Well my Spyderco PM2 fell through, after 8 days of waiting for the knife to arrive I e-mailed the vendor from Amazon to find out their stock had run out. That is terrible service that I had to ask why it had not arrived. Ordered on the 22nd, still awaiting my refund.

This is why I don't order from anyone on amazon unless its amazon or filled by amazon.

I will definitley be cautious in the future, it was the only one available at the time though. Oh well, there are a couple others I have my eyes on...

Like the Southard. :dr

A teeny tiny Victorinox Rally Swiss Army Knife...the one with that just over an inch blade and a bottle opener that has faithfully accompany me since college.

But now I have my eyes on one of those Swiss Army Cigar Kinfe...anybody using them? If yes, how are they? Does the three punches work?

Gonna be a lot of new ZTs coming out this year, might want to wait for them. Or wait for the prices to drop on the old models. :2
personally I am not a fan of flippers, I will prolly never buy another one. I can't see your picture but I love stonewashed blades.

This one is only $120 new from kershaw guy. or i may pick up a Blem of the black version from him for $95.

I want a 0566 but it'll be almost 2014 before they're available enough for someone to get them at good prices. Always works like that with ZT. Happened with the 0560 last year.

Blak Smyth
02-18-2013, 07:26 AM
I really hate the 0770, I love my 0550 Gen2 though so I feel like I need no other ZT for now.
I don't see myself buying many more production knives. I am gonna focus on customs but not going to be buying many.
My Michael Morris Friction is on order and paid for so I am looking forward to that getting finished.

I do really want a Strider though... and the XM18 non flipper... I am a big fan of the Warren Thomas customs too but would I ever use it? Prolly not, they are too beautiful.

The new 0566 is going to be like a cross between the 0560 and 0550 but smaller, and be assisted like the 0350.

How to u like that lil boker?

I really like it, I am glad I didn't buy the real Curtiss since the Boker is so well made. It is super solid, but even smaller than I thought. I can make it completely dissapear in my hand when closed. The only two knives I would recomend to somebody for under $50 is the Skyline and the Boker Nano. :tu

I do not like assisted knives, I carry a knife as a tool not as a weapon so for me speed isn't an issue as much as durability.
Simple is better for my tastes, I love frame locks more than anything. Ti frame locks make me drool. I wish the Brous SSF I have wasn't a flipper and I wish it was a frame lock.

As nice as those are, I am not in love with the the design. To me the Sebbies are extremely boring, now that may be another story if I ever held one. Personally, without handling either, I would rather have a Strider.

Personally I would rather have a Strider.

I've held both the Strider SMF and the Sebenza, both are great knives, but I'd buy the Sebenza first. I really like the way the sebenza feels and it would more than serve my needs. I saw a nice selection of Dalton's as well, but I couldn't bring myself to look at them too seriously, the one I have has sat in the safe since I read about his retirement.

Which Dalton do you have? Picture?
I promise myself to use my knives without fear no matter how much I spend on them.
I learned that from cigars, you will enjoy it much more smoking it than storing it.
The nice thing about a knife is isn't one use like a cigar.

I also do not collect to resale, I buy to enjoy. I don't think I could part with any of my nice knives.
Of course I try to buy knives in different sizes, brands and styles.
Some people have 12 Spydercos that are all very similar, I can't relate to that. Haha
The closest I have is two Brous blades but they are both different blade shapes and one is fixed and the other is a folder.
D2 tool steel is one of the best steels so I was able to justify these two blades of the same brand.

Does the Sebbie feel "that" amazing when you open it? I would like to try one out someday.

I buy knives with full intent to carry and use them, but something about knowing that the Dalton will never be made again makes me not want to carry it. Honestly I'll probably try to sell it somewhere down the road to fund the Sebbie purchase. And yes, it really does feel that amazing, the tolerances are so tight and lockup is very secure. When I buy one, it will probably be the last knife I purchase.

Any of the knife gurus have any idea what the Dalton pictured above (or a page or two back depending on your settings) may be currently?

The SOCOM I believe is an elite-a from 2002, not sure what they're going for either, any help with a value is appreciated.

It's like having a cigar you never smoke. Unless you plan to sell it, just use it with pride!
I am back to carrying my 0550 G2, love this knife. I really have no interest in any other ZTs, for me this is a perfect knife. Just need to find a nice scale for it, can't find any I like enough to spend $50-$100 on.

Got an unexpected bonus at work, and the wife said I should buy that knife I've been wanting :tu Now to figure out what to get...really torn between the classic small sebenza, or the small with snake wood inlay. I think I'm going to wait to get the star-tac, the Sebbie has been a grail knife for me for about 10 years. I think I'm finally settled on the small with the insingo blade. I really like the wood inlay but I'm not convinced they'll hold up to daily carry as well and worth the extra cost.

That is one cool looking knife. After seeing your post I looked into CR knives a little. Didn't realize your knife is titanium, very cool, they have a great looking line up.

