Devils are looking pretty solid!

My Hurricanes lost a tough one to the Rangers the other night... but got a nice win at home against the hapless Lightning tonight. Carolina really needs to get their act together if they are going to make the playoffs. The are flirting with not making it... again.

Coyotes put up a good fight for the sharks last night. The west is going to be exciting near the end. And now the sharks are in first place in the league! I need to get center ice so I can watch all these games, though I did find a website that streams every pro sport on my computer, it isn't the same watching it on a 12 inch screen.

Ya I watch all my sport streaming but I have a 19 inch monitor in my small room hooked up to surround sound so Its not to bad.

I was watching the Panthers Habs Game last night(which the Habs played terrible)...In Florida $17.50 gets you a ticket to the game, parking, and some sort of combo meal(Drink hot dog and chips I think). Talk about an awesome price point and they still can't get any fans down there. It costs more for just a ticket to a Moose game in Winnipeg(AHL) which average around $20. Not to mention parking is $5 bucks and a combo $10ish. Twice as much for hockey that is a level below the NHL...crazy.

On a side note for my Organizational Theory class I'm righting a paper on the NHL's decision to expand in to non-traditional hockey markets.

I'm tempted to pick up a big monitor for when I stream games. I know I would get my monies worth, as that is basically all I watch on tv.

I think in some places it has actually worked out well, and in others, not so much. I don't know what is going through the lightning owner's heads though, it is like they are trying to loose. Trade Boyle and Luckowich, for essentially nothing, and then trade away the player they got for literally nothing. Good thing they got Vincent, but even that isn't helping them.

Big character win for the Hawks over the Sharks last night, especially after an apparent 2-0 lead became a 1-1 tie over the period of a few seconds. The NHL still has a couple goofy rules on the books, but the Hawks gutted out a tough win.

I wouldn't put it past them. They don't realize that you actually have to spend money to put a competitive team on the ice. Oh well, sharks steal again from another team! Still can't believe the Thornton deal.

Very strange rule, never seen anything like that. Sharks didn't play their best, and against a young fast team like the Hawks, you are going to loose. Love watching the Hawks play, as they are just so young. That one goal that was put in about 2 feet in front of the goal was simply amazing.

First time I have ever seen it as well....I guess since Cheechoo was bleeding like a stuck pig they thought they better.

Sharks let Dan Boyle sit the game to rest....he is a good penalty killing d-man and might have been a factor in (stopping) the Versteeg shorthanded goal. Regardless, a big confidence booster for the young Hawks. I didn't think SJ played bad at all, I thought Khabibulin stood on his head at times.

bugmenot

Towards the end of the game they played ok, but having watched them the entire season, they weren't skating too well. The last couple minutes got exciting, but Khabibulin managed to keep it out. Missing Boyle AND Luckowich hurts as they are paired as defenseman, but who knows what would have happened. I agree, it is a huge boost to the Hawks, especially beating the Sharks at home. I'm glad that the Hawks are leading the league in attendance. Kind of a shame the way they disappeared for awhile, but seems like the son taking over has a lot to do with it.

I'm hoping they end up meeting in the playoffs, as I think it would be exciting to watch two young teams go at it. What am I talking about though, I just love watching quality hockey, and talking about it with people who share the same passion as me. CA as a whole does not appreciate it, though San Jose certainly does.

I do like the Pens although I am a Islanders fan. I really like a lot of the players throughout the years but I think there is too much talent on tha team to be where they are so maybe a change was needed. Doesn't surprise me...Sergei was a piece of work when I worked in Hamilton last year. On one occasion he simply went up to the coach and said "no practice". This also falls in line with some of the comment Kovalev made about the younger players getting into trouble.

The Habs are imploding at the moment I'm not sure what the solution is.

Neutral zone trap
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The neutral zone trap is a defensive strategy used in ice hockey to prevent an opposing team from proceeding through the neutral zone (the area between the blue lines) to force turnovers. The strategy is generally used to level the playing field for teams that are not as offensively talented as their opponent, though the trap can also be used by teams simply looking to protect a lead late in the game.

The most recognizable implementation of the trap sees the defense stationing four of their players in the neutral zone and one forechecker in the offensive zone. As the offensive team starts to move up the ice, the forechecker (generally the centre) will cut off passing lanes to other offensive players by staying in the middle of the ice, forcing the puck carrier to either sideboard. The defensive wingers—typically placed on or near the red line—will be positioned by the boards to challenge the puck carrier, prevent passing, or even keep opponents from moving through. The two defencemen who are positioned on or near the blue lines are the last defence, and must stall the opposition long enough for the wingers to reset themselves and continue the trap.

