How about Colon last night? He actually looked pretty good from the few highlights I saw. A lot better then his last outing.
He looked a ton better. Maybe he is turning things around. You never know, he could get back to his 2005 status:D

Here's something I've never seen before.
7th inning...
MIN...Starting catcher ejected.
MIN...Head Coach ejected.
Next inning, a few minutes later...
BOS...Starting catcher ejected.
BOS...Head Coach ejected.

Nah, just that particular ump. Must have had a fight with his wife that morning. Everyone interviewed was mystified as to why he ejected everyone soo quickly. At least Varitek hit a couple homers before he got the boot. The MIN catcher was arguing a safe call at home, while Tek was arguing the strike zone to keep Beckett from starting in on the ump about it. In both cases, the ump tossed them after less than 10 seconds of talk.

I'm surprised that Tito hasn't exploded prior to this. He has the patience of a Saint with the starting pitchers. DiceK alone is enough to induce heart trouble in anyone.

Redmond had a very close play. It was his first ejection ever. I don't think he would have ever tried to argue if he didn't think he got the tag, he's better than that.
Yeah, I found out tonight that the ump was called up from the minors to fill in because a regular was out sick or something.
That ump is only about 32 years old. Aren't most umps somewhere around 45 to 50? That guy needs to stay umping in the minor league until he is old enough to not flip out and toss someone when someone gets in his face for 10 seconds, couldn't take it so toss them, meh.
LOL, at least whoever was in the sound booth missed the button when Beckett when off, I heard all the cuss words on the TV, I love that. But, I will say that Beckett did throw a strike and that ump was so very wrong.
I like my team but I don't like it when the opposing team gets terrible calls.
AND wtf is up with the O's, I see them actually winning a few games. :D

That ump is a temporary call up from Triple A and is being used as a fill in for another real umpire who is on leave right now. He is just more proof that for the past several years the younger umpires have been becoming more confrontational and are seeking out excuses to get into beefs with players and coaches. They seem to think that the game is about them. Redmond, first ejection, Varitek, only the fourth ejection in his long career and the first since 2005. Makes you think.

YUP!!
David Price (Rays) has a wicked fast ball (very respectfully) and Francisco Liriano should join that ump in triple A.
I was not impressed with Liriano last fall and not impressed with him this spring. I think he needs to go. He gives up one home run then falls apart. 47 pitches in the 3rd inning, sad, very sad.
It's funny, MN pitching last year was pretty good and batting suffered a little, this year it seems the opposite.
OH the intricate nuances of this game will have us all pulling our hair out.

Well, Tito finally shook up the Sox lineup and they scored some runs! Lester was terrific too, 12 K's. Unfortunately it was too late to get anything more than one win in the Jays series and the Evil Empire is in first place :(.
On to Motor City, (at least they used to make cars there), tomorrow to try to tame the Tigers.

DiceK survived 5 innings against the Tigers for his first win of the year. Sox bullpen was great as usual, though Papelbon has got to learn to bear down when not in a save situation.
Unfortunately the Evil Empire also won and they are still in first place. Sox will take care of that next week when they visit Friendly Fenway.

I'm still scratching my head over AJ Burnett's suspension. He gets six game for throwing at and missing the guy, before the benches were warned, while Padilla hit Tex twice and got nothing. I mean, Josh Beckett threw intentionally at Bobby Abreu's head after he called time and got less of a suspension. Seems overly harsh given the circumstances

Methinks Bob Watson is still sore over George firing him when he was the GM. The league always comes down hardest on the Yanks.
That being said, Beckett's play was a major douchebag move. Burnett's play was just old fashioned retaliation. No reason the punishment should be equal given the circumstances.

Julio Lugo must sit, he cost us a game last night again. Penny pitched a good game Lugo lets a ball go under his glove that let a run in we should have been out of the inning, next batter hits a three run shot.
Later in the game Lugo can't make routine a play to his left that cost a run.
Lugo is responsible for three of Penny loses this season I am surprised Penny hasn't given him a beating?
Tito caved in and played him this week after Lugo was crying to the media, I think whining won't do him any good now?

