Thanks, Al... but Mr. Broody has accepted the challenge. (Don't think he is a Bruins fan by nature, but he dissed my 'Canes chances, so it is on! :D
Maybe barney would take on one of the Massholes if they feel up to it. :tu
As I am waiting for a fiver from one of the great Devil's fans here due to our friendly wager on that incredible first-round series...
I am willing to do the same with a Bruins fan. I will be happy to put my bundled and rolled leaves where my mouth is with the first Boston Bruins fan that PMs me and wants to put five cigars on it (not dog rockets, but they don't have to be super premiums either).
Looking forward to a good series... hoping Carolina can surpass Montreal's meager efforts and... who knows? There is a reason they play the games, you know? Ask the Sharks! :D
If you are looking for a bet Barney just bring it.
I could stand to part with 5 sticks. I could definetly benefit from an EASY fiver.
I posted your post in the Masshole banter thread Joe to see if I could get you a bet. he looks of it they are all talk up in bean town.

How about old man Fedorov, he almost looked 19 again in that 3rd period....good for him. I gotta say, as much as I like to slam him, Avery played a helluva game too, very strong along the boards with the puck.
Holy Moley in NJ.....crazy ending there, too! Congrats Joe, quite a finish from your guys! That is the problem with Avery. He could play real hockey, but he reverts to being a punk most of the time.

Hoping the Hawks and Wings win in the West. In the East, Caps and Cans, but doubt both of those will happen.
I think the Wings will be able to put away the Ducks in 5 or 6 games, depending on how they come out in the first game. I always think it takes teams a bit of time after they have had a long break in the playoffs. I think 3 days is a good break, but anything more than that, and I start worrying about getting back the intensity. There is a huge difference between preparing, and actually doing.
I hope Chigago beats Vancouver, it's been long overdue for the Blackhawks. It's great to see them getting better. I remember some of the great playoff series between them in the late 80s and early 90s. Heck I would sneak out of bed to watch them on a crappy black and white TV in my room as a kid.
In the East, it's great to see New Jersey go down. They always seem to play the Wings tough. I kind of like to see the Canes do well, if for no other reason than the Karmanos/Detroit connection, and my step-dad works for CompuWare. However, I love the original six teams more. Go Bruins.
Caps/Pens, honestly I couldn't care less. I guess some of this boils down to the fact that I think the only team left that can beat the Wings in a series is the Ducks. Hopefully the Wings can make it past them and cruise on to another Stanley Cup.
I'm sure the flaming will commence now....:fu:fu:fu

It amazes me that Avery gets more bad press (here and in the papers/news than that "hit" Brashear's pulled on Betts.
Is Avery an a$$? No doubt, but come on.

Man Wilsons press conference yesterday was intresting. He is always mr. calm. He was not for the first time in years. He said there would be BIG changes. The ownership said his job was safe and Wilson said the coaching staff was fine. I think Joe and Marleau are in the crosshairs.
In a post game interview Marleau stated he had a stained acl. Wilson when asked about this said I dont want to hear any excuses. If you arent hurt at this time of year there is something wrong with you. Appears Boyle has earned the captain C and Marleau has lost it. Wilson even implied the team may get rid of more than a few key plaayers and not be as competitive next year.

I saw the quotes that they had, and I could tell he was not a happy guy. They would show him during stoppages in the 3rd period of game 6, and he had a look of disgust on his face. He wants results, and he should get them with what he has done for the team. I hope ownerships keeps him around for a long time, as he has a desire to win, and makes good decisions. He say anything about ticket prices?
I thought from the first post-game interviews, that Boyle deserved the C. I like Marleau a lot, but maybe he needs to be out of the spotlight. I still don't think they should trade him, as he is the best performing player in the playoffs. Everyone got on him a couple of years ago for his showing in Detroit, but the series before that he played well, and in the Detroit series nobody did.
It is going to be an interesting offseason, and I am sure that there will be a lot of changes, either in quantity, or magnitude. I would bet money on one of the core players being gone, as well as one or two secondary players. I don't see them keeping Cheecho, especially with the way Setoguchi played. Cheecho hasn't been right since that hit in the playoffs against Nashville. I'm actually excited for the offseason to see how everything ends up.
-----------------------------------
Can't wait till 6 o'clock tonight! I find the Hawks to be an exciting team to watch, hopefully they can put some past Luongo. Canucks are going to have to make sure they don't take nearly as many penalties though, can't do that with the Hawks.

