Anyone else as simultaneously excited and worried about this? The books are incredible, very dark, bloody as hell and I just can't seem to put them down. I just hope they will at least try to do the first book justice.

Man, I hope they get the show right. I picked up the first book in the series when I heard about the tv show. I blasted through all the books in the series, can't wait till the new book comes out.
I love that they finally have some videos available now. Looks good so far. My wife and I cancelled HBO last year but might have to pick it back up again in 2011.

anyway, my thoughts on the show are positive. I've never really disliked the quality of an HBO show, so I think it will be good.

The first book drags a little in the beginning, mostly because he seems to be setting everything up for the rest of the series. If you can get half way through the first book the last half is outstanding and will make you want to keep reading.
My wife is really enjoying not paying for HBO now (more shoes for her) so I know it's going to be tough to get her to sign up again. I'm going to have to pick my battles here. I've been debating whether to pick up the NHL package or wait and see if I can get her to subscribe to HBO again.

From the behind the scenes stuff on You Tube from HBO it looks like the series will be dead on. There are even interviews with George R.R. Martin talking about everything.
The lines are spot on from what you catch of them at times.

Like many of the Sci Fi series, I lost interest waiting for the next book to come out. This is one of several series that I started and no longer remember which books I have and haven't read. The books were good and I want to get back to the series at some point in future. Now where is that last WoT book?

Hopefully he will get this next book done, and it will be the end. I hate when they go on and on and keep adding books. Wheel of Time just got terrible so much so that it ruined the first four books(that were actually good)

There are two more planned after this next one coming out. This next one will only focus on the Northern characters, as Feast for Crows focused on the Southern characters, however it sounds like the characters across the sea will be in both. All I'm hoping for is that he doesn't take 5 years to release the next book like he did the previous two...
As far as the series, I'm really excited for it and only minimally worried (as much as anybody should be for a book to tv or movie transfer).
With each preview however I'm more and more satisfied that HBO will do this series right. I just finished the fourth book Friday and I'm VERY much so looking forward to see this.
Also can't wait for July 12th and the next book :tu

The Sword of Truth series is completed and finished. It is darn good and pretty epic. They attempted a series of that set of novels as well but it failed as it strayed WAY off course from the books and alienated the entire fan base.
I've never understood that with producers. You have an automatic fan base built right in to any series. Why stray and so far away from the source material where the characters have the same names and that's about it? I mean if the books are so good that it developed a fan base why not attempt to be faithful to the story and attract more fans while not losing the original fans?
This doesn't seem to be the case with Game of Thrones. George R.R. Martin appears to have been very involved with the series and in the small making of segments they've had exact lines lifted from the novels in some inconsequential scenes. It appears to be very faithful to the source material.

This is exactly what happened to Robert Jordan and Wheel of Time for the middle chunk of the series, unfortunately when he realized he was dying and started to get the series back on track a) a lot of fans had already moved on and b) he didn't live long enough to finish the series.
Luckily Brandon Sanderson is a great writer and seamlessly finished the book Jordan was halfway through and has done a great job finishing up the series so far. One more book and I'll finally finish this decade long love affair (completely with ups and downs), haha.
I agree that Martin seems to have stayed true to the original story and has done a GREAT job telling to story...I just wish he could've released more than 4 books in a 15 year period :( Doesn't give me much hope that he'll finish the 7 book series by 2020, lol

I am a big SoT fan. The show was entertaining from a TV aspect, from someone who read the series, the show was complete and utter drivel. I had to tell myself that this was purely for entertainment and in no way was trying to emulate the books, otherwise I would get angry.

Watched the premier last night and within the first 2 minutes I was so excited how closely they were sticking to the book and how well they translated those scenes into the show. I do agree though that there is some basic background that's covered in the book during the scenes that if I was watching it for the first time I would've been a little lost, but having read the series it was almost like going back and reading it again it was so well done.
So not to spoil any of it for people who haven't seen it or read the books, but so far I'm VERY impressed with the recreation of the scenes, every actor and actress matches their character in the book insanely well, and of course thank you HBO for making a great show with graphic nudity and violence. If they had taken that out it wouldn't have felt like the same story!

I like the show, so far. But I'm really confused by the time line. Stark and Baratheon left for what seemed like a long trip, but were back in no time to resolve the fight between the prince and Stark's daughter. Plus, didn't Stark's wife leave to deliver him a message about a possible assassination attempt? Where was she during the little trial scene?
And Stark's wife said that she was praying for 30 days for her son, yet it seemed like he was only out for a few days.....
I predict that the Queen is an evil plant of some sort and she was behind the assassination. She's creepy.
So, confused....... Didn't help that the last few minutes of the first episode were somehow cut out of my recording.
I need to read the books.

apparently hbo subcribers can go to that site after an episode on Sunday night and watch the next episode. For instance some people have already watched episode 7. and apparently there is a pretty steamy lesbian sex scene.