Depends on your definition of "cheap".

What is your price range?

Under $50.

Blak Smyth
03-25-2013, 08:28 AM
Under $50.

The only thing I can think of is a chinese Kershaw in that price range. I personally stay away from assited opening knives and flippers in most cases, personal prefference however with a cheap assisted you have a high risk of the assist failing eventually. And it also limits your options :2

The real questions is what do you intend to do with the knife.
Open mail, open boxes, widdle, self defense, prybar, etc...?
Do you need it to be light weight, small, large, etc...?

If you are going to go chinese, you might as well go Spyderco. But prolly not much there in the way of assisted.
Spyderco makes the best chinese blades, not good steel obviously but fit and finish is good.

The kershaw skyline is an excellent american steel, light weight and slim that fits into a pocket. Not assisted though. One of the all time classic EDC knives that fits your budget. Not a tactical design though, better for letter opening as the blade is slim and it only has a single liner.

I have a partial-serrated assisted chinese kershaw. I did some not great filing of the scales to make it more comfortable in the hand. If you want it, it's yours and $50 under budget.

A good, cheap assisted blade would be the Kershaw Cryo which sells for around $30. It's big brother the Cryo 2 should be coming out soon for about 40.

You can also look at the Kershaw Leek, assisted and made in the USA for around 40 or the Blur also US made for around 50. :tu

People do love those Cryos, excellent recommendation! :tu
It is an affordable version of a great design.
If you are set on assisted and are okay with chinese steel this is a sure winner!

For about $15.00 over budget you could get a Kershaw knockout, USA knife!

He said "Send it to me, I can fix it". I shipped it out and it came back perfect and solid at no charge. He also included a few stickers and a cool sheep skinned lined pouch.
You can judge customer service on how they respond to a problem, and gotta say Jason is awesome!!!

Also, has anyone heard of/checked out "Red Bearded Blades" on facebook? He buys the blades, has them stamped, and wraps them in paracord. They are one piece blades though, not folding knives. My foody BIL gave me a Dexter Russell probably 25 years ago. Doesn't give you the precision angled sharpening of a system but with appropriate pressure for a given steel plus a strop it does everything I want. Standing it vertically on the ends makes it possible to very closely replicate your angles from one side to the other of the rods.

Blak Smyth
04-22-2013, 07:23 AM
After a couple sharpenings on the kit, I have come to realize you must do a regrind on each knife once. It's the only way to make the angles match the machine.

Well funds are low currently but that doesn't stop me from designing it. I will have it made from a reliable and quality maker. It will be a titanium frame lock non-flipper. It will likely be redrawn several times, I keep moving the pivot location and that changes the entire knife design.

I know of 2 that will take a unique idea and make them a reality; Alan Davis and Elliot Williamson (Ferrum Forge).

I have a piece from Alan but I have yet to get anything from Elliot although he has a high reputation and works with some of the best materials available.

Ferrum Forge has a website and a youtube channel so you can look into Elliot but Alan is only available through Blade Forums (that I know of).

Blade was a blast!!!

My fixed blades took a while to get here (I shipped them) but my folder is still probably a few more days out.

Here's a quick pick of the 2 I received:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v45/issues1975/DSCN2083-1_zps26aa8a60.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/issues1975/media/DSCN2083-1_zps26aa8a60.jpg.html)

Now the big one can't really be considered a pocket knife but the little necker will fit in your pocket just fine. The large blade was made by Mike Gavic AKA Gavko on Youtube and the little was made by Geoff Blauvelt better known as tuffthumbz (another Youtube personality). The folder is a lefty Norseman made by John and Eric Grimsmo of Grimsmo knives. I will post pictures of it as soon as I get it!

Been toting and using a knife of some kind since Cub Scouts, forty five years or so back. Not to get windy but to me the Spydercos were a watershed moment, so many other companies started and got big in the pocket clip/easy open era.

My other folders have lately taken a back seat to the Zero Tolerance brand, got a pair of them now. Things seem hell for stout. (Oops sorry about the olde tyme slang, that means I think the ZT's are made well.)

I carried pocket knives around throughout my childhood but for some reason stopped around high school/college. Decided I needed a compact edc to start carrying again and ran across the Boker Plus Subcom F - so far I love it! It's hefty for it's small size, but overall I barely notice it in my pocket.

Yes I waited about 5 moths or so. It is slim in the pocket. Doesn't have any clip though. It is not a large knife by any means, and I wouldn't abuse it since they do not have any steel liners. They are constructed of pins and micarta only. If you want something stronger I would go with one of his fixed blades, they are beautiful as well. :tu

I have this little guy. EXTREMELY sharp, cuts very clean, and sharpens quite easily.

Awesome pick up Mac. Love all of Michael's work, especially the friction folder. I have been looking at his EDC knife & the folder. :tu