Unbelievable. Come back from a 3 goal deficit, and loose the game with 1:13 left. The trailing guy stopped skating for the hawks, and cost them that goal. After the initial save, he stopped striding and glided in instead of covering his man. Turned into a good game though, and the Hawks showed they can score on Luongo. It is a start though, build the confidence that you can score on him.

Go to 1:10, and that is where they show it in slow motion. To me it looks like he leads with the forearm, and swings it while hitting. Need more angles to be 100% sure, but based on what I saw, it was an intent to injure.

To be honest with you I don't think Carolina has a chance?
The B's got great depth at all positions, and a lot more fire power. The Carolina players were scared shitless of getting hit by Lucic.
Staal has been a non factor, he can't do anything against Chara.
The key is for the B's to stay out of the penalty box.
But this is the playoffs a hot goalie can steal a series.

No matter what happens in the playoffs, Sharks got the better end of the deal. I can see why they let him go for basically nothing, but without that trade, who knows where the Sharks would be right now.
I wouldn't mind seeing him go at all, and would rather see him go before Marleau. I think Marleau plays to his ability in the postseason, while Thornton has the potential to completely change the dynamics of the game, and doesn't. I also don't see Marleau keeping the C, which I don't think is a big deal for him at all, in fact he would probably rather NOT have the extra pressure.
That first overtime for the Wings/Ducks game was exciting. Refs kept their whistles in their pockets, but that is expected. I can't believe the Ducks are getting so outhit. Wings did prove my point to go high on Hiller though.

The only 6 period game I ever attended resulted in a Hawks loss, obviously many years ago. They cut off beer sales halfway through the 2rd period, so by the 3rd OT I was just ready for it to be over, win or lose....of course, that game was a 7:30 start, so it was a bit later.

WASHINGTON (AP) -Alex Ovechkin's first playoff hat trick was cause for celebration, worthy of so many red caps that Sidney Crosby wanted fans to be told to stop throwing them.
Minutes later, Crosby notched his first postseason hat trick, a consolation prize in a loss. Less than a half-dozen pieces of headgear made it to the ice.
Ovechkin nailed a one-timer from the left circle that beat Marc-Andre Fleury on a power play with 7:07 left, then skated between the circles before unleashing a slap shot that sailed past Fleury's glove with 4:38 remaining for his third goal of the game and seventh of the postseason. After the first wave of hats came a second wave, prompting Crosby to speak to the referee about the long delay.
''People kept throwing hats,'' Crosby said. ''And I was just asking if he could make an announcement to ask them to stop.''
Crosby gave the Penguins leads of 1-0 and 2-1. His third goal came on a power play in the final minute after Fleury was pulled for an extra attacker, giving Crosby an NHL-leading eight in the playoffs...........
What a F**king brat. NHL's poster boy is nothing more than a huge spoiled crybaby!

Yeah, that's a bit silly. I don't mind Crosby myself, but that's pretty bad. If it favors anyone, which I doubt it really does, it would favor the Pens because it stops Washington's momentum. It's a free timeout to regroup.

exactly Al. You know damn well he would not be asking the ref to do a damn thing if it was in pittsburgh and it was his hattie. The funny thing is that Ove would not have asked the refs to stop it if it was reversed. He would likely just be laughing and smiling like he always is and saying its great for the game to have this happen in the playoffs.
while I think some of Oves hits are questionable, and he gets away with a little more than most, He is an amazing player who plays with heart and loves the game. Ever notice how much you seem him smile out there and how little you see crybaby smile and laugh. I love seeing the little kids at the rink rocking yellow laces. If the kids are any indication in Cali Ove is more popular than Sid by a lot

I am not a Pittsburgh fan... and not particularly a fan of Crosby, but I can't help cutting him some slack. He is only 21 years old... guess I'm not too old to remember what a putz I was at 21 - full of piss and wind. And I didn't have the hopes of a professional sports team and a city like Pittsburgh depending on me. :D
My son is 20 and a pretty good kid... but I don't think he could handle all of that pressure - especially with full-grown men trying to take his head off every night. I was such a hot-head at that age, I would have tried to stab somebody with my skate by now! :r