Golfing with my oldest son the other day and I mentioned the show, asking him if he had seen any of the episodes yet. I knew he had read the books, but I should have said "DON'T SPOIL ANYTHING".
Too late. He blurted out several things before I could stop him. Not that it really ruins the show for me, but you rarely get that truly anxious feeling while watching anything these days, it's all so predictable.
I may know more than I wanted, but I'm still going to enjoy this. So far it's been dang good TV, even if I have to watch it alone because my wife thinks it's ****ography disguised as Dungeons and Dragons.
Silly auto-modding on those 4 letters IMHO.

I carefully stayed away from this thread until I was caught up on the season. What an incredible series! Generally, this isn't a genre I gravitate toward, but since it was being done on HBO, I gave it a shot and am glad I did. Same thing goes for True Blood. HBO consistently has the best shows on television, IMHO.
And thanks to all who have read the books and have refrained from giving any spoilers. :tu

Renley is going south because he fears Cersei and Joffery.

Yea, so that was a crazy episode. I have watched it twice and I'm still fuzzy on a few things. :sh
-What is Tyrion up to? Who where the barbarian type people he allied with and why? Also, it was interesting how quick Tywin wanted these men to help in battle. That just builds to Tywins ferocious character. :2
-So there are 2 Lannister forces, Tywin's and Jamie's. But where are these forces on the map? Location will help me see all this.
-We were told about the Riverlands once before, but only from King Robert talking about 'making 8' or whatever. He did not claim the Riverlands as part of the Seven Kingdoms. So why would the people of the Riverlands ally with either the Lannisters or the Starks? It seemed that the Riverlands are of some importance in winning battles....
-Bannerman means what? Rob Stark said to round up the bannerman? Are these people that are allied with the Starks? Why?
Haha, and why the hell was Hordor running around naked? That was just weird.
P.S. I REALLY hope Serio whooped that beastly of a mans ass after Arya left! :banger

Okay, it seems I over thought the scene with Tyrion and the hill tribes. It was means to an end. Tyrion only bribed them. I forget the knowledge that Tyrion has. He is able to bribe this men based on what they want the most, the Vale of Arryn.
As far as I can tell the Starks' host moves South and have reached the neck. It seems that Jamie is in Riverrun and Tywin is on Riverroad near Lord Harroways' Town. At least that is what I picked up on the map displaying in the episode. The Starks elect to challange Jamie first and will need to cross the river at 'The Twins'. I found a map (http://shaghaghi.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/WesterosMap1.jpg) that might help people who have not read the book, like my self.
I think I was confusing Riverlands that the King mentioned before and the Riverlords. Is it that the Riverlords are in the Riverlands? Can someone explain this?
Yea, the bannerman from what I can find on the net are men who carry banners, flags, and etc. But I think in this context it reffers to allies to the Starks. Robb said that the bannerman swore an oath to the Stark Kingdom, but are NOT actual Starks or people of the Kingdom. Any more insight on this one?

-Tyrion is basically trying to take his fate into his own hands. The barbarians are the hill people that live outside the Vale of Arryn that attacked Catelyn's party when they were on their way to the Vale originally. Tyrion knew that if he couldn't bribe them (with real steel and not the crappy weapons they were using) that him and his one guy couldn't make it past them alive.
-I haven't seen this episode yet, but from what I remember from the books Jamie is camped outside of Riverrun? But I can't remember. Here is a map that sections out the "states" pretty well: Political Map of Westeros (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lRQXN76u8e8/TVMc5XW-m6I/AAAAAAAAAQQ/78EzQKXlAXc/s1600/Map_Westeros_Political.gif)
The Riverlands allied with the Starks because Catelyn Stark used to be Catelyn Tully, and House Tully rules the Riverlands. The reason they are important is just their geographical location (see the map above).
Bannerman in this sense is talking about all the lords that have sworn to House Stark. For instance, House Tully and House Frey are two of Robb Stark's bannermen.
Hodor was running around naked because...well he's not all there. He's just a simpleton that they never really describe as such well in the show, but describe him as such in the books. All he knows how to say is his name, Hodor, and can take orders but other than that isn't very bright.
Okay, it seems I over thought the scene with Tyrion and the hill tribes. It was means to an end. Tyrion only bribed them. I forget the knowledge that Tyrion has. He is able to bribe this men based on what they want the most, the Vale of Arryn.

Yes, the Riverlords are the rulers in the Riverlands. House Tully and House Frey are both Riverlords. What King Robert said about "making the 8" was in reference to sleeping with girls from each region of Westeros.

