Check out BladeHQ and look at the spyderco knives on there, easier to navigate
http://www.bladehq.com/cat--Spyderco-Manual--155
Good call. Thank you.
They use to send me catalogs all the time, dvds, of the annoying company owner doing a bunch of "tests" with his knives. None of them were very valid IMHO.

Also most of their knives use Aus-8 which is NOT a premium steel. Pretty much the very basic or intro steel, just like 440C.
I don't care if they found Unicorn horns and it somehow was the toughest object on earth that never went dull, I still wouldn't want anything from them. I used to watch their YouTube channel for hours lol

Found this on WalMart. Not sure on the blade length though. (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spyderco-Pacific-Salt-H-1-Black-Blade-Plainedge-Knife-Black/17403649#)

That has a blade length of almost 4 inches. It's basically a spyderco Endura but with H-1 steel instead of VG-10. It's rust-proof steel, it does not rust period. The only problem is that it does not have as good edge retention.

Aha, I did not know it didn't hold an edge. I need a blade that is rust resistant, I'll probably always be living around the ocean, for the foreseeable future anyways. I need to do some research now because I didn't ever hear that about the Spyderco. Damn it.

It holds an edge it's just not going to be the best. However it is supposed to be very easy to sharpen too so it's kind of a balance

They do, H1. I'm going to PM you some reviews for u to look at from bladeforums. H1 is also supposed to be a "work hardened" steel. From what I understand that means the more it gets put to use the harder it becomes :tu

BHalbrooks
06-23-2012, 07:22 PM
I read through a couple of those threads, and they seem to all say the same: "The edge retention gets better, and it sharpens like a dream." Hm... A couple of the guys are from MA as well, so that is a bonus.

You planning on getting it wet often? Do you work on the water?

BHalbrooks
06-23-2012, 07:30 PM
My Wife and I are going to get into Camping, and Fishing. Just seems like a really smart investment.

We live about 10 miles from the Ocean. I can taste the salt in the air usually.

emopunker2004
06-23-2012, 07:44 PM
There are plenty of great steels out there that are very rust resistant. S30V is a good one that Spyderco uses alot. VG-10 also. Zero Tolerance uses S30V in many of their knives also. If you don't plan on submerging it in water for a while then H1 might be overkill, I mean if you want it go for it. You can literally put h1 in a bucket of salt water for hours.

Hell, I live in FL where it's humid as all get out and even my 8cr13mov Spyderco Tenacious doesn't rust if I wipe it down every now and then.

BHalbrooks
06-23-2012, 07:49 PM
See, I wasn't sure if it was over kill or not. If I was a lobster fisherman, I'd get it.
You make valid points Sir. I'll look at S30V, VG-10.

Edit: Oh baby. (http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=718)

emopunker2004
06-23-2012, 07:58 PM
That Spyderco I posted above is S30V. The ZT 0350 is a good blade and is S30V. Both can be had for under $120. The Black handle silver blade para2 can be had for right at $100. Kershaw makes a Blur is S30V for under $100.

Knives with S30V will be US made, VG-10 will be made in Japan(still great quality)

Once I get some Cigars in the humi, I will put some cash aside for a new edc. I have a SOG Trident that I sometimes carry... But living right outside of Boston, I tend to avoid carrying anything.

I carried a benchmade mini-griptillian every day for years in Cambridge without any problems... but I didn't venture into Boston *that* often either, and Boston police were definitely a different breed...

Hey that Tenacious is 8cr13mov. It's not as corrosian resistant but if you slap som oil on it every week or so it should be good to go. I have one in the silver blade.

here's the description from the maker

This is a Black and and a Toxic Green EDC knife. Both knives are made of 1084 steel that is then parkerized black then put in a vibratory tumbler to give them a distressed look.
THe parkerizing will inhibit rust and looks great IMO.
These knives come with ability to clip them to your belt or remove clip and it can be a neck knife.
A knife of your choosing below will be delivered to your house for $75.00.
I started a new tradition with a previous buyer and I am going to keep running with it.
If any of my knives ever make it to the second page and they are not sold you will receive a $10 second page discount if you purchase on the second page or later. Thanks for looking.
CW
PS Forgot to mention blade is 3.25" long and knife is 7" long total.
Thanks for looking.

I really like the Lionsteel SR-1 especially the beautifully scalloped Ti frame lock side and steel lock bar insert. But alas, they are a little out of my price range and do not have the option for left-handed carry.

If I spend over 200 for a knife I would probably go custom. Although I could see myself dropping a few more dollars on a ZT0551 or 561 although I may not have to once the Cryo comes out. :tu

True but again, no left-handed carry option. It sucks being left handed and a folding knife lover. I have 2 knives that aren't left-handed carry and I don't carry either one anymore even though I love both of them.

