Indefinite suspension(Possible Expulsion) and forfeiture of contract(2nd offense). Everybody in the league would fall under the same disciplinary procedures(President-Stick boy). Like you said everyone gets one chance to make a mistake but the second is another issue.
Queenville hasn't been found guilty yet as far as I know but in the event that he has been my punishment would follow 1st offense guidelines(as I can't find any information as to whether or not he has previous convictions)
I have seen too many people affected by drunk driving..overall there is no justification anyone can use to substantiate the possibility of lose of life that drinking and driving propagates. To me its like looking down the barrel of a loaded gun, its just something I wouldn't do. This is something I feel passionately about...come to think of it I may write a paper on this for my sport policy class. All in All its just my :2 and really what to they matter in the grand scheme of things:D

Did you take a shot to the head last night time Tom:D:D:D:D or maybe it was just unclear the way that I wrote things.
1st offense I would have suspension without pay(set amount of games 10, 15 who knows). Not the end of a career just a the NHL taking a firm stance saying this not acceptable.

The young Blackhawks can count on one thing. With Elizabeth (Joel's wife) Quenneville's family business as one the largest tobacconists in the world, their coach will enjoy the occasional cigar after a game.
And, Lemieux says, he shares.
"They were free and they were good," he said. "If we won, we got to smoke. If they win, they can smoke."

From ESPN.com:
Marian Gaborik's agent, Ron Salcer, has gone to great lengths in recent days, including talking to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun, to dispel what he says are misconceptions about how much money his client is looking for and/or been offered by the Minnesota Wild.
Fair enough. But who cares?
The issue isn't whether Gaborik is looking for $9 million or $10 million annually over six or seven or eight years; the bottom line is, he isn't worth a fraction of that. He's not worth it to the Wild, and unless another GM takes leave of his senses (hey, it happens more than one might imagine), no one will come close to giving Gaborik that kind of money.
Although immensely talented, Gaborik is injury-prone and has a history of disappearing come playoff time. Witness his spectacular fade last spring when he tallied just one assist in six games of the Wild's first-round loss to the Colorado Avalanche. In this salary-cap world, few teams can afford to pay a franchise player to perform at less than a franchise-player level, and they certainly can't afford to do that over seven or eight years.
As attractive as Gaborik's skills might be, his inability to lead the Minnesota Wild anywhere close to contention will be a giant red flag to every other team in the NHL. Or it should be. The good news for Minnesota GM Doug Risebrough is that his team has yet to lose in regulation while playing mostly without Gaborik, who is hurt again. That means there's little external pressure to move Gaborik in the near future. The bad news: At some point, Risebrough may end up having to dump the gimpy Slovak forward for far less than one might have imagined. Gaborik can become an unrestricted free agent in July.

I bet Valiquette was thinking shutout with less than 8 minutes in the game. It looked like the Rangers tried to protect their lead and skated around like six goalies. Never works.

Andrew Ladd has played 5 solid games in a row after being moved to the 3rd line, and I think he is solid in a roster spot at this point, 2 goals and 3 points last night, named the game's #1 Star. I am really impressed with the way he has stepped up....thought you would like to know. :)

None necessary, it was a great game live! Hawks salvage a point after playing 10 of the worst minutes of the season to start the game. Penalties in OT are killers, 4 on 3 creates too much open ice and are so much tougher to defend than 5 on 4s.

Exactly....what happens when Toews and Kane are done with the first contracts, and want their due? An excellent point, but not a worry until next year at least.
The Hawks could free up $10 Million+ by dumping Sopel, Byfuglien, and trading one of their goalies (preferably Huet at this point) and bringing up either of the excellent prospects (Crawford or Mitti) from the Icehogs.

DALLAS -- Sean Avery was suspended indefinitely by the NHL on Tuesday, hours after the Dallas Stars forward made a crude reference to former girlfriends while talking with reporters.
"I completely support the league's decision to suspend Sean Avery," Stars owner Tom Hicks said in a statement. "Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so."
Throw the POS out of the league as far as I am concerned. :2

reaching with a stick instead of playing the body
That's what happens with a forward playing D. Although I think Toews knew it was a forward and took advantage of it with that move. Very smart.

Isles Drop another to Philly. I watched the game on NASN last night and it was a great game with their third goalie in net so I am not to pissed. At least they played with a lot of heart. I can't help but think what could have been if "Mad Mike" Milbury hadn't completely ruined this team. I look arounfd the league and see so many fantastic players that started or played early in thier career on the Island. Oh well maybe we are finally headed in the right direction.

Nice win for the Hawks tonight, Khabby comes back and the Hawks score two in the 3rd for a come from behind win.
Cool story out of Washington too!
Johnson not shaken by rotating backups as Capitals rout Senators
WASHINGTON -- The tall guy holding the camera in the Washington Capitals' locker room works for the team's Web site.
Two and a half hours earlier, the same guy was sitting on the Capitals' bench serving as an emergency backup goalie.
Keeping the camera focused, Brett Leonhardt shook his head in disbelief as he watched Brent Johnson answer questions about -- who else? -- Brett Leonhardt. Johnson might have been the top performer in Friday night's 5-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators, but the true star was the 6-foot-7 former college hockey goalie who had to suit up during the first 10 minutes of the game because of an injury.
"Every dream come true," Leonhardt said. "Growing up in Canada, playing since I was 4. It was just very surreal. It was a blur, went by real quick."
Leonhardt's moment in the spotlight overshadowed the return of Sergei Fedorov and Mike Green to the lineup in a dominating performance by the Capitals. Alexander Semin, Brooks Laich and Green all scored for the first time this month, Alex Ovechkin got his 16th and 17th goals, and Johnson made 32 saves to win his fourth straight decision.
But no injury scenario was stranger than the series of events that led to the lanky Leonhardt dressing for the game. A Division III goalie in college and a Capitals employee for about a year, the 26-year-old Leonhardt signed an amateur tryout contract after backup Jose Theodore injured a hip flexor during the morning skate.
If Leonhardt had actually played, he would have tied Ben Bishop of the St. Louis Blues as the tallest goalie ever to see action in an NHL game. Instead, he simply became an instant celebrity.
"We had a little chat about what happens during warmup, and he was like, 'What? What am I going to do?" Johnson said. "It was pretty funny."
Leonhardt's brief career -- for which he will receive no money -- ended when Simeon Varlamov, recalled from AHL affiliate Hershey, arrived midway through the first period

I just finished watcing the Isles/Ragskirts game and must same although the Isles lost it was a great game. No real complaints. A hard hitting first period followed by a terrible 18:30 of the second period than two shifts and POW GOAL!!! My only problem is would someone please tell the Islanders that there are THREE freakin' periods in hockey!!!!! McD is doing pretty good as a backup on an extended cycle but I think he comes out to much and flops around a bit to much as well. The Isles showed a lot of heart and soul out there and I am thankful Trent is alright. One shining hope in this season is we have a good chance at getting Tavares

Absolutely Bush-League the way Crosby jumped him. There is a code in the NHL, and Crosby ignored it. If he had let McLean square up, Brett would have beat him like a rented mule.
Looks like McLean got cut when Sidney pile-drove Brett's head into the ice. I look forward to the next time Florida plays the Pens, hopefully someone will give it right back.