Hard on him? No, I have a hard-on for him.
Ever since the brat took the "C" it showed what he's made of. He should of said, thank you very much Mr. Lemieux but I can't accept it, I haven't earned it, many other men in this room deserve it.
Actually now that I think about it I fault his parents as well. If he were raised right a sentence similar to the one above would have come out of his mouth. And, if it didn't, when he called the old man to tell him he was given the C, he should have been told to go respectfully give it back.
He accepted the responsibilities when he took that C and all the money. The fans that were throwing there $20 hats on the ice deserve his respect as they are the ones that provide his millions.
He needs to sit down and have a large portion of humble pie. And someone should go punch his dad right in the kisser.
Good thing it's not Monday or I really would have told you how I feel. :D

See my problem is that if the ref doesn't blow the whistle and an illegal goal goes in (like one that's covered and gets chipped in anyway) it will be reviewed and overturned. When the ref blows the whistle because he can't see the puck, only due to the fact he's 15-20ft out of position, the play is dead. Now even though the goal was legit, it is disallowed and can't be reviewed. This could easily swing the series, not only the one game.
Through 30 minutes it seemed the Duck's D was winning. However, in the last two periods the Wings outshot the Ducks 35-9, 17-6 and 18-3 respectively. Granted not all were quality scoring chances, but I think the Wings more than held their own for at least half the game. The Wings just need to put a full 60 minutes together.

Fans like you make me laugh. The game is 60 minutes long. You are blaming the loss on the ref? Now you are possibly blaming them loosing the series on one early whistle. That is such a homer statement. Some times the whistles help sometimes they dont. They rarely determine the winner of a game or a series. You seem to have forgotten that the players are the ones who determine that. Blaming the ref is the crutch of the looser. They have been doing it for ever. Hell got to blame someone right. Easier to blame the ref then analyze the game understand what occurs in a game and realize the team had ample opportunity to win and loose the game.
The PPs were 7-6 advantage detroit, the shots on goal were 46-24 advantage det. Det got two late PPs in the third and did not convert. Detroit carried the play for much of the game. Hiller was better then them. Thats why they lost. If the Goal is allowed it is not a winning goal only a tie. They still end up in overtime. You know what happened in game 2.
The fact is the Hiller is carrying the Ducks. The shots Det is getting on Hiller the ducks are diving and scraping to get the rebounds out to the point or out of the zone. It is actually pretty nice to watch from a fan of the game perspective. He stopped 45 shots on net and pulled some saves out his arse. Was this the only early whistle in this or any other series? No. It took 60 minutes for Det to loose the game, much longer in game 2. You going to blame the refs for the overtime loss in game 2 also?
Sorry no hugs and kisses here.

So what if Hiller has it covered, Hossa chips at it, puck goes in, ref is in the same position except with a slow whistle, then the Wings go on to win in OT? You're going to tell me neither you nor the Ducks would complain? And you're telling me that it wouldn't change the series?
Come down from the hockey high horse a little. I enjoyed the game. The Wings weren't the aggressor all the way through. Had they been, they probably would have won anyway. Still that's not the point. Had the call been controversial it would have been one thing. This call could not be argued to be correct except by a blind person. There's no debate the the ref blew the call with 1:04 left and it cost them the game. "If the Wings did this or that" doesn't matter. We all know if they played the aggressor for 60 min they probably would have won. My complaint was that the ref made multiple mistakes. First, he was out of position. Second, even in bad position he blew the play dead; knowing that if he was mistaken (about where the puck was) that replay couldn't overrule his whistle. Had he let the play go, even in my reversed scenario, replay could have been used to make sure the right call was made.
Anyway, no hard feeling. Just fans talking hockey.

High horse? how about you stop :crutch: on one whistle in a 60 minute game, where the goalie stood on his head. How about you give Hiller the credit he deserves. It was a great game. As Al pointed out it demonstrated the current issue with intent to blow the whistle and the blowing of the whistle. You know who has a legit complaint? Its not like you are buffalo vs the Stars with Brett Hull in the crease. Its one game. In a seven game series. The series is 2-1 and you are already blamming the refs for loosing the series. If Det is the better team they will take game 4 and the series.
As for would I complain if it was reversed? No. I dont like either team. I just dislike the wings more. Its a lesser of two evils for me.
You want to complain about the refing?
The ref was behind the net. Arm chair this one for me. Where would you have stood as the ref? You cantgo to the front, you cant be just behind untill the puck comes to the front of the net as he would be in the play. As soon as the play moves from the back the ref moves as quickly as he can to the rear of the net.

