That seems to be the MO with this guy. He has a terrible stretch of games then out of no where he throws a gem and has everyone scratching their heads thinking why can't he do this every time out.

Umpire crew for the Baltimore series just didn't have a clue. There is no way the kid Weiland should have been tossed for throwing a sinker that drifted in and hit the batter accidently. David Ortiz burst into the middle of Sox manager Terry Francona’s press conference in the media room upstairs from the Sox clubhouse, and was running hot about something.
Ortiz said “I’m [bleeping] pissed. We need to have a talk . . . you and me” before the manager and designated hitter agreed to talk about things at a more appropriate time.
Then Ortiz gave away exactly what was bothering him when he muttered “[Bleepin’] scorekeeper always [bleepin’] [bleep] up” while exiting the room.
Ortiz was most certainly upset about a change made by official scorer Chaz Scoggins in Wednesday night’s game that turned his first inning two-run single into a one-run single with an error on the left fielder allowing the second run to score. That means an RBI was taken away from Ortiz midway through the game, and he was upset enough about it to bust up Francona’s daily pregame meeting with the press with a few choice words.
When approached later in the clubhouse, Ortiz declined comment comment on the incident except to say it was "between me and Tito."

Thanks for the update, John. For Ortiz to go so postal over a single RBI, and for a decision made by his home scorekeeper no less, coupled with his "fight" on the field a month back, does not bode well for his mental and emotional stability.
Last year, when he got off to such a slow start and was being bashed by the fans and Boston press, he was correct to point out that they were wrong to jump to conclusions based upon a dozen games . . . even if his attitude then was perhaps overly aggressive. But this kind of crap is simply that . . . crap.
Oh, and to address your earlier query re A-Rod, I only refrained for the same reason I have not posted about the reported "recruiting violation" of Coach K down at Duke: namely, because I was awaiting more facts before expressing any judgement. But to make one thing clear, let me state emphatically that, if A-Rod did something MLB told him not to do, be it illegal or just merely foolish, and he never plays another game for the Yankees or for anyone else due to this, I have absolutely no problem at all with that. Baseball, the Yankees, and I shall all survive with or without A-Rod.

Yeah, I got your point from the get-go. But I would protest that, to this outsider, it seems the Boston fans have even shorter memories than do most "what have you done for me lately?" fans in other cities.
For instance, take Wade Boggs. He was one of your best players for, what, ten years? He helped you to the '86 Series, and it wasn't HIM who booted Mookie's ball. Then the management decided he was done, and cut him loose. Boggs thought he still had game, so signed with the Yankees . . . AND WAS SOUNDLY BOOED WHEN HE RETURNED TO FENWAY! OK, so maybe he wouldn't have been had he not been in Pinstripes, but was that his fault?
No doubt it was all the sweeter for him when he climbed on that horse in The Bronx, however. :r

OK, Boston fans, it's now rock-and-a-hard-place time. With the Yankee win this afternoon, and the Red Sox loss, New York's magic number is down to five. Meanwhile, the BoSox are only 1 1/2 ahead of the Rays for the wildcard, and just one in the loss column. Yanks and Rays have 7 games head-to-head coming.
It seems unlikely that Boston can take the AL East at this point, and in fact are more likely to lose out of the playoffs entirely than the former. So, do you bite the bullet and root root root for the hated Yankees, or does your destestation seep so deeply you'd sooner cut your noses off to spite your face?

Meanwhile, the BoSox are only 1 1/2 ahead of the Rays for the wildcard, and just one in the loss column. Yanks and Rays have 7 games head-to-head coming.
It seems unlikely that Boston can take the AL East at this point, and in fact are more likely to lose out of the playoffs entirely than the former. So, do you bite the bullet and root root root for the hated Yankees, or does your detestation seep so deeply you'd sooner cut your noses off to spite your face?
Hey, I'm not tweaking you just to get a rise . . . well, maybe a little :D . . . but am genuinely curious to know.
If the Red Sox aren't playing, there is no baseball, for me at least. I don't root for other teams, anymore than I would switch my allegiance to another country. I am a complete baseball partisan. I love the Sox, all other teams...well, you know.

Now there's the question. With all the superstar talent on this team, and maybe a couple prima-donnas thrown in for good measure, we're going to need someone Torre-esque.
I hope he doesn't leave, but if he does, he'll be unemployed for all of 10 minutes.
And I know I'll be one of the ones cheering him when he returns to Fenway with his new team. The man did a lot more than people give him credit for, and I'm not excited about the post-Francona era.

Any Sox fan who wants to lay this at the feet of Tito is delusional!
How quick fans forget the 86 years without a championship.
Tito delivered two in the last 8!
Scapegoating the manager is common practice, and Yankee fans are guilty of it too.
When Torre left, there was more than a small contingent of Yankee fans who were happy about it.
Torre, like Tito had his flaws, but they weren't the reasons for the team not winning championships.
Like Vin said, be careful what you wish for!

