Agreed. Raspberry Coffee Stout seems.....different to me.
Upon further review.... it is.
The coffee stout is one of my all time favorites from them... fresh draft anyway.
I always thought the bottled coffee stout was a bit different for some reason.
This is ok (little o, little k).. the coffee is very pronounced as an aroma, but almost washed out by the raspberry tartness as far as flavor is concerned. That said, it is very hard to distinguish the raspberry as a complete flavor also. Its one of those deals where the two just don't fully cooperate. The coffee and stout aspects are washed out by the tartness. The beer tastes thinner and the tartness of the raspberry appears to detract from the body of the stout. To me it seems like it makes my mouth water a bit due to the tartness, but there isn't a pronounced raspberry.
On a scale of 1-10, I give it a "why?".:sh
I've never been a fruit beer kinda guy. Stout, yes, fruit, no.
Screw it... on to the English IPA!:tu:tu

Wow! I had one last night and really liked it, but don't know if I can justify the cost.
I don't know if Founder's stuff is new to Minnesota or just the liquor store I go to (I don't remember ever seeing it before). They had rows of KBS along with the other Founder's brews, and it's been there for at least a week.

As much as I love craft beer, particularly the stuff that DFH, Bell's, Avery and Founders are putting out these days, I really have to draw the line at dropping $24 on a 4pack of beer. I've never had KBS, and based on its A+ BA score I'm sure it's good stuff. But that's a lot of dough to put down for a beer.
I guess I have the luxury of crafting my own stuff, so maybe I'm a little biased, but my concern is that all this uber-premium brewing is just going to jack the price of other craft beers across the board. Just a few years ago, you could get DFH 60, Bell's Three Hearted and Sierra Nevada Torpedo in my area for $6 or so. Now they're all at $9/6pk, and many brewers are beginning to package their stuff in the 4pk format. Jefferson's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout & Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stouts are other good examples. Where does it stop? Ingredient-wise, there isn't that much more going into a breakfast stout than in a standard variety stout--I appreciate the additional aging some of these beers are getting, but I'm not sure it's worth a $2-3/bottle premium.

I'll agree that a "regular" IPA, stout, porter, etc is pushing my limits above $10.00 a six pack.
But when you start getting into imperial brews you're talking about, in a lot of cases, doubling the ingredients at least, not counting aging time and space for barrel aged beers etc. Everything costs.

The bars are taking this trend to the same degree. It is crazy trying to go get drink these days in Burlington. Want a couple of Hill Farmsteads? It's gonna be $19 after tip, and you are going to get 12oz pours not a pint. It seems like the trend is not only more expensive, but smaller pours as well. The bad thing is it has me thinking "well whats $5 a beer" when I go to buy a $20 4-pack because I'd have to spend that much on budwieser if I was to go out. I don't like the trend, but with craft beer getting more popular I don't see it turning around.

You all do realize the higher the alcohol the more malt is needed (for the beers we are talking about)? The hoppier the beer, the more hops used. The cost adds up. Then consider the cost of packaging, shipping, rising cost of everything these days, distribution, etc. It sucks but what can you do. I don't like it either, but I see where they are coming from.
Bourbon barrel beers are so expensive because bourbon barrels are so damn expensive these days. EVERYONE wants them - tons of breweries and other distilleries use them (American/Canadian/Scotch/Irish Whiskey all uses them, not solely of course). It use to be they couldn't get rid of them or you could buy them for like $15. Now they are over $100 per barrel, of course I'm sure breweries make deals to where it ends up being cheaper in bulk, but still, that ends up being a huge cost. If you're putting a big beer in it, you can only use that barrel once. You can use it again for a lighter style, then it's pretty much done.

I definitely see this part of it, but I remember not too many years ago drinking imperial IPA's from the local brewpubs for $5-6 a pint, now it's $7-8/12oz.
The other thing you are getting at with the big beers is opportunity cost because of the length of the fermentation. If they are using a tank they could run more batches of a pale that sells well in the same amount of time it takes to put out the one big beer.
I get the cost of things, and I like supporting smaller local businesses even if it costs me more to do so, but I think the trendiness of beer drinking is afoot as well and I am not as big a fan of that.

Yes, I agree on all points, especially the last. I do appreciate the costs involved with brewing bigger beers, I'm just reluctant to pay the premium when I work the economics out to a 5 gallon batch.
That being said, I did luck in to a pub on Saturday that was serving Founders KBS draft at basically $1/oz. I figured, ah what the hell, so I bought one. :tu

Yea, but us homebrewers don't have the cost of running a brewery, taxes, packaging, shipping, distribution, etc, etc. While I love trying new beer, I can't afford to buy commercial beer much, which is just another factor in my homebrewing. I can make amazing beer, very cheap. Sorry if I come across in any bad way, I don't mean to, there's just a lot of things people don't consider in the cost. Inflation alone is a big factor. I've heard (just a rumor, so who knows) that Barley prices may go up for a few different reasons. Farmers can make more from other crops apparently, so they are switching. Again, that is heresay, I haven't looked into it. I sure hope not though..

$20 for a 4 pack of KBS vs. $10 a 22oz of numerous beers is not a bad deal. If KBS was a $10 bomber you would probably hear "Great price on such a great beer" even though it is more per ounce.

