When i contacted strider this is the message they sent back telling me about the knife

"The knife is a product Strider KNives Manufactures directly for Department of Defense clients.
It is manufactured from a very special alloy of Copper Beryllium.
This alloy is employed where NON-SPARKING requirements are at hand.
We have been making this product which is our design, for over 10 years now and the product received a National Stock Number several years ago.
It is still being ordered, made and shipped to units today."

A very nice choice, you'll enjoy your Strider they are built like friggen tanks....maybe better. Hard to argue with the warranty as well. $15 bucks and whatever you did to it is good as new. If you are actually capable of putting a scratch on that bad motherf**ker.

What do you think of the cold steel punch knives?

Mine is the Safe Keeper II and while I have yet to put it through anyone's skull, I have no doubt that I could. Very well built and extremely sharp. The sheath has plenty of tie down holes so it is easily attatched to things and it is very secure in the sheath.

My everyday carry knife is a Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) "Point Guard" [Right] and my occasional carry is a CRKT "Vele Wasp" [Left].
I have really abused the PG and it's held up perfectly over the last three years.
BTW I paid less than $30 for those knives together, I treat my everyday carry too rough to actually invest a whole lot into it.

It is a Gerber that was my fathers, it looks very much like the Mark II in the picture.
It is one of the few things I have to remember him by, it has been in my possesion since his passing about 25 years ago.

for tantos you need to do each edge separately. Focus on the belly then do the tip where the angle starts. If you do both at the same time you will round off your secondary point. I use http://www.basspro.com/Lansky-Sharpening-System--Standard-Kit/product/41168/-405783?cmCat=CROSSSELL_THUMBNAIL Its cheap and effective. Just remember to count your strokes or you will throw off the blade geometry.

Mailman is here but is taking FOREVER to do everyones boxes. Pictures of my new blade when I can get my grubby paws on it.

Neat little buck Blak Smyth

My EDC now is a Leatherman Wave. Before I got that, I carried a SAK Explorer, and a Cold Steel Voyager. On trips and such, I still stick the CS in my front right pocket. The wave either in the pocket or sheath, depending on what I am dong that day.

I carried a SpyderCo Delica for years until I lost it and was pissed. I bought a Benchmade Aphid that I carried for a bit before I gave it to my brother as a New Zealand present when he left the US to shear sheep with the Kiwis.

Now I carry an Benchmade Axis (580S assisted open):

http://www.gpknives.com/images/benchmade/580S%5Blarge%5D.jpg

I'm not gonna lie, I've cut my fair share of triple caps with this puppy.

The knife that's in my car is the SOG Seal Pup which has survived many a backpacking excursion, salt water use, and backpacking in Italy and New Zealand. I love that knife.

My other regulars are Buck hunters, the SOG Northwestern Ranger, classic Leatherman tool, SOG tool, Gerber tool, and assorted Swiss Armies I've picked up throughout the years. I am dying for the Benchmade Infidel next...but for now it's way out of my paygrade. Summer is the slow season.

I've held the Infidel a few times, unless you REALLY want it....I'd get a Microtech Scarab instead, preferably an older one. Maybe a 06 or earlier "safe queen".

Victorinox Tinker, the one MacGyver carried the most often (although he was also known to carry the Huntsman and Spartan as well). Also have a Victorinox Classic on the key chain as a admittedly diminutive backup. Would like to find an inexpensive multi-tool that I could customize a bit (i.e. that I could disassemble and fabricate a beer faucet wrench for)

The Microtechs are slimmer, carry amazingly well. I mean seriously I forget I'm carrying my Ultratech all the time. I like the position of the thumb slide better on the Microtechs.

IMHO the Infidels are just priced too high for what they are. They need to slim them down. The Microtechs also weigh about half as much. They literally aren't there. Great carry knives.

Much more options with the Microtechs as well.

I'd get an old one though. My 06 has no hangups and works wonderfully every time. The new ones are for $hit.

I strongly disagree. Currently Microtechs customer service sucks but ive noticed no difference in the QC since they moved from Florida. All of mine fire just as strong never had a misfire. If you CAN find an older one go for it but like ive said i havent noticed any differences.

I do however agree that Microtech is far better than the Infidel. The benchmade has significantly more blade play than any of the microtechs. For an EDC I would go with either the ultratech at ~3.5" or the slimmer but shorter and more expensive troodon ~3. Just my experience and .02

Stay Sharp.