Definitely a good deal. You can normally find a Tremor for around 20.

Just so you know, this is a pretty big knife. I have friends who own it and don't carry it as much for fear of scaring paranoid non-knife people. ;)

Going to ask a stupid question...

What is "your" purpose of carrying a knife?

I live in South Florida, Beach Capital! Other than keeping a knife in a drawer at the office or in the car for the occasional use of opening boxes and stuff, I'm not sure what I would use them for. I have about 20 SmithNWesson knives... all different types. But I rarely look at them... let alone actually use them.

Maybe there are applications I could put these babies to use that I am not realizing...

There's a myriad of uses for them. Everything from cleaning fingernails to cutting food to eat at work. Google "uses for a pocket knife". I carry a Swiss Army Knife or a Leatherman, so I have scissors, a knife, screwdriver, etc. wih me. Very handy to have.

There was a time when every man carried one. Both of my grandfathers caried one, my dad and FIL both carry one.

The question shouldn't be "why should I carry one?" it should be "why sholdn't I carry one?"

Here ya go. Spyderco Salt Series with H1 Steel. This is a RUST PROOF steel, not resistance, proof. It is work hardened so while it will not hold it's edge as long as other steels, over time it will get better. It's easier to sharpen due to it being a softer steel. But if you want a good beach/water/dive knife get one of these.

I carry two.... A Swiss Army knife, and a folder on a clip in my back pocket. I use one or both at least every other day or so. I've carried a pocket knife since I was in the 5th grade, never as a weapon, always as a tool. The principle at my Jr. High School has a nice collection of Barlows he would relieve from me about once a semester. Never any trouble, never any repercussions. Just ask me if I was carrying, and I'd give it up. Next day, I'd turn in coke bottles for enough money to buy a new one. Store was right next door to the school, and there wasn't restrictions or anything. I walked to school, so I always had a stash of returnable soda bottles hidden away for several dollars (and Barlows were $1.00 in the 1960's!).

They have ALWAYS been a tool, with many uses, which is why I have carried a Swiss Army knife for the last three decades. The folder in the back pocket is for ease of access, when my hands are full, and I can't reach into my pockets, or when I need a bigger blade than the one on the swiss army knife. I lead an active outdoor life, have a house and 6 acres, tractor, ATVs, 4x4's, and all sorts of outdoor work involved. Thus, I always have a need for a blade. If I lived in a big city, did very little outdoor or physical labor, I'd probably have no need whatsoever for a knife. Except maybe for self defense.

Yeah it is from a guy on BF and totally custom so it doesn't have a name. I am very excited so the wait is going to be tough but I'm sure it will be worth it. :tu

where does one order a knife like this if interested?

I did it by researching different knife makers on bladeforums.com and unsusualsuspects.net to find someone's style that I really liked then either found their website if they had one or emailed/pm'd them through the message board. I picked Alan Davis because had the style, price and flexibility I was looking for. There were several others I tried and they were either out of my price range or inflexible with style, materials or changing their templates to a left-handed lock. This probably won't be the last knife I commission from him.

There is another knife maker that I really want a knife from but his work is a bit more expensive. Jake Hoback makes overbuilt knives and his style is something I really like with super-thick Titanium handles and beefy blade stock. I hope to own one of his knives in the future.

There are quite a few knifemakers on bladeforums that do great work. USUALLY a folder will cost more $ than a fixed blade knife made by the makers over there. Some of them make them and sell them and also take custom orders. You should check it out.

Not a bad little knife but I would recommend the Kershaw Cryo in that price range.

http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Cryo-Speed-Folding-Knife/dp/B0074FI28Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344459494&sr=8-1&keywords=kershaw+cryo

Blade is 2.75" (a quarter inch bigger than the SOG) and it weighs in at about 4oz (about double the weight of the SOG). It has open assist (as does the SOG), adjustable clip for tip-up or tip-down carry right or left, frame lock as opposed to the pistol lock of the SOG and the steel is about the same although the cryo has a nice titanium carbo-nitride coating to help resist rust.

Argh... so I have to pick one Leatherman multitool to take with me to Venezuela for a year.... price is (mostly) not an object. But if I spend extra, I kinda want to get extra ;)

The Surge gives me an awl, and a dedicated flathead for prying. But the knife is crappy 420HC steel. And it can only carry a saw or file, but not both at the same time.
http://bigshowtools.com/images/lt830159x1000surge1.jpg

The Charge ALX gives me a 154CM blade and a nice cutting hook, but no awl and no prybar!
http://www.cyclocamping.com/prodimages/large/LEAT-830674-1.jpg

The Charge TTi gives me a S30V blade, cutting hook and flathead prybar... but still no awl, and a 80% price bump over the Surge.