I believe they are both there, one outside Riverrun and the other at Harrenhal. I can't remember exactly however.
The opening to the show is kind of nice because it gives you a general idea of what Westeros looks like, but they only really highlight major places like King's Landing, Winterfell, and the Wall. In the books each one has a full map so you can quickly look up where the hell they're talking about, so without that yeah, it can be kind of confusing.

That's exactly right, when you think a main character emerges they are likely to get smacked down somehow. I loved Ned's character and I like Sean Bean playing him but it was bound to happen, sometimes evil has to triumph for there to be a story and keep in mind this is one LONG story.

I am a little disappointing that they did not show any of the battle. Seems like they might not have had the $$ to properly put on a battle scene.
As for a book six or seven, I sure as hell hope he can wrap it up with six. R.R. Martin is a pretty old fat dude, and I doubt he could last long enough for too many more books, it would really piss me off if he pulled a Robert Jordan. Tolken pulled it off in four books, what is wrong with these new guys? Don't get me wrong I love the story, but it should not take over 10k pages it tell it.

There are seven planned books right now, I doubt that he will take a book away, if anything he'll add more books, that's how these authors roll! He is old though, and I agree, he better not dilly dally and die before he finishes. I think now with the show he has a reason to htfu and finish it up.

Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean are the only reasons I watched this show. Their characters are/were great.....
I despise, almost violently...that stupid little bastard boy king. He has a face you could just punch endlessly. Also the queen "lena Headey" has the worst acting on the show and is very annoying as well. "King Joffery?" Sounds like a prime and proper king *wheres the sissy smiley*
Seems also kinda stupid that it looks like Drogo is dead for sure. See they went on saying how bad@$$ he is and before we could see him kill more than like 2 people he goes out like b!tch to a paper cut. :td
I think I'll finish up this season and call it quits. It looks like what could have been a great show is already over IMO.
I don't care what the reason is you don't kill off the main character and best actor on the show. That makes ZERO sense. Who are they going to market for the 2nd season? They have no one.
This one will only go 2-3 seasons. Mark my words.

There really aren't a lot of main characters in the books, all go to very unexpected places in the story, well the ones that survive anyway. The story changes, turns, and twists and I'm only in the last part of the second novel.

A vicious beating? Yes :tu
I'm not sure they know how TV works......you cannot off the guy on the front of the cover/advertisement in the 9th episode of the first season.
Would you watch Sopranos if Tony died in the first season? I doubt it.
Would The Wire be the best show ever if they killed McNulty off in the 9th episode? Nope, the 10th episode would be the end of the show.
Books or no books IMHO they just f*cked themselves. We'll see if I'm right, only time will tell.
What they did here was use Sean Bean, they used his name, his fame, to sell their show and now they are hoping people watch it without him. They will lose viewers for this.
They really have to realize half the people watching the show never read the books. So they don't care if it follows the books or not. Hell I didn't even know there was books for this show. That's how little it matters if you follow them.

Obviously if you haven't read the books you might think that killing off the main character is bad for the show, but you have to understand that killing Ned was an integral part of the series. The rest of the story can't happen with him alive. As much as it sucks, because Sean Bean is awesome, you've got to understand that he isn't the "main character" as there are 20 "main characters". The 20 characters are the only ones that have the story told from their perspective.
On the other side, if the TV series decided to deviate from the storyline and not kill Ned, the entire series would've been decried as "crap" by all the fans who read the books, and would've changed the rest of the series direction. They would've lost their core fanbase and that would've been far worse than losing a couple people who were upset that they killed off Ned.
Anyway, yeah, Joffery is a little douchebag, and some of the characters that are hated now (Jamie, also to a certain extent Tyrion just because he's a Lannister) become characters you actually care about and are sympathetic towards. It might seem like all the douchebags in this series are winning, but everybody gets theirs in one way or another.
So, long story short, it would be a shame if you quit watching the series at the end of this season...some of the best parts of the story are yet to come.

If that were to happen, there would be no point in even having a book or show. The books are about the struggle for power, without the families/houses/kingdoms there would be no story-line.
Are you looking for a show that is solely about the Dothraki?