The trap reached prominence with the New Jersey Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup victory, and has been widely criticized for reducing scoring and making the game less exciting for fans.[1] It has, however, proven to be very effective, especially in the playoffs.[citation needed] During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, serious discussion about opening the game to offense was done by both the NHL and NHL Players Association (NHLPA). Because it is easier to trap when engaging in obstruction and restraining fouls, such as hooking and holding, which slow the progress of faster players who can evade the trapping team, the NHL ordered officials to call every obstruction penalty, regardless of circumstance. The prohibition on two-line passes from behind a team's blue line to the other side of the red line was also lifted. Long passes are one method for breaking out of the trap, as it avoids the need to navigate through defenders in the neutral zone. With passes across the red line from behind the puck carrier's blue line permitted under the revised NHL rules, the effectiveness of the neutral zone trap is greatly diminished. Defensive minded teams have reverted to a "third man high" system where only two offensive players will commit down low, allowing the third to join the defense and impede progress across the blue line.

While I think the West is better than the East, once in the playoffs, it can be a disadvantage. Last year I don't think the sharks would have had a chance beating Detriot after going through the flames and stars, just too many hard games in a short period of time though.

One of my cigar buds is originally from St. Louis. The dude absolutely knows his sports trivia and is a complete baseball & hockey nut (probably why I like him!). I know it's killing him to watch the Blues right now, but I keep telling him... look at Chicago. They've made some changes in the front office, they're young & quick on the ice, they've got solid goaltending (Huet's gonna be the man), and they've been getting tougher and more physical, too (well, that last one might be a stretch, but you know what I mean). St. Louis will get there again, as well. And as long as the Wings are in the West (Bettman, you effin' rat!!!!) those are the rivalries that I'd really like to see again.

I hope so!! I've been waiting my whole life for a cup. Everytime we seem to have it together it blows up. 1999-2000 season the Blues win the Presidents' trophy with solid veterans and tons of young talent. The Laurie family killed this franchise. They purchased a solid team that was consistent and moving in the right direction. The following off season they let go all the young talent and buy as much "Star" power as they could. That was a huge mistake, just look at history. Remember the Rangers? All the star power and big names in the world doesn't mean you will have a great team. They lost the cohisiveness, the camaraderie, the flow, the know.
Anyway, thanks for the words of encouragement. :tu

Looks like he will go to either Pittsburgh, Montreal, or the Caps. But it will be a Eastern team and the Isles will get a high round draft.

Nice win for the Wings and Chris Osgood last night. Did any of you guys see the Downey/Janssen fight? With all of the BS & talk about trying to gradually sweep it out of the league, it was cool to just watch them let the guys throw. Not exactly Probert/Domi, but take a look for yourself.....

It seems as if hockey players are the most charitable and participate in more humane events than any of the other major sports.

Don't get me wrong, there's always a lot of stories of NFL, MLB and NBA players participating in their communities, but it seems as if NHL players go above and beyond.

The biggest thing for me is that the NHL players for the most part GET IT (giving back to the fans). Where is with the other 'big' sports, it's way too much about me and it's an inconvenience (again, there are exceptions).

Absolutely....the Blackhawks taking a side trip to their GM's father's funeral this season was a prime example.

Like I said, I have gone from disliking Scott Stevens to being a fan for life.

No real blockbusters at the deadline, Hawks picked up Sammy Pahlsson from the Ducks as a center in exchange for a 6th D-man, no real big improvement as I see it.

Yeah, it looks like the Kings have thrown in the towel for this season. I guess losing four in a row will do that to you. Trading Patrick O'Sullivan and a 2nd round pick for Justin Williams? WTF is up with the Wings (and "pesky" Saturday opponents)?!!! For a while I was thinking that it might be Detroit/San Jose playing for the West... until last Wed came along (w/Calgary getting a whole lot better). And now, down the stretch, I'm seeing the team playing unfocused in certain games, and their defense taking most nights off. Just please don't use the "hurt/injured player(s)" excuse... it's late in the season, and everybody's banged-up and trying to get healthy. While I always want to see good, competitive play through til the end, I just hope this isn't another early-out season (1st or 2nd round). And no, I'm not freakin' out.... just a bit concerned...

Hawks are in the exact same boat, John...playing like they have already clinched a playoff spot. The Flames seem to be falling into a complacent trend as well. Losing their last two games to teams they should have beaten, albeit on the road.

Iginla has been hot and cold this season. I'm hoping the new top line will start gelling in time for the post season run....

Assuming the top line starts rolling and they start playing with the grit and dertermination they have in years past, I see the Flames or San Jose coming out of the West.

You and I both. Sharks have been playing flat for the past 2-3 months now. I think they have played maybe 2 good games, the rest have sucked. Yeah, they got injuries, and some major ones, but come one. Injuries means you can loose, not play like crap. Look like a great sleeper from the East. They are 8-2 over their last ten games, including big wins over Calgary and the Rangers... not to mention, the total beatdown they put on Tampa Bay the other night. Erik Staal had 4 goals!

Eric Cole has been a real spark plug since the trade. Watch this team... they went from 9th in the East to 6th (closely contested part of the East standings right now). I feel real good about their chances. :tu

Yeah, Williams was great for a couple years - especially during the Cup run. It would be nice to think that he will get better and get back to his old self, but if the Kings track record (see Cloutier, Dan, et al) then the chances are slim.