There were rumors yesterday on ESPN radio here in NY that Boston discreetly approached Joe Torre. Aside from the thought that it would be weird seeing Joe in a Red Sox uni, the main objection is that Boston may not be willing to pay Torre what he would demand. After dropping big bucks on Dice-K and Crawford, with (to date anyway) minimal return, these analysts feel John Henry might be gun-shy.

Edger Renteria 2 for 18.5 mil

J D Drew 5 for 70 mil

I don't agree with all of these
Lackey, is a bust, he has a broken head and can't get in the game. And he's not worth it.
J.D Drew, he is what was expected decent at times with no heart. But when it came to the playoffs he stepped it up.
Carl Crawford, the jury's still out on him,(1st year new team) can he get his head in the game of the Boston media, we'll see.
Daisuke, everyone and their brother was happy they got him he was a project that "ehh", worked in the beginning but fizzled out.
And the Sox have a revolving door at SS so those other two are a wash.
Look at RentAReck and Lugo they both played to there potential when they left here they don't have the heart to play in a place that really cares.

Its a shame....I liked Tito...he lived not far from me when he was with the Phillies...I guess he "lost" the clubhouse...tough to manage when you can't get thru to your players....From his statement:
"We met this morning to look back on the 2011 season and to consider the future of the Boston Red Sox, including my involvement with the club. I passed along my frustrations at my inability to effectively reach the players. After many conversations and much consideration, I ultimately felt that, out of respect to this team, it was time for me to move on," Francona said.
"I've always maintained that it is not only the right, but the obligation, of ownership to have the right person doing this job. I told them that out of my enormous respect for this organization and the people in it, they may need to find a different voice to lead the team."
There will be some more house-cleaning, no doubt....there are a lot pf good pieces there, just need someone to put the puzzle together...

I don't think so, Francona wanted to leave. Managers have a shelf life no matter how successful they were. The next manager may not be "better", but a different direction and voice was needed in the dug out.

Lots of nice talk, but Francona got fired. The Sox allowed him his dignity, but he still got fired. I think the White Sox will be thrilled to get him as will the Chicago players. I expect that Theo won't be far behind him, (and he'll probably end up on the other side of Chicago from Tito). John Henry gave Theo a blank check and he has not produced since 07. Henry expects to get more for his money than he got this season. Look for Ben Charrington to be the new GM and for the Sox to make a play for John Farrell. Ya, he's under contract but so is Theo and money talks.

I wrote this team off the day they hired Bobby V.The fascination with Pesky might be partially due to his being a career .307 batter even with losing 3 years of baseball to the Navy. Or it may be due to his over 60 years of service with the Red Sox. There is a lot to like about the guy.

Four current Red Sox players attended Johnny Pesky's funeral this week, according to the Boston Herald.
From the Herald:
Word from Yawkey Way is that the Sox front office hired buses to bring players, office and staff to the funeral from the ballpark to the church. The suits, we hear, were surprised and disappointed when the vast majority of the 40 players on the roster didn’t bother to show up for the services.
“We ordered the buses for the front office to go, knowing that any players could join us or drive separately from their homes,” Sox spokesman Charles Steinberg told the Track. “Between the ownership, front office, current players and staff, and former players, we were well represented by the people who knew Johnny best.”
The current players who attended the funeral were David Ortiz, Clay Buchholz, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Vicente Padilla.
The Herald says that most of the team showed up to Josh Beckett's annual Beckett Bowl and country music show at the Lucky Strike Lanes and the House of Blues.
"The front office was not happy," a source told the Herald.

Sigh, feels like deja vu, the Olde Town Team has reverted to their pre 2004 persona. Well, if you've been a fan as long as I have, you are accustomed to it.
A few thoughts:
How do you think Dan Douquette is feeling these days, (can you say vindicated?)
Will John Henry actually let Ben Charington do his job rebuilding the team or will he be forced again to march to Luchino's, (you know the guy who insisted on hiring Bobby V), drumbeat?
I could go on but sadly the only thing to say at this point is the old "wait till next year" (of course Belicheck & Company could help us forget sooner)

Mercifully it is almost over. Let me be the first to say goodbye to Bobby V. It was not all his fault, but I think it is inevitable. I hope Ben Charington has a good offseason (a good start would be to make a deal with Toronto and sign John Farrell ASAP). He needs to decide who is worth keeping and who has to go and then be decisive about his moves. Should be an interesting hot stove season

On the flip side when they were talking to John F. in game and he said well with the "neighborhood play" at second you just kind of accept it. He should look at the reply..the guy did not catch the ball :D
I am sure he did look at the replay.....he should have some class and admit the umps got it right.

John F. said over and over that everyone "accepts" the neighborhood play, but that's not what this was, it was clear he never had the ball to transfer. Even the replay showed the ump looking at the bag assuming he was going to make the catch so you have to forgive him for missing the call.
Also interesting what Joe Torre said, how the umps have a little signal if they see something they will start toward the ump in question to let him know they had a better or different view and then he will call them in, if no one moves the ump in question doesn't call for help, it's not that they just rarely call for help it's that most of the time the other umps have nothing definitive to add. I thought that was kind of enlightening.

