All-Star catcher Joe Mauer and Minnesota completed an eight-year, $184 million deal.
Even though I would love to have seen him as a Yankee, it is best for baseball as a whole that he stayed with the Twins instead of going to the Yankees or Red Sox.

Free agency does not suck for the players though. Free agency is definately needed, the problem is the players union has gotten too powerful. Hopefully more players will follow Joe's lead and take less money to allow a team to build around him.

Indeed. They had to pay Strasbourg fifteen million I think, and they are going to need some cash to resign Dunn and Willingham after the year if they want to have any offense go forward. Don't know if they have the money, but he could be hard to pass up. Best hitting catcher prospect since Mauer. I doubt the Pirates would sign him either, Baltimore at number three already has a pretty good young catcher, maybe KC or the Indians if they are willing to pony up some cash.

Cleveland has a cathing prospect in Triple A and will be called up very soon...Carlos Santana. I agree, Pirates will not drop the kind of money he will be asking. And with Weiters, Baltimore won't take him. KC might be his destination. I would love to see him go to the Nats and catch Strasbourg. I don't believe they will re-sign Dunn...he glove is garbage...but damn his bat is sexy!! Would LOVE for my Mets to grab him...but he wil not be around that late.

I'd like to see the Nats grab him too, they have been the worst team in baseball too long, they should get the top picks. Dunn is better at first then he was in left, he won't win a gold glove, but like you said, his bat is scary. He fits in nice there hitting behind Zimmerman.

Jim Joyce admitted after the game that he blew the call after seeing the replay. Even if it was a bang bang play for the 27th out to end a perfect game the call HAS to go to the defense.

Joyce sure didn't appreciate the earfull he was getting from Miguel Cabrera between pitches after the fact. I go back forth about replay in baseball (other than HR's) and this play kind of pushed me over to the replay side of the fence. Even on a close call, which that wasn't, you'd think the umpire would error on the side of the pitcher given the fact he had already went 26 outs.
BTW - the play by Austin Jackson in center was freaking OUTSTANDING, but now will be overlooked since it wasn't a perfect game.

The MLB crew has the right idea for replay to work in baseball. It will require a 5th umpire with the immediate replays who can send a change of call down to the crew chief. No sending umpires off the field to look at the replay. It will allow for replay without the delay.

I'm all for replay in MLB as long as it doesn't delay the game too much. And definetly not for use of balls & strikes.

Totally agree.
The umpire was a jackass merely for the fact that even if it was a close call to him, anyone in their right mind would have given the benefit of the doubt to a pitcher for which that was the last out for a perfect game.
Truly a shame.

I am no fan of the "replay" option in baseball, for a number of reasons. But I do find it interesting that the same group of people who most vehemently oppose the replay also so loudly object to the length of baseball games . . . namely, the umpire corps.
Hey, if they don't like getting a 6-figure income for hanging out at the ballpark for a few hours a day, they should try working 8 hours a day for minimum wage in a REAL job instead.

I think that Gallaraga will be thanking Joyce down the road. Gallaraga will forever be known as the one who was robbed of the perfect game. If he had pitched a perfect game, he probably wouldn't be as famous/infamous. Anybody remember Dallas Braden? He pitched a perfect game last month, but most have already forgotten about him.

The major problem with the fans making all the selections is that people that deserve to be there often times get left off the roster unless they are from a big market team like the Yankees or Red Sox. I think the All Star team should be made up the guys that have the best numbers at this point in the season. I don't have a problem with each team being represented either.

OK, but your Giants play in a city with a greater population than Boston, and Fresno itself ain't much smaller than Beantown. Is it the Red Sox fan's fault that you laid-back Cali surfer dudes don't support your own as strongly?
As for the Yankees, let's forget for a moment that New York City dwarfs Frisco and Boston combined and instead take note that, at the moment, there are three definite Hall Of Fame players on the team, two who are at least borderline, and three or four more who have demonstrated the potential to become HOFers. I had to laugh out loud at your comment above. I don't do much surfing here in Fresno, three hours from the beach in 100 degree weather.
I don't think the population of indivual cities where teams are located really factors into the equation a whole lot. Instead, it's a teams history and current or recent production. We both know how many bandwagoners there are out there. In fact, my two buddies that follow baseball most are both Yankee fans.
As far as the other bolded comment above - If the Yankees had 9 guys that deserved to be in the All Star game because of their stats THIS YEAR (not because they have done it in the past or are potential HoF'ers) I could live with that. Even though I root against the "Evil Empire." :tu

I agree that there are flaws in every system, in every game, and every year there are guys left off the "Team" that deserve to be there. By no means, with the players voting all selections in, would it solve the problem. I just feel it's the lesser of all evils. I just can't stand how most managers pick THEIR guys or Omar Infante. Is it just me or does the Home Run Derby get more boring every year? I use to love them and the last few years just haven't done it for me. Is it just that I'm getting older so it's losing some of its lust?

Agreed... my wife asked me if I was even watching it because I was on the computer at the same time. I really wasn't paying too much attention to it, but know what the alternatives would have been :r

I thought it was exciting this year. Not as good as Hamilton getting robbed in '08, but entertaining enough. This was my middle child (8yrs old)'s first HR derby , and he was excited about it. He was pulling for Corey Hart, but it was not to be.

The last week or so? Ya think? Remember, last year the Tiggers and the Twinkies couldn't even cut the pie in 162 games . . . it took them 163 1/3 instead. You'll be lucky if it's over with a week to go. :r

mlb.com has nothing better to do than to put a A-Rod 600 watch at the top of their site. Every at bat that A-Rod takes is broadcast live at the top of mlb.com's homepage. Ridiculous! Where were they when Griffey was shooting for 600 two years ago?
