You're right about Smoltz, nothing but a disappointment so far. The only decent game he pitched was the rain delayed one vs Atlanta when he looked good for 4 inninings and then was replaced after the delay. I don't know if it's the American vs. National thing or if he is just too old. It will be interesting to see how long the Sox stick with him though.

On another subject, I think it is GREAT the Wakefield made the All Star team. A well deserved (even if it is for career acheivement) award.

Listening to Smoltz's interviews, he freaking thinks the Sox are about rehabbing him. WRONG it's about winning ball games.

He should be embarrassed to get beat up by the worst offensive team in the AL.

Talk radio is burning up with the Halladay to Boston talk.
The Sox can afford him, and have a lot of major league prospects to deal.
But will JP trade within the division? Their are only a few teams that can do this deal with the Sox being the top contender?

A big factor would be how much time Halladay has left on his contract. I could see them giving up Buckholtz and a minor league position player prospect if Halladay is not a lame duck and has time left after this season. Will be interesting to watch as this develops.

It would be nice if they could get something, even a minor leaguer, for Lugo but he has to go regardless. I hope Bucholtz pitches lights out and makes the decision to ship him back to Pawtucket real difficult. The kid has done everything they have asked of him since being demoted to Portland last year and really does deserve another shot.

I hope Bucholtz pitches lights out and makes the decision to ship him back to Pawtucket real difficult. The kid has done everything they have asked of him since being demoted to Portland last year and really does deserve another shot. The main beef with him and why he was sent down is that he did not listen to coaching. He was not listening to the pitching coach or to Tek. Hopefully he has learned to listen. Besides that point, who would you remove from the rotation for Bucholtz? Smoltz is the only one that I could see and somehow I trust Smoltz more when it gets to crunch time. I suspect that this is a showcase for a trade. Maybe he would ultimately have more success at the major league level with a fresh start with another team. On another topic, Lugo has been DFA'd. Bye bye Julio.:D

Lugo is gone Lowrie is back, but I don't think the Sox are going hang their hat on that?
Lowrie has a half season under his belt, he played great D but not much of a bat.
Nick Green has been playing very good SS the guy has a cannon of an arm, but slumping and looking bad at the plate.
I think the Sox make a deal for a Shortstop ?

He hit .300 in 337 major league at bats and is hitting .332 in the minors this year. He is only 27 years old and would probably come pretty cheap. His name is Mike Morse. I know that the two reasons teams develop their Farm Systems are to staff the Big Club and to trade prospects for current needs. BUT, I would really hate to see Buchholtz, Michael Bowden, Daniel Bard or even Junichi Tazawa traded this year when we are virtually certain that Penney and probably Smoltz will be gone next year. People get hurt, slumps happen and young pitchers are baseball's most precious commodity. The Sox' real need is for a power hitter who can play a couple of infield positions. I hope they don't give up their future for it. (By the way, I'd be happy to see Dice-K go, but I think he has a no-trade clause)

UPDATED: Red Sox close to acquiring Adam LaRoche for two prospects
By: Alex Speier

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette first reported that the Red Sox and Pirates have agreed to the parameters of a trade sending first baseman Adam LaRoche to Boston. LaRoche is a power-hitting first baseman who has averaged 24.5 homers over the past four seasons with the Braves and Pirates. He is hitting .247 with a .329 OBP and .441 slugging mark for the Pirates this year, down from career totals of .269/.338/.486.

In exchange, WEEI.com has learned from multiple baseball sources that the Red Sox will send Double-A shortstop Argenis Diaz and Single-A pitcher Hunter Strickland to Pittsburgh once the deal is finalized. For details, visit the Full Count blog.

Sox pitching coach says Smoltz gets another start.
This guy is getting hammered by the worst teams in baseball, what's going to happen when he faces the Iron, he will be lucky to get out of the first inning?
Between Smoltz and Dice-K out of 15 starts they have a combined record of 2+9.

Dice-K should just man up he stunk out the house this year.
He is blaming the Sox because he got hammered every start? Well he came to spring training directly from the WBC, the Sox had nothing to do with his training or conditioning.
Of course he can't pitch like in Japan, Japanese baseball is not even as good as AAA in the USA.

All throughout the game I couldn't help but think of the rain-delayed game earlier in the season when they blew that big lead. they looked like they were going to do it again, but finally the bats woke up. 5 for 5 for V. Martinez -nice!

Positive note: the new kid Josh Reddick looked very good, nice to see a home grown slugger.

Negative note: Clay Bucholtz - get the kid a shrink. He has the stuff physically, but he obviously still has some issues to work out.

That's why he was sent down last year. I gotta wonder if he's expecting to have a perfect game every time now and beating himself up when it doesn't happen. At this point, we only have one excellent pitcher. Lester has been touch and go, Penny has been off lately and Smoltz has been a joke. When is Wake back from the DL?

Yeah, it is definitely a problem. I gotta admit, after the interview Matsuzaka gave to the Japanese paper where he attributed his struggles in the US to the conditioning program, which apparently was not suitable for Japanese physiology, I have no further respect or interest in him.

Yeah, this week might well be make or break for our chances at the division, two games at the Rays and four at the Yankees... With Wake still on the DL, now with sciatica, so probably out for another month. 2/5 starting pitchers able to win games just doesn't cut it.