Roughly speaking this is our view, Adam -- we actually moved over one section closer to home plate this year but I don't have a pic. The only downside is the beer vendors aren't allowed to sell in our section. Apparently the seats aren't expensive enough ...

Have to say I do miss going to games at Fenway, never forget my first game, scalped bleacher tickets to opening day in '87 and saw Rocket pitch, when he was still just an amazing enhanced pitcher.

WHY is salty in this ****ing game, he hasn't hit at all during the post season, he had a bonehead error in game 2 that cost huge, he's calling a shitty game in game 3 and you have Ross sitting on the bench who is hitting .350 .... wow Farrell FAIL.
AdamJoshua

2-1 on Nava ... ball 5 inches outside a called strike now 2-2 .. ball to make it 3-2 .. (should have been the walk) next pitch strike out. I think i've heard "Kelly gets away with one" about 5 times so far, these calls are fricking brutal.
TWO strikes in a row called balls to the sox pitchers, games like this aren't even fun to watch, it's only amusing when McCarver says "and there's a strike" as it's called a ball then he says it was a bit low, then they show the track and it's "no that was a good pitch that didn't get the call". Ok I'm done.

I never saw a more bonehead set of moves, you take out a guy who is hitting, you put in someone who hasn't hit ****, you move Xander from the position he's played all season and put middlebrooks at 3rd, your moves cost us Felix who was pitching great ball, Xander throws a bad one to first instead of drew being there, middlebrooks hasn't played in a month and a ball get's by him that is usually snagged, one bad move after enough and the entire time you leave that no hitting catcher in the game, who had an error that cost us last night and he has one that cost the game tonight, while on the bench you have Ross who's hitting .350 in teh post season... really just a bizarre string of moves, ****ing it looked like ME when I try play chess for christ sake.

Farrell is in over his head..interference could be called the other way it shows the guy pushing down on WMB?
AdamJoshua
10-26-2013, 10:36 PM
and yet what's it matter XB should have been at 3rd the entire time anyway, it's a opinion call, he thinks one of the slowest guys on the team with a bum ankle would have scored so that's that, if salty is catching again in this series, as a fan i will be severely let down, it's time to give Ross the due he's earned in the postseason.

Missed the ending, watching MLB.TV now, so do Red Sox fans think the call was wrong? I haven't seen enough to form an opinion.
AdamJoshua

It's a judgement call on the umps part whether or not Craig could have scored if he didn't push down on middlebrooks and then trip over him. It is interesting according to the rule once a player has missed a ball he is no longer in pursuit of it and if he is in the way it's interference, so basically if there is a play like that and you just trip or run into the guy, you are automatically safe at home no matter what, seems like originally it was to keep 3rd basemen from slowing down runners on purpose but they made it to where basically it doesn't matter what the instance is. That's the rule nothing you can do about it, you just rarely see it and it figures mr. Jim "sorry I suck and you don't get a perfect game" Joyce was the one to make the call, so now I guess he doesn't spend the night in Detroit OR Boston. lol
As I said I am more upset with the game that John Farrell 'played', so many bad moves in one game. I think that's the worst part, the one guy that should have not started or at least should have been replaced was the one left in the game to K badly a couple of times and throw the ball away at the end to cost the game.

Taking nothing away from the Cards they are playing great.
Bottom line for me is the ineptitude of the Sox manager, for the moves or lack of.
Saltalamacchia..makes two throws in two games that cost the team a chance to win?

The call was lousy if you are a Red Sox fan.
It was proper if a Cardinals fan.
As a fan of neither, I think it was a proper call.
As far as Farrell goes, come on guys. You weren't complaining when a first year manager took the team to the World Series. Why now?

As an unbiased observer (I hate both teams ;)) I think the call was the right one. Nobody's first move to get up when they're lying flat on their stomach is to kick their legs up in the air.
AdamJoshua
10-27-2013, 10:08 AM
I thought the call was the right one too, well "by the book" the only problem is they showed another angle of the play and craig was already tripping before he got to middlebrooks, put out his hand, pushed middlebrooks back down then tripped over him. Sooo while i didn't have a problem before I sort of have one now, not that it matters, the game is over and it's time to play the next one.

He didn't trip over his legs, if you watch the video and even the umpires said that.
He actually started going down before he got to middlebrooks in the video, then gimped his way down the line at a brisk walking pace that you see old people use in the mall, haha :)

Nobody's first move to get up when they're lying flat on their stomach is to kick their legs up in the air.
I think part of the issue was when he was pushing himself up Craig used his body to push off and that pushed him back down. He at least ump is making a name for himself, screwed a player out of a perfect game and then this in the world series, he should write a book :r

There's about 5 Irish pubs walking distance from my house. We were discussing last night which one we should check the game out at. There's one sports bar near by too, but it'll be packed with too many BC students; very few of which are from Red Sox Nation.

If you are in an Irish pub and it's subdued tonight you must have taken a wrong turn and ended up on another planet, I just can't imagine any place being even a little "normal" tonight.