Another one of my hobbies...
My everyday knife is usually a Boker. Dad passed away with cancer last April and in August some meth heads broke in my house while I was at work and stole every knife in the house (including those of my dad and my son's--even the hunting knives). We recovered more than half of them but for almost a month the Boker that was in my pocket that day was the only knife I had left. Dad had several German knives and custom made knives. He was a former meat cutter and loved Solingen steel. I really like Kershaw knives but only have a couple now.

so what seems to be the general consensus on Spyderco Knives? I was thinking about picking up a Spyderco Endura or Resilience or Pacific Salt and maybe a Tenacious.

I have three of the four. The resilience is wonderfully priced for a 4" blade. But the size isnt quite people friendly. The tenacious seems to be the best of both world. Im not a huge fan of the endura only because its a lockback and isnt quite as fast to close as the Resilience or tenacious so i find i leave it home more often than the others. Same goes for the Pacific salt. Lockbacks are too slow for me but the H-1's rust resistance is impressive. Consider this if you are an avid boater or live near the sea. The 8cr13/14MOV steel in the resilience/tenacious is easy to sharpen but will rust on you if you dont keep a thin layer of oil on it. Whenever i find myself by the beach or water I just wipe some face grease on it for peace of mind. :ss

All this is my personal opinion ymmv.

I have carried this Spyderco for many years around town, in the woods and on the boat in fresh and salt water. It has been immersed in both fresh and saltwater numerous times and I have had no problems with it. I do rinse it off in fresh water after being in salt, and I try to keep it oiled, but that is just regular preventative maintenance. Similar to a gun, you gotta take care of it.

CPM S30V is much more resistant to rust than 8cr13MOV. It also commands a higher price too. Gotta love the Paramilitary.

Yesterday was a sad day for me. Lost my BM Griptilian that I'd had for less than 2 months. Not really sure how it happened had it clipped to my pants pocket, but walking around a muddy jobsite some how it worked itself out.

Just picked up a new "travel" knife the Kershaw Skyline. http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=430&brand=kershaw

Got it for $30 on Amazon, I know it is not the super fancy knife I usually pick up, but it is stunning for a $30 knife. I highly recommend this knife to anyone.

Go to better kitchen supply stores, of chef supply (whatever they are called in your area) and buy Japanese water stones, they are not that expensive and work like a charm. Sushi chefs use them and I can't imagine a sharper edge than that. You can also buy them on Amazon last time I looked. Easy to use as well.

You need to dig further into his site young padawan.

Wow, those Spiderco fieldtrip shots are great!

I can't get into knives...I have too much of a "need one of everything" personality.

I did used to EDC some really nice limited production butterfly knives...but as I got older, I realized the risk of getting busted with them, or at very least having them confiscated it too great.

I guess I'm growing up.

Now I just carry a cheap Gerber from Walmart (I lose them enough it better be cheap), and I have a Mora for camping.

I did have one of these exquisite Swamp Rat Waki (small sword), but I couldn't bring myself to actually *use* it, and wound up selling it for $100 more than I paid for it just recently!

I told you what I thought already. $300 waste of money.

http://graymanknives.com/satu.html

This one is slightly better.....

But again, get a damn Strider for like $50-$75 more.

I agree with Wolfman, it's plain and all smooth. I don't see it being used for what it's intended to.

That pivot is weaksauce too. Especially for a knife of that cost. It's supposed to be built like a tank, but instead it fails and will develop blade play if put to any hard use task.

They also look entirely too blocky....I can't imagine that being comfortable.

In the future if they work out a few things I could see them being able to carry a $300 price tag, but not right now.....not when Striders are $50-$75 more and a XM-18 is $100 more.

from what i can find a new strider is 100 more and i cant even find a new xm-18, but used ones are like 600+. If we are going to compare prices its new to new. i dont want someones used knife.

and pivot pin aside, a xm-18 and strider is illegal by length in michigan. I also dont carry a knife for a fashion item. so it being smooth and blocky means nothing to me.

The strider is nice though, the xm-18 is a resounding hell no. I might want to spend some money on a knife but i havent lost my mind.

Just picked up a Kershaw Needs Work.. Sweet little knife. I noticed myself leaning way towards something with a assisted open, even after toying with a few others that weren't assisted open. I guess I just like having it, having that nice snap at the end of opening. Any ways, I saw these at Gander mountain for $45, but ultimately settled for the one at Wal-Mart for a mere $34 plus tax. Hi, my name is Francis, and I'm an addict.