Maybe I'm tainted because I read the books, but it seemed overly apparent to me that the protagonist house of the series that you're supposed to cheer for is the Starks. They're the good guys in the book, and I felt they were portrayed well in the series, with the Lannisters (minus Tyrion) being the "Evil" house. Having talked to my friends (who haven't read the books) about this series, they were rooting for the Starks and were very surprised and pissed at Ned's storyline, so I'm not sure why you didn't feel like there was a house you should cheer for :(
agctribefan

Sawyer
07-05-2011, 12:23 PM
I understand that they want you "cheer" for the Starks. It is hard though when they are naive and gullible. They also are not fit to lead, get pushed around and make foolish decisions. Granted I haven't read the books and I am only going off the show. But I would think they would have tried to make them more likeable if they wanted you to get emotionally attached to them.
yachties23
07-05-2011, 02:13 PM
I think as a reader of the series, Martin doesn't really pick a family for you to side with. Sure the Starks seem like the good guys, but this whole series isn't about good guys or bad guys. Its about a kingdom in peril and the chaos that a vacuum of power creates.
Brutus2600
07-05-2011, 02:26 PM
The thing that Martin did well with the books (in my opinion), was made you care about whatever main character you were reading about.
The Starks, while not cunning and loyal/honorable to a fault, have many main characters that you begin to care about and root for.
The Lannisters are cunning, manipulative individuals, but I found myself rooting for Tyrion, even when he was pitted against Catelyn. Believe it or not, as much of a ***** Jamie is (pompous, a real dick for pushing Bran out the window, and a creep for sleeping with his sister), in the later books you really start to care about him and root for him as well.
Daenerys wants to bring war to the Kingdom. I'm still rooting for her, even though she's out looking for revenge for the Targaryens even though the Targaryen that was overthrown was a terrible and insane king.
So yes, while many characters can't be labeled "good" or "evil" the fact remains that I hate Cersei, hated her from book 1 to book 4, loathe Joffery, and dislike Tywin...all being Lannisters just kind of puts me at odds with the Lannisters as a whole and I find myself rooting for anybody BUT them.
blugill
07-09-2011, 08:36 AM
I don't really care for the Frey's either Brutus, they are kind of a backwater storyline that just really didn't pique my interest at all.
I agree that there are many characters in the different families that you want to root for and others you don't. Cersei, like you I hate. Same as Joffery and Catelyn's insane sister and her equally insane boy from House Tully. And yes I find a soft spot in my reading heart for Daenerys as she was essentially sold into the position she was in by her conniving brother. It was a war that had nothing to do to her just her insane king relative.
This isn't really a story about X House, it's the story about his country in this period of time and what happened to each house.

There are tons of descriptions in these books. Every meal, every feast, every course. I can't tell you how many times I've read "Ceseri broke her fast on...."
But those descriptions carry over wonderfully to help paint the picture that is Westeros. You can picture the utter cold at the wall by the descriptions of the haunted forest, The utter brutality of size of Gregor Clegane by the way men describe him, and the hideousness of Brienne of Tarth just cause well men are just really messed up to her lol.

I watched the first season on HBOGo.com and got totally hooked. Next season starts in a few weeks I believe.
Jeezus, just finished all ten episodes and apart from what seemed like the falling apart of the barbarian storyline near
the end it was all pretty great. And even then there was this icon of things to come with the dragons that says
this is gonna get freaky deeky in 2012. To bad Sean Bean had to die, he's always good. But how else to spur
on the full measure of revenge that was coming even before they chopped his head off, haha, well, look out.
Such a harumph on page 8 or so about S. Bean getting offed, and I could see that, and I was pi55ed, too.
But of course, like I said above, this is what will drive the hate and revenge that will run the second season.
But it got me thinking, who do I like? Of course, the 'little lanister' is great, and I think it would make sense
if he ends up being a good guy who helps bring down his family. He DID not like it when they put him out front
in the supposed big battle. I thought it was hilarious when he got hammered by that big mallet during the charge.
And Man do I love Aya Stark, (sp). Her dad kept trying to shove that mommy role down her throat and she was not
having it. Now she is gonna slice comeone's co(& off to be sure. It also looks like she is going to become a woman
right onscreen, kind of like Hermione. Whoopsie. But someone's a55 is grass.
I also think the redhead Ros, the whore's a55 needs to be elected president of the riverlands or something, too.
My God what glutes. That white skin and perfect body just knocked me out. Put the dragon lady's face on her
body and you have something even better than the original, which was already spectacular.
Don't worry Bill, there will be plenty to dig when the show comes back. Of course, they will likely drag the revenge
out for 14 episodes. I hate that.

Other than that it is nice to see Tyrian be what he is apparently set to become in season 2. I guess its

So far she's slept with her brother and fathered 3 children by him and she's rolled in the hay with her nephew too.
Incest, incest is the best put your sibling to the test!

How about that poor kid getting stabbed in the neck!? Crazy sh|t right there.
This has been a long week with no one saying a word about last week. I have decided not to watch my recording until
next weekend is past and I have two on a DVD. It's been a long week with very little time for TV. I have a feeling its
going to be a badass Monday night.