How come your not complaining about the refs not calling the elbow to the head by holmstrom on Wisniewski? Niedermyer took a hooking penalty just after that elbow. Possibly related. The Wings scorred on that PP. Amazing how looking at a game from one side you can miss something like this. A non call on the elbow to the head, a subsequent hook within seconds. The PP gets the Wings first and only goal. I will give you the blown goal if you give me back the PP which should have not occurred do to a missed call. :hf Looks like the Refs blew one in your favor their. Will just ignore that one though.

Seems to me that if this had happened to the Sharks your view just might be different.
That aside, you are correct that one call a series does not make. Detroit has to score plain and simple. You can outplay someone all day and still lose. Whistle's go back and forth. The only thing that counts is the final score.
I'm just hoping that this gets the Wings to play a full game like they have at the ends of games 2 & 3. If they do that odds on they will still win the series. But that remains to be seen.
That's my :2 anyway.

Looks like I have missed a pretty active thread here, tonight! :)
I am exhausted...had the good fortune of being at the RBC Center tonight for the Hurricanes OT win over the Bruins. Boston had some real strong moments, but did not seem to match the intensity of the 'Canes. Carolina put several more pucks on net... (41 to 23) and even the goals the Bruins scored were "effort" goals that I don't fault Cam Ward for - he played well.
Kudos to Thomas... he had to deal with a ton of shots and made some incredible saves - one behind him that was true robbery. He is the real deal.
I really like how Carolina is playing right now. I expected more from the Bruins tonight after getting shut-out at home. Cam Ward has been incredibly focused and our centers played very strong tonight. Staal played exceptionally well, I thought, and Brind'Amour had his best game of the post-season in my eyes.
Great series! If Carolina can get a win at home Friday night it would really put Boston on their heals. I'm just grateful that the Hurricanes are aquitting themselves better than Montreal did. I like our chances.
Thanks for the well-wishes, my friends. Boston is a super talented team and I expect they will step it up on Friday - but Carolina isn't going to give it to them by any means.
Go 'Canes!!! :wo

Im only a fan on Crosby because he's nice to look at but I'm a fan of Ovechkin for sure and I thought the comment Crosby made to the ref was hilarious! They played a heavily defensive game. They were trying to completely lock down the Hawks and it almost worked out for them.

Joe, saw this column today in the Chicago paper and thought you might like to see it.
Hawks will look back on crucial play as defining moment
The Blackhawks' season was only minutes from being over, for all intents and purposes.
They were on the verge of going down 3-1 in the series, needing a three-game winning streak with two games left on the road.
Goaltender Roberto Luongo was shutting them out and they were frustrated by a stifling Vancouver defense, which had rarely made a mistake.
And then Canucks defensemen Willie Mitchell tried a clearing attempt up the boards when there was space up the middle.
That was a mistake.
That's also when Andrew Ladd saved the game, the series, and maybe the season.
He could have been freelancing at that point, with less than three minutes remaining and the Hawks down a goal, but Ladd was exactly where he was supposed to be.
That's what coach Joel Quenneville preaches, to stick with the plan, play the system, and trust your teammates to do the same, but if players go off on their own, try to make fancy plays or be the hero, it doesn't work.
So Andrew Ladd was in his lane, clogging up the boards and doing his job.
He threw his body against the glass and stopped the puck, and with three Canucks surrounding him, he tucked a nifty, no-look pass between skates and handed it to a wide-open Martin Havlat, who walked toward the net and calmly beat Luongo high on the glove side for a 1-1 tie.
"Ladd made a great play there along the boards,'' Quenneville said. "There's always a defining moment in a series, in a game, in the playoffs, and in a season.''
Right now, as we sit here with a series knotted and two teams playing as close as two can, Ladd's steal along the boards is the play of the year.
It's the defining moment.
"Oh, no. That's us just sticking with the system,'' Ladd said, deflecting credit. "I think everybody in the room did. It just worked out for Marty and me right there, but everybody did it.''
After 57 minutes, the Hawks once again had proof that if they stuck to Quenneville's plan, stayed the course and believed in what he told them, they would prevail.
And they did in overtime, with Ladd scoring and the Hawks winning 2-1 and tying the series at 2-2 at the UC Thursday night.
They are right back in the series, only because they were still doing their jobs when it might have seemed hopeless.
"Even when it looked grim, the enthusiasm was there and the concentration was still there,'' Quenneville said. "That commitment to the system is amazing, rather than being a little on their own program.''
It was the kind of hockey Quenneville has been waiting to see from his young team the entire playoffs, and they executed nearly to perfection in Game 4.
They provided solid puck support, they cut down on turnovers and got the puck deep all night, but what they couldn't do was beat Luongo until they got a break, one that looked eerily similar to a play late in Game 1 of the Calgary series.
In that contest, Havlat also strolled out of the corner with the puck after it hit a couple skates and scored the tying goal when it looked like the Hawks were cooked.
That play changed the entire Calgary series and the course of the playoffs for the Hawks, and perhaps the Ladd play along the boards has as well.
Instead of being down 3-1, the series is tied and the Hawks have regained the momentum after nearly two full games of defensive dominance by Vancouver.
"We believe in each other and we believe in the opportunity,'' Quenneville said. "Sticking with the program and diligent, I guess we're accustomed to being in this situation, playing from behind.
"It's not the right way and it's not healthy, and I'd like to find out what we're like playing with a lead.''
After allowing goals by the bucketful in the first three games of this series, it was up to the Hawks to prove they could play genuine playoff hockey against a genuine playoff opponent, and for the first time in two series they did precisely that.
Sure, they had to come from behind again, but they seem completely comfortable doing that, meaning no game or series feels out of reach.
That confidence, along with the ability to win a 2-1 game in true defensive playoff posture - a new feature the Hawks hadn't displayed until Thursday - can take a team a very long way.
"We have a great coach and we really believe what he tells us,'' Ladd said. "It's kind of easy to do your thing and not give up when you know he has the answer.
"Hopefully, we've got the confidence and momentum now. I do know that we're back in it.''
Thanks in no small part to Andrew Ladd.