Fortunately my addiction has been tempered by both a lack of funds to pursue it, a preference for things that go bang, and some VERY picky requirements for an EDC knife.

First, my strongly held dislikes:
1) I don't like liner lock knives of any kind. They just don't feel good to me.
2) I don't like any of the auto/assisted opening knives I've tried (SOG, benchmade, S&W). I just don't feel "in control" when using it. It also makes for a longer closing motion.
3) I LOVE AXIS lock / ARC Lock / whatever special TM name a particular manufacturer wants to call it, I love it dearly and would be hard pressed to find something that words better for my hands and use.

Side note about the AXIS style locks - I generally feel like I can open it just as fast as an auto, and close it as fast as it opened. Just pull back on the lock to release all tension on the blade while simultaneously imparting just a tiny bit of momentum with your wrist and it's open (don't forget to release the lock button just as quickly as you pressed it so the blade stays open). Same exact motion in reverse to close. Most people that see it in action are convinced it's an auto knife, and some ask if it's legal :r

I know that list is pretty restrictive, but I've learned what I like over the years :)

So what do I carry? Couple things. Been a benchmade fan for a number of years, ever since an ex-gf, under the wise guidance of my best friend, gave me a full size Griptillian 550SBK for my birthday many years ago. I managed to hang onto it for many years, but eventually lost it.

At one point when a friend saw my Griptillian, he liked it and got himself a mini-griptillian. I really like the fit of the mini. The blade was almost as big, every bit as functional, but the handle seemed like it was 50% smaller and less bulky. Sheeple don't recoil from it as much. So when I eventually lost my full size one, I ran out and got a Mini-Griptillian 556SBK. She's well used after 3 years of daily carry, but I'll get another just like it tomorrow if I lose it. (although I've debated getting the 557SBK tanto blade). As an added bonus, the blade clocks in just under 3" and avoids any legal trouble. Takes a very sharp edge and holds it for a while (but not as long as I would like).

My second daily carry knife is a small fixed, weak side backup / utility / pry bar. (photos below). Local knife maker, don't remember their name. 90% of the time I carry it in a kydex sheath at the small of my back, weak side draw. So comfortable I can't feel it, even if I'm laying down. I also have a second kydex sheath tied into an imitation mercharness for the occasional days when belt carry is not an option. Fixed blades are much easier to clean, so this is what I use to cut up food or other messy tasks that I would rather not get inside my folder. This is also the knife I hand to other people, because I don't care if they're careless with it. It's thick and built like a TANK, bu my only complaint is that the grind doesn't take a good enough edge, its never really "sharp". But its sturdy and maintains its medium edge damned near indefinitely without sharpening.

I also own a SOG Mini-Vulcan which I love, it feels amazing in your hand and opens like butter, but I found that I could not carry it effectively. It features a deep concealment pocket clip that hides more of the knife in your pocket.... but that feature also meant when I gripped the top part to pull it out QUICKLY, I wasn't getting my fingers chocked up close enough to the center of the knife. I was pulling it out by the top edge, and in a rapid deployment, the blade coming out added to that imbalance and jeopardized my grip on it. Once it was out however, it melts into your hand like it was made for it!

Fixed blades have become a fascination and the "want" list is way too high. Some day I would love to own a Busse, although I suspect that INFI steel, while very good, is part hype.

Interesting site, ninja. I like that the Duece has a little thicker steel than most of the ones before it. Not that .204 inch isn't sufficient. But .25 has a better sound to it for the heavy work of zombie control!

You can't tell me this guy doesn't look just a little creepy, psycho, and maybe 1/4 of the way towards zombieville already? (http://zombietools.net/images/weapons/phalanx-max-1200.jpg)

--------------------------------------------------

Busse can be a little pricey.... BUT what you get is definitely top top grade steel.

zombietools makes some cool looking stuff... and I'm guessing its pretty damned durable too. But I think you're definitely paying a little more for the fancy looks and marketing that goes along with it at the cost of quality. For the same price, another maker could probably produce a blade with more fineness and a grade or two up in steel quality. :2

That deuce looks damned cool. I'm sure it would do the job wonderfully and look kickass mounted somewhere.

I do tend to favor something a little more maneuverable however. Hallways, quick stabs, but long enough to get a little reach and gain a little momentum in open air swinging. Likewise balanced right as to allow for very quick and precise cuts, as opposed to the brutally effective (IF it hits) cleaving of the deuce.