I don't know... any thoughts?
Things get MacGyver'ed there A LOT, so I figure an awl qill be used a ton for scraping and punching tasks.... but so will a knife!
Any other heavy duty high multitools I'm missing?
I handled the SOG, I don't like it. AWESOME pliers, but I felt like I was going to snap the blades in half, they felt so think and weak.

I used to own the original Leatherman Super Tool from years ago, thats why I've set my sights on a Leatherman.
I have handled the SOG before, I don't like it. AWESOME pliers, and it has an awesome ability to customize whats in it, but the tools felt so thin and flimsy, I felt like I was going to snap the blades in half, and they didn't lock with a very confident click.

Oh yeah, prices:
Surge $70
Charge ALX $90
Charge TTi $112

If you are worried about having a pry bar/scraping implement I would go with whichever multi tool that works and then attach a mini pry bar from county comm with a small lanyard to your tool. works great as a way to pull your tool out of your pocket/case and then it is a dedicated prying device. These things work great and last forever. http://www.countycomm.com/widgy.html I have had one in my little survival kit for a while and found it very useful.

420HC may not be super steel but it will get scary sharp and even if it isn't the best at holding an edge it is really easy to resharpen. I would go with the Surge with a saw or file, depending on which you may use more at work.

You could always carry a second small knife in a pocket with some decent serrations to take the place of a dedicated saw. :tu

oh yeah, forgot to mention -It's illegal to carry a knife in Venezuela. Jail. not fun ;) -- a bit less likely if the knife is inside a multitool -- so my trusty benchmade is getting sidelined. :(

And tools are VERY expensive down there. -- this tool won't be for EDC, this will be for a mostly home toolbox. Building, fixing, repairing, you name it. Last year I used my old one to disassemble and fix a laptop, break into a locked strongroom with a stripped out lock, string wire, and fix plumbing. that was in the span of a few weeks. This time around I'm moving there - It will be my everything! :)

Interesting idea..... If they could swap the scissors for an Awl in the TTi, I'd take it! But i'm not so sure on that one - seems taht each of the models has it's own handle size and locking specs, not sure the Awl from a full size 4.5" long Surge/SuperTool would fit on a 4" Charge... never know till I ask I suppose... or till I buy both, physically compare em, then return one :D

So it's been asked before, why carry a blade?

Here's a story for ya'll about the importance of EDC'ing a blade of some kind, ALL the time. And its related to the Leatherman discussion I already started :).

I used to own a Leatherman Super Tool (the original :tu). Last year I gave it to a friend in Venezuela, I knew he would get some good use out of it. Little did I know how much!

Last month he was driving in the car with his girlfriend, on the highway, out in the middle of nowhere. The car was in an accident, completely mangled and totaled. Miraculously, both of them escaped being crushed, but they came to rest with the seatbelt wrapped around his girlfriends neck, rapidly choking her. Out came the Leatherman on his hip and he cut the seatbelt off her. More than likely saved her life. And today they are both fine!

Moral of that story - always have a blade! Some kind of survival tool stashed under the seat would have been useless in that situation, he only had what was on him at the time. The rest of the car was impressively crushed, mangled, and "reorganized"!

I'll swap it myself if the geometry will fit and they'll sell me the replacement part - or heck, sell me the part for a few bucks and I'll worry about the fitting myself!! :D
But along the same lines, if the geometry fits, that means upgrading the blade on the Surge to a the S30V also might fit as well :tu

Not so much a Wave fan for this particular "must do everything and then a bit more" usage - other models all have additional features that I would like to have some if not all of - Awl, better knife steel, replaceable wire cutter blades (supertool)

So rather than staring at pictures and trying to pick one, I just purchased all 4 of them from amazon, and I'll pay $5 to send back the 3 that I don't want!

4" Charge TTi
4" Rebar
4.5" Surge
4.5" Super Tool 300

There's a much bigger size difference between 4" and 4.5" than I realized!

The Rebar is identical to the iconic Super Tool 300, just smaller, a lot smaller. The handles are thinner, it's a nice carry size.

I must have a bad sample of the Surge, it's loose and rattly when closed (but sending to to them would surely fix it)

I worry a lot about the strength of the Charge TTi's pliers, putting a crimper forward at the tip really screws up their structural integrity IMO.
GOOD NEWS is that the awl on the 4" Rebar looks like it's a perfect match to fit in the 4" Charge TTi in place of the scissors.

And as for the rest... I'll spare you the blow by blow review of the 4 models, suffice only to say that they're all good in some aspects, and it's going to be a tough decision.