Evan Longoria, which I feel is the best player in Baseball and kills the Sox time after time is allowed to hit two home runs including the game winner.
It's a freakin shame Lester goes out pitches a great game strikes out 10 should have been at least 12 he was getting squeezed by some bad umpiring.
You can pin this loss on Francoma, Bard and Saito.:(

Yep that's true the offence has been crap, for a while now.
Tito got to start putting the best line up on the field and stop worring about players feelings.
Bay and Drew have done nothing for two months,
Teck is back to his old ways of being an easy out and should be limited to playing twice a week.
Mike Lowell should get some time at DH.
Ortiz should sit agienst leftys.

If you folks don't like Tek at catcher, Martinez will be a real eye opener defensively. They moved him to first because his knees were going and because he sucked defensively at catcher. Moved him back to catcher because he was a worse first baseman. Get used to the fact that the Red Sox will pick up Tek's option for next year, as the article mentioned, he is the third most productive catcher this year.:D

Tek is the worst catcher in baseball he was ranked 28th a few weeks ago as far as throwing out runners?
The argument that he handles pitcher so well is nonsense.
If he was so great the pitchers should never lose a game.
At least Martinez can hit, he also made the 09 All Star team as a catcher.

Yeah, was definitely a great game, though I would obviously have preferred a different result. Watched the first few innings, then went off to see a movie with my fiance. Got back and hopped online to check the score, only to see they are still scoreless in the twelfth. Watched the rest of the game.

Appreciate that, John, and three of those four games were dang good on both sides. Your Sox seem to be in trouble, and from what I've seen you can't blame the starting pitchers for it. Half of your line-up appear to be DHs,1Bs, or beat-up catchers past their prime, and most of the rest are kids. You need some good veteran outfielders.

the good news: Swept the Blue Jays, 1st in the wild card race, Bucholtz and Lester looked great, Big Papi, Drew and Bay are hitting, everyone seems to be getting healthier, Jerry Remy is baktonight and we now have a professional shortstop.

the bad news: Beckett imploded, 7 games behind the Evil Empire, Sox are actually thinking of bringing Dice-K back this year and Texas thinks they are the 2008 Rays.

news news: Big series with the Yankees coming up. Let's hope we're still talking about taking the AL East when it's over and are not just thinking about beating Texas.

gettysburgfreak

not to mention the pitching match up favors the yankees again this series. I think the reason Beckett did poorly his last start was V Teck did not catch him, who pretty much always catches for Beckett, and John Farrell was not available that game to go over the hitters, he was back home dealing with some family issues. As a former college pitcher I know how nice it is to have the same routine before each start and Beckett didnt have that.

The Red Sox better hope that the bats wake up at Fenway tomorrow. They are looking like an old tired team right now.

95 win season and the Sox go out with a whimper.
A very strange and uneven season to say the least.
Congratulations to the Angles and their fans.
Now go out and kick some Yankee a$$ ;)

I'm glad my Jays didn't have to deal with an on the field celebration. For the record, I will be cheering for the Red Sox in the post season. I just don't think they have the team this year to win it all.

Told ya!

Well the baseball season ended on an uncharacteristic whimper for the Sox yeaterday. Congrats to the Angels, they outplayed the Sox in every aspect of the game during this series and deserved the win. I hope they don't let up and go on to beat the Evil Empire.

As for the rest of Red Sox nation ... see you in spring training.

I don't know what Theo is up to, but so far it looks like a mess?
Trying to move Lowell and pay half his salary to move him. Yes he can't play the field anymore, but In the process you piss him off.
Gonzales signs with the Jays, Theo was hoping to get him for free, bad move.
What we are left with is Lowery and Green nothing more then utility players at best.
Bay is not signed and is looking for a ton of money and five years, Soxs won't go five?
A lot of talk about giving up the farm to trade for Halladay?
What we need is some power in the middle of the lineup, Ortiz is done he don't produce the big hits, no one is scared of him they throw fast balls by him and put the shift on.
We have a lot of holes to fill.
What do you think Nation?

Good bye Mikey Lowell, we'll miss you. You showed up every day, were always a professional, gave 100% all the time and exceeded everyone's expectations.

Theo -- we need a third baseman, (or even first baseman if Youk moves over)

I am almost certain Youk will be going to third which was his position originally. I am nervous about the Sox this year.....

Well it looks like the Sox are clearing the way for something big?
If it is to sign Adrian Beltre, this won't make them a better team and Theo should be fired.
The logical thing to do would move Lowell to first and Youk to third and save millions of dollars.
This team is a mess as it stands:td

I can't believe that they are poised to let Jason Bay walk. Considering what they pay JD Drew, to let Bay go for a few million is insanity. I know they are saying it's all about the years, but really doesn't an extra year simply translate to some money? Witness the dough they are throwing away to get rid of Mike Lowell, (a move I will never understand - he can play first and he can DH). I know it's still early in the hot stove season , but I'm concerned.

Red Sox are also about to sign Mike Cameron. Does not help the whole age thing and pretty much secures Bay not coming back.

It's not the money it's the years. The Sox were willing to pay 60 mil for four years. Bays agent broke it off he wants 5 years, Bays a good player but not a great player, A average left fielder at best, he hit a career high 36 homers Fenway Park was kind to him.
I hate to see him go , but Cameron age 36 will be a upgrade defensively, and still has some pop in his bat?
Theo is not done yet something still has to be done in the infield ?

Cameron hits lefty's very well, and most likely will split time with Jeremy Hermida that they got from the Marlins?