--------------------------------------------------

Sadly, all of the following knives are obtainable... for a price, and were much cheaper if purchased first hand from the manufacturer at the time of production and availability. :)

For the same general money I would probably buy the Scrapyard Scrapizashi $320 .... (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/jerrybusse/ScrapizashiBlack2.jpg) not so pretty, but more finesse than the duece. I saw a great youtube video of the thing being bent 180 degrees - didn't break, and returned about 90% to form. That's quality that I don't think the zombietools would be able to match.

If it was at all affordable, I would gladly jump up to the Swamp Rat Rodent Waki $550 (http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=006703) .... there's videos on youtube of this thing chopping down trees and then being shaving sharp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRnVY9qLCEE&feature=related

And of course you double that to get INFI steel, but I think the Waki hit's the sweet spot.
Busse AK47 $1150 (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5046/5320919577_579b03aa22.jpg)
And frankly, if I was spending that much, I would get a Busse Gladius (see below)

--------------------------------------------------

Now, if money were no object, this is what I would get. Hands down, the end all be all sword for me! It's a thing of beauty!

Had I that kind of disposable income and I ever saw it for sale at that price, it wouldn't even be a question :)
The Satin finish would be my prefered finish. not as tactical as black, but its just too damned pretty on that gladius!
I'm not a big guy & I've got small hands, so I could wield the gladius two-handed with great finesse or brutal chopping, while maintaining the ability to use it one handed in a pinch.

Finally, I don't think I've ever seen a bigger single group of blade p r * n in one set of photos than right here. Yes, I realize he's a dealer, but still this guys set of blades is incredible.

I carry a small, black Bushnell folder clipped to my belt on a daily basis (until I get my CCW, at which point my belt will carry something with a little more oomph. But I'll probably still carry the knife).

Not sure of the model but the construction is very solid and it hasn't failed me in opening or cutting yet. Just a little pressure on the thumb stud toward the wrist and it pops right open. Perfect for slicing a box at work or turning a stick into a toothpick during warm, outdoor stogie sessions.

Which CRK is that Mychal? I've heard good things. I went Strider, I like the Hinderer XM-18's as well. Someday I'll bite the bullet. It would be a dream to have all three (Strider SMF/Large Sebenza/XM-18 or 24)

Looks great though :tu

Bill it is a left handed Umnumzaan. Slightly bigger than the sebby and heftier. Hinderer knives are amazing, but that is double the price of this and I could not see how it was better.

Yeah they are definitely not easy to score for any decent price. If you are lottery odds lucky you'll pay $400.

I knew something was different, lefty that was it. Bigger and heftier then the Sebenza? Nice! I always worried that the Sebenza wouldn't handle the abUSE I give it.

I think you picked a winner :tu :tu

Thanks I am pretty excited about it. A Guy on bladeforums did a long term in-depth review and did everything from cutting fruit to digging in the dirt, light sheet metal cutting and the knife held up like brand new. I have literally never seen or held a better knife, right from the moment I opened the box.

clarification - what are the limiting factors that prevent you from carrying the Flash II on those days, and what specifications must its substitute hold in order to avoid those same complications?

I really like a Benchmade Mini-Griptillian 556SBK for my EDC. draws and opens fast and clean. No auto, but I'll bet you can get it open almost as fast as an auto, and close it 20x faster. Really it's just the size. I'm either wearing khakis for work or just don't want to carry something as big. Function-wise, the only thing I don't like are liner locks. I just can't get used to them. No combo blades either.

I'd grab any Benchmade in D2 Tool Steel. The blades tend to hold up for quite a long time and Benchmade has a great warranty.

Shame they discontinued the Benchmade Mini-Nitrous Stryker as that would have been a perfect knife for you. It was available in many configurations too. PE Satin spear point or tanto.....

Which is unfortunate, because there's a lot more "slim" liner lock options available!!

Color wise, are you looking for something that doesnt have a black handle?

not sure, maybe that would look better with kakis?
http://www.benchmade.com/images/products/product_lgshot/pd1558.jpg

BIG drawback to the benchmade for your purpose is that unlike the SOG which sits flush with the pocket line, the benchmade pokes out just a tad. I PREFER this for easy draw. I've got a SOG Vulcan (sits flush) which I really like... but never ended up carrying because it always felt unbalanced when drawing it out - hand was only gripping the very end of it. BUT for purposes of work and kakis..... flush has its advantages :)

(you can see what I'm talking about if you look at the clip in the pic below - screws ot the end all sit above the pocket line)

SoG does use that low rider pocket clip that keeps 100% of the knife in your pocket. I just don't like the cheap steel and cheap handles. They seem very unbalanced to me due to the Zytel handles.