Going thru my dresser, sorting clothes for an upcoming trip, I ran across these I had hidden away in the past:

A small Buck assisted opener

Agreed, I am thinking this will be my carry but it is pretty big so we will see.

Not sure if I ever posted this before but I found a picture of a Gerber Mark II that is almost identical to my fathers knife I have.
from what I can find it was produced in '77 and it has a custom leather sheath the same as this pic:

Traded out my Strider SMF for a Large Sebenza, pretty nice knife. Not the 'pinnacle of knifedom' and certainly not an XM-18 but still a pretty impressive knife. Can't agreed with the price tag though. They definitely need to come down about $75-$100 before I could consider it reasonable.

While CRK is one of the few companies out there willing to make lefties, I just haven't been attracted to the Sebenza and while I love the blade on the Umnumzaan, I'm not thrilled with the handle profile or the price tag.

That is kind of why I started getting rid of my production knives and started ordering customs. Lovin' the knife I am EDCing now. Sure the price was a little on the high side but it is exactly what I wanted, built like a tank and a true lefty.

Yeah if you're a lefty it is awfully hard to get a quality knife. The Sebenza is a good slicer, the knife lock up is amongst the best I've seen. The opening is pretty damn smooth but I expected better on that. Yeah the handle on the Umumzaan or whatever it's called turned me off.

Unfortunately the price tag on the CRK's is definitely way overpriced. The Sebenza would be a great knife at ~$300, at $410 it's just another good knife. I was underwhelmed, same with the Strider. They are REALLY simple knives, I can't see the justification for their price tags at all. I've owned 2/3 and held all 3....the XM-18 is the only one worth it's price tag. Even then I find that there is no perfect knife no matter how much you spend or what you buy.

Mine's black with the 14C28N steel. I have not had any rust issues.

My Skyline arrived, it is a nearly perfect EDC "cheap" knife. Super slim, super light weight and quality built. I can't feel it at all in my front pocket.

I was going to buy a Para2 but they appear unavailable for a good price currently, I am not as big of a fan of the Military compared to the Para2 based upon lock location. I am deciding between the following knives, I like them all:

DPx HEST 2.0 (Love the bottle opener)
Hogue EX01 (Like the lock)
ZT 0550 (Beautiful)
Bradley Alias 1 (Poor man's Sebenza)

Any thoughts or opinions on these?

You realize all those listed have the lock in the same place as the military right except the hogue? What will be the purpose of this knife? Just regular edc? Dressy edc?

Similar, but I would rather have the Para2 if I was going to get a Spider. I don't wanna buy the model I didn't REALLY want from them. I believe the Military is a linerlock under a G10 and these listed are all frame locks, which I like much more. The one I am looking for will be general use, with a rare rough day in the woods. I don't do much with a blade at work other than open the occasional box or letter. I am leaning towards the ZT currently because there are tons of scales available to keep it interesting.

Why not get the 0350 or 0300

Not a knife guy so please pardon the ignorance.
Thinking of getting one and think I am interested in the type that ejects straight outward, as opposed to jack knife type.
Any pros or cons on that thought and any suggestions on something reasonably priced for now, until I fall off that cliff also and get into more expensive ones

Out the front? Impractical as a tool decent as a weapon. Had one but sold it because its more of a novelty than a tool. Fun to play. If ur gonna go that route don't cheap out, u get what u pay for

Not as tool, purely for defense.

For some reason I like the look of the 0550 better, kinda machine/industrial style. Plus I think the 0350 is not a frame lock but liner lock and the 0300 is just kinda fat looking. Personal preference only. The titanium frame locks are just sexy!
I like the 0560 too but it is out of my price range.

I wonder if I can find a low rider clip for the 0550, that would be perfect.
It comes stock with the same designed clip as the Skyline I just got, it's a nice clip but rides a bit high.

So I cashed in a couple days of 2012 vacation and ordered a couple knives.
Can't wait for them to show up! Will post pics!!!

Black G10 Spyderco Para2
Black G10 ZT 0550 Gen2

The ZT 0550 Gen2 has the same pocket clip as the 0560 so it sits deeper in the pocket, this makes me happy.
Also the Gen2 has an easier open due to a redesigned frame lock bar.
Here is the updated model, compare to the pic above:

I'll bet it suprised theguy with the chainsaw. I once cut through the edge of a bullet with the chainsaw. Looked to be 30 cal'ish, complete with lands so if probably wasn't too old, maybe.

Well my Spyderco PM2 fell through, after 8 days of waiting for the knife to arrive I e-mailed the vendor from Amazon to find out their stock had run out. That is terrible service that I had to ask why it had not arrived. Ordered on the 22nd, still awaiting my refund.