It does suck, but at least it is only an hour plane ride. The Western Conference has it so much worse with travel, there could never be back to back games in two different cities. And BOTH Pittsburgh and Washington are playing under the same conditions, so we will get to see who steps it up.

"Canes do look like they are on a mission. We were given little chance by the national media. Barry Melrose was the only national guy that I saw that gave us the edge in the series.
Hope folks will begin to realize that the Carolina Hurricanes are a serious team... 2006 Stanley Cup Champions with some great players and a fan base that has won us the reputation among the players as the loudest house in the NHL. Time for some respect. :tu
Bruins surprised me tonight. Losing their third game in a row? I expected them to show some more grit. Lost by multiple goals at home... lost the next game when I really expected them to come out strong... then lost tonight to a team that had a lot more jump. Outside of the second period, the 'Canes were the better team by far.
I know the series is not over, but if Boston doesn't find some heart, the Hurricanes will enjoy some rest before the next series. :wo

Tom, not a shock that this happened. There has been a mind set with the Bruins' ownership since the mid '70's that making the playoffs is enough. What compounded things this year was that the B's beat the Montreal Mafia in the first round so the season was a monster success. I gave up my season tickets 1 year into the new Garden because I found it to be a sterile and cold place but was thinking about getting them again. Will not do so because the B's mindset has not changed.

yes **** happens in hockey, however moving your leg to impact another players leg knee to knee is not part of the game. there is a vid from the right hand side of the rink that clearly shows that he moved his leg to hit gonchar.
for the record I'd have this stance no matter who was involved, Penguin, blackhawk or coyote.

Looked like Sergei put his leg out too to me, but we can agree to disagree. Regardless, I hope Gonchar is able to skate again today and that it is not a serious injury.
with the amount of pain that he was in i don't think he will be. even if there is nothing torn/broken (i'm hearing speculation of a turn mcl) the residual soreness will probably keep him out....like our PP can afford another difficulty to over come

WASHINGTON -- Yanni is singing a song of empathy for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.
The pop singer issued a statement Saturday reflecting his role in the scheduling of the teams' playoff series. Yanni's concert at the Penguins' Mellon Arena on Tuesday night is the reason the NHL put Game 4 on Friday in Pittsburgh and Game 5 in Washington on Saturday -- a back-to-back scenario that neither team likes.
Yanni didn't express apologies or regrets. He instead cited his experience "as a former national champion swimmer" for native country Greece.
"I empathize with the athletes competing in the NHL playoffs and understand the pressures under which they perform," the statement said.
Early in the series, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said it was "a shame" that the teams were forced to play back-to-back games, calling it "bad for the league, both fan bases and for the players."
For his part, Yanni thanked all involved -- particularly the Mellon Arena -- for "recognizing the importance of presenting the highest quality sports and entertainment to the fans of the city of Pittsburgh."