I don't mind having some of the knife stick out, and sometimes you can be quite surprised at how these larger heavier knives carry.

I don't know if your oppose to it but for light carry I usually have a Microtech Ultratech. Very slim and very light but of course it is an automatic out the front knife. I've carried it for 2 years and haven't had a problem yet. Get an old model '00-'05 and they are built very well, some of the newer ones....not so much :td

It might just be the Blade Show 2010 or 2011 models but mine broke 3 times and is still broken. Sent it in twice, it just doesn't work.

My 2006 model works perfectly and has never failed to fire.

I heard people were having problems with the newer Halos too regarding the internals breaking and sending it in with minimal luck.

The word was current production Microtechs quality has gone down quite a bit and we all know about their non-existent customer service.

Sorry wolfgang but I am with bill here. I bought a 2011 ultratech and within two weeks of owning it two if the screws fell out. On top of that the screws are a priority bit and you can only source screws from microtech. If I waited to get new screws it would have taken two months without and gurentee of them falling out again or not. I also had a friend buy an ludt, and within two months it was extremely loose when locked up and had gotten very dull from extremely light use. I personally handled this knife many times and was amazed at the poor build quality compared to my early 2000's microtechs.

IMHO new microtech are poorly made with lower quality tempering of the steel they are using. It is really dissapointing to me as there were my favorite knife maker.

+1 on the 154CM -- my EDC Benchmade has it and I like it. Holds a decent edge, and sharpens easily without spending 20 min at the stone. A few deft strokes on a fine grit stone or a ceramic honing rod every once in a while will keep her like a razor.

Well, this isn't exactly a "pocket" knife, but it seems this thread does double duty as the only "blade" related thread here, so I figured I'd share my new acquisition. (and they make pocket knives too ;))

I generally consider Shun Classics to be great knives, but a little overpriced, something of equal quality with perhaps less aesthetics can usually be had for less. But when I saw this one for 45% off... well I couldn't resist :)

(I know the pics are a little cheesy, I was doing something else with the camera and just tossed the blade and a block in there on a whim!)

ZT350 can be had for a good amount under $200 (usually around $140). The ZT composite I have can be had for just under 200 and the stonewash on the blade makes it really hard to see any scratches or blemishes. It is a beautiful piece and opens quite quickly with the AO.

The only negative on it is the left-handed thumbstud. It is near impossible to get to and the jimping can bite you when using the flipper although neither issue is too bad...

As for autos, I haven't played with any as I cannot carry them so I can't help you there. :tu

It's a Microtech Combat Troodon. The lock up is good, only very minor blade play which is almost required in an OTF knife.

Tried The GLASS BREAKER, YET? BEAUTIFUL KNIFE!:tu

They are in FL. It varies by state. In FL if you have a CCW permit you can carry one.

We can't. Our draconian state laws classify these are "switchblade" type knives. Of course, no one would care outside of Hippieville (Austin).

I'm a big fan of that, and the Zing. The Zing is like sub $40, and it's worth it for sure.

In other news, ever since looking at this thread, I've been toying around with getting into knives again. I still have a couple. I've been in love with this.

The only thing about that Benchmade customizer is that it makes the knife soooo expensive in comparison to buying one premade.

Still looking for another knife though. Thinking Spyderco Para2:

This is true. But I was tossing the idea about getting the USCG logo on the blade, because my Wife is in the CG. Not only would it look cool, but it'd also help my case on getting it. :noon

See the problem is...the knife has ZERO practical use. I think that video poster is HIGHLY mistaken if he thinks that is a good self defense knife. Flailing around a 17 OAL folder is not a good idea. I also consider it highly unconcealable and 1 pound for a knife is A LOT.

Also want to point out there aren't very many states with a ZERO limit for blade length, which is what you would need.

They use to send me catalogs all the time, dvds, of the annoying company owner doing a bunch of "tests" with his knives. None of them were very valid IMHO.

Also most of their knives use Aus-8 which is NOT a premium steel. Pretty much the very basic or intro steel, just like 440C.