I agree 100%, you didn't come across bad at all. I think my own "nano-brewery economics" ;) factors in to my purchase decisions probably more than it should. I certainly appreciate that DFH, Avery's & Goose Island have a lot more carrying costs than I do, and that comes out in the bottle prices. They're not necessarily unreasonable, it's just more than what it would cost ME to make what I consider to be equal quality product. I'll drop the cash from time to time, just to give my tastebuds a work out, but at $20/4pk, I really have to think long before pulling the trigger.
I think we're pretty much saying the same thing, so it's all good :tu

A couple randoms that we've never had before (Rush River Nevermore, Tyranea Black Hawk Porter, a Southern Tier coffee stout, and a couple others), and the wife found a place that had some Founders KBS in. Unfortunately, they were limited to 2 bottles each (yes, 2 bottles, not even a full 4 pack). So we have a couple to try and then lament on how we can get more, and anxiously wait until it comes back out again. LOL

Not a haul, but close. The Tampa Bay Rays have set up micro brew stands in the Trop. Openning night I had two Cigar City Jai Lai( I was driving). The second night I had a Cigar City Maduro, 2 Colorado Vanilla Porter( never heard of it, but it was great), then had a Jai Lai, and finished the night with a Purple Haze.
That Vanilla Porter would have been soooooo good with a Cigar!!!! I am alraedy on the search for it.

Grassy-a$$, Al-b...Now one more question before I totally threadjack. I see here and there, "put some away for
a few years, you'll be glad you did." At the risk of starting a fight over 'aging' I come from the bourbon community,
where once it's in glass, time stops. Besides the analogy to Cuban Cigars, i.e., the price will never be going DOWN,
so when you see the good stuff, grab it, what could one logically expect a beer like that to do over time?
Or maybe, which beers seem to benefit from time in the cool and dark.
On a scale of 1-10, I give it a "why?".:sh

I've personally never been able to age beers, even in cases. I just drink them all. :sh
Cigars are easier for me to set aside.....easier to horde tons in coolers then to have a ton of beers lying around. I just don't have the space for it.
In general though Imperial stouts are ones to age. IPA's in general you wouldn't want to age.

Yes, as per my retardedly high ABV bourbons I like beers that are very brutal and 9%-21% ABV. Thus the Double Bastard/Arrogant Bastard, even the Stone Ruination. I guess I would call them "aggressive beers". Anything from Stone's usually is a great example. The Russian Imperial Stout is another good one.

Others here will have far more sound advice but here is my try at advice:
Start here
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/store.php
This is merely a starter article but it helped me. I started a year or so ago aging beers and its been more of an experiment than anything. Some I have held onto longer tasted better within months but lost something within a year, others sucked totally after aging and some have been better every time I try them. IPAs and other hoppy beers lose hoppiness as they age but very complex beers can benefit from time as flavors meld, as cigars. And just as stronger Cubans tend to fair longer in aging, stronger beers do as well. Some beers I've had that had a strong 'alcohol' taste became less harsh as they aged while some beers that were tasty to begin with became boring as they aged.

The best beers to age are high ABV, bottle conditioned ales. This includes the Imperial stouts Bill mentioned, but also barleywines, double IPAs, Christmas ales, and many Belgians. The reason is that the yeast in these bad boys will continue to work on the beer, causing changes over time.
If you have the patience, it can pay off. Most of the beers I age are homebrews, some go back to the mid-90s. I shared a 1996 (I think) "mystery stout" at a herf a few months ago, and it was like a smooth sherry.

Well in the other thread I told the tale of the Thelonius Bit(hes Brew that I had seen, of course it was only a mental
picture and it was the regular Brother Thelonius belgian ale, but of course, I rushed back to the store today.
We had a Wicked bout of severe weather here last night, and work had no power. As I move electrons around
to make funny pictures for a living, no need for me to stick around. And for some reason Buster's opens
really early, lol. So I march in there to collect my bit(hes brew. Which isn't. So instead of doing what I SHOULD,
Marching right back out, what do we ALL do? That's right, we make yesterday look like a coin in the fountain.
More or less, anyway, I mean I did not break the bank. Alcohol marketers love me, cause I never saw
a gift set I didn't want to buy, and I 'needed a glass', then I figured people seem to like the hoppy hoppenstein
or whatever, and I thought I'd try another rack on color alone and went for that russian stuff.

These are little 5 oz mini-pilsner glasses that we can pour a sip into and everyone can have their
own glass. Not sure if what you were trying to say was that everyone drank out of the same shack herf
glass....hehe...of course everyone had their own anyway, if I recall. I have put a logo on them, NOT
this one, though. This is an example.
After puffpuffpass-ing so many cigars, I don't guess drinkdrinkpass is so strange.

Wow, would love to get my hands on some of this. I thought DD was a seasonal, didn't think Founders had released a new batch yet?

That's funny you like #1 Albie, I heard from somebody the other day that they were not sure about that one,
lines coming out of the indian's head like that and all. He said, "tho I bet some will like it." I agreed that it was
disconcerting, but there was something about it I liked. #4 I was just looking at and thinking I should have

IMO, if you don't like it, there's something wrong with you :D although YMMV, I'll be honest!
I am not a regular Abita Beer drinker, but as a kid i drank a 5hit ton of the Abita Springs water, in those days you
could drive up to the town square, pop the trunk and fill gallon jugs from the spring that was piped with a gooseneck.
I like a few of their beers, not a fan of the gimmicky stuff like purples and stuff, but I think I used to like turbodog.

The first 2 editions of the collab are Bohr & (D)irac. Bohr draws it’s name from Neils Bohr, nobel prize physicist. (D)irac is named for Paul Dirac, another physicist and inventor of the “Dirac Equation.” They are sweet imperial stouts brewed with raisins, each will a slightly different flavor profile. This 3rd edition “Nielsbohrium” is a blend of both beers, aged in rum barrels.