Interestingly, the Kings have won all three games since booting O'Sullivan. Purcell has more than taken over for him. But the Kings just can't seem to figure out if they are good or not. They are so streaky - 4 road wins then 4 home losses, then 4 road losses then 3 home wins. If they do squeak in then they will get the privilege of playing either Detroit or San Jose. Good luck with that!

I think there are a couple teams in the west that are almost there, but not quite. The pacific division could get very interesting in the next couple of years if the Kings and Coyotes are able to add a few key players here and there in the off season.

I don't think the blues will make it, but I think I would take great satisfaction in that. They aren't TOO far behind, though I think they will come up about 4-6 points short.

Joe, I couldn't agree with you more. It's the hardest trophy to win in all of sports. Period. Anything can happen in the early rounds, and NOBODY can ever be totally counted out. I've loved the Wings, Bruins (lots of family there), and Canadiens (old school) since I was a little kid. Talk about a busy day in the NHL, so much for Sunday being the "Day of rest". :r

My Blues gained another two points, beating the 'Wild'.

Detroit did us (Blues fans) a favor in beating the Blue Jackets. :tu

Rangers 4-1 vs the Flyers
Islanders 4-2 vs the Hawks (My condolences, Tom) ;)
Penguins 6-4 vs the Bruins

I watched the Rangers/Flyers game for lunch and for super enjoyed the Blues/Wild game. A good day of Hockey. Now time for my second :ss.

Is he being a ghost on the ice? I swear during the playoffs for the sharks you couldn't tell when he was on the ice, and when you could, it was not a good thing. So happy they didn't sign him, and got Boyle for essentially nothing.

Kings beat the bruins! Give the kings another year or two, and I think they will be very competitive again. Could be a scary division.

Yeah, I would much rather have Boyle. Campbell isn't invisible at all......he can clearly be seen losing his check, coughing it up, shying away....it is sad. He actually had his best game in 3 weeks last night, and he was barely average.

I honestly can say tonights game was the first in a while Ive watched. I was talkin to a friend on facebook who is also a huge Devils fan and he told me that the refs have been calling alot of stuff against the Devils that should have not been called causing power plays (where we have been really sucking and allowing goals) and letting stuff go that should have been called on the team they were playing. Tonight Brent Sutter actually went out on the ice to yell at the ref and they game him a penalty for something like "abusing a ref"

St Louis didn't play with the urgency I expected being that they are fighting for their playoff lives...especially against a team that played last night in Montreal. Jackman and Oshie were not the dominating forces the way they were the last couple times the Blues beat the Hawks.

Avery is a black-eye for hockey. His play is not simply "aggressive" or "hustle." IMHO he is a goon and a weasel and an embarrasment for the sport.

A little love for my Hurricanes...

1) They beat Sid the Kid in overtime.
2) They are in the playoffs with this win - no matter what.
3) They are on a franchise-record winning streak!

Agreed...."Goons" per se don't bother me (though it is impossible for an old school goon to make the NHL anymore, they have to have skills in this day and age), but his bush-league BS is just a mockery of the sport.

Good point... and I don't have a problem with a team having a few big uglies who can get down, if necessary. That is certainly not Avery's role. Agitator? Please! What he does is disrespectful of the game in my eyes. :(

I am excited! Already had the playoff tickets paid for... and we are peaking right now. The addition of Eric Cole has been seamless and the 'Canes are playing with a lot of energy. The game tonight was incredible!

Gotta give it up for the Pittsburgh fans, tonight. They showed up in force (probably 25 % of the crowd) and cheered passionately. Enjoyed having them. Now Buffalo fans... that's a different story. ;)

I never really was a fan of Avery until he joined the Rangers. His antics get out of hand often times, but I feel as if the Otts, Ruutus and Tootoos are worse. Sean does stupid stuff to irritate, but I don't think I've seen him go headhunting and attempt to put someone out of the game like I've seen Ruutu & Ott do on multiple occaisions.

Missed the sharks/ducks game, but heard it was domination, any of you guys see it? Hopefully they can put up a fight tomorrow night, as I'm sure the game will get a lot more intense. Back to back games against the same team, and the same division, should be good.

Unbelievable goaltending by Steve Mason and Nic Khabibulin in today's Jackets/Hawks game....too many highlight saves to fit on one reel!

Rookie of the Year candidate Kris Versteeg beats Rookie of the Year candidate Mason with the game's only goal at 3:10 of Overtime. Hawks now have 3 more points than Vancouver and Calgary with 3 games to play....home ice for round 1 is looking good.

Rangers and Panthers are tied for the 8th spot with 89 points with 3 games to play. Rangers have the tie-breaker with 1 more win. Should be an awesome week of hockey.....Go Panthers!! (One of there goalies is a friend of mine).

Wings are my second favorite team, but I just don't see them coming out of the West this year.