Great series with the Evil Empire, especially as my beloved Sox SWEPT 'EM.
In game three Penney and Sabathia both pitched great games, the only differences were: Big Papi's home run, (wow it feels great to type that) and the fact that the Yankees had to leave CC in for too long because of their lack of confidence in their bullpen. I expect the bullpen will ultimately be their demise this year.
Next up for the Sox ... the World Champion Phillies ... it doesn't get any easier!

The Yankees won tonight in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, Jeter on 2nd Teixeira on 1st and A-Rod up. A-Rod hits a pop up to shallow right/center for the 2nd baseman. Both Jeter & Teixeira are running full out for what should have been the final out of the game when all of a sudden the popup pops out of his glove and falls to the ground with the running crossing home plate with out a throw home. Yankees Win 9-7.

Sox take 2 of 3 from Phillies. Still in first by 2 games:ss. Beckett had a bad day Sunday, but I guess they can't all be good ones. The team looks very tired right now.
Next up after a much needed day off; the Marlins. Media is projecting John Smoltz will start against them on Thursday. The big question for the Sox is: who goes to make room for Smoltz, both on the team and in the rotation? Gee .... I wonder if Dice-K hurt his arm/shoulder/wrist/earlobe in his rain delayed 4 inning stint on Saturday?

Hey, don't hate on him too much. He was over-tired coming in to the season. He worked too much in the WBC. Give him a couple weeks off and I think you'll see him return to something closer to last year's form. They can spare him easily, with Smoltz starting back from surgery and Buckholtz and Masterson both able to start if needed.
I find it interesting how long Sox fans will hold on to the slightest glimmer of hope that Papi is not done, but they start turning on Matsuzaka the moment he shows any weakness. He was our best pitcher last year.

... I find it interesting how long Sox fans will hold on to the slightest glimmer of hope that Papi is not done, but they start turning on Matsuzaka the moment he shows any weakness. He was our best pitcher last year.
Well he had a lot of wins, that does not necessarily make him the best pitcher. He rarely got out of the sixth inning and had the most run support of any Sox pitcher. I admit to being one of Papi's fans who don't want to give up on him and your'e right, I'm almost eager to throw Dice-K under the bus.
Why? I think it's a combination of the fact that it is really hard to dislike Ortiz and it's really hard to watch Dice-K pitch.
Papi is a genuine big kid playing a game he loves and you can't help but root for him. At one point during his slump he was very frustrated and did not want to talk to the media. He simply said to them "Just put down that Papi stinks". Hard to picture many other major leaguers saying that. We also remember all his contributions to the series wins in 04 and 07. As for Matsuzaka, he fiddles and diddles and nibbles the corners and never seems to bear down and challenge a hitter until a couple of guys are on base. He seems to shake off Variteck more than he listens to him and is downright stubborn in his approach to pitching. Sometimes it is downright excruciating to watch. Finally, he seems downright distant to the average fan. Yea, I know there is a big language and cultural gulf there, but that doesn't change this fans' perceptions.
PeteSB75
06-15-2009, 11:41 AM
I'm not trying to start an argument or put you on the defensive. I am a Boston fan myself. I was just pointing out the difference in fan treatment of the two.
In Ortiz's case, he has obviously been frustrated and pushing for most of this season. He's had a few homers and a few hits, but he's not close even to his form of last year, which was down quite a bit from the year before. I would let him rest for a week or two and maybe play a week or two at the farm teams before bringing him back up and seeing where he stands. He's the DH, with no contribution to the team but his hitting, which is just not doing it. He'll get some rest anyway over the next few weeks with inter-league play, but I would put Lowell in the DH spot and get another bat in there.
In Daisuke's case, between the language issue and the fact that no-one in the US media or fan base bothers to even try to spell his name, can you blame him for being distant? I guess I don't have a problem with him being stubborn and shaking off Varitek. Tek is good, but he's obviously not always on the same wavelength as Masuzaka. He's also struggled this year, mostly due to overwork during the WBC. I'd let him rest on the DL for a bit. With Smoltz back from surgery shortly and Buchholz and Masterson both waiting in the wings and able to start, they can definitely spare him.
It's a long season, and a few weeks off won't hurt either guy when they need him to perform at his peak, in September and October, not June.

Ortiz has also been hitting about .320 over the last 10 games, (9 hits in his last 28 at bats) so I think this discussion would have more meaning a week or two ago, but still. I think he would have gotten back to good form sooner had he had time on the bench sooner. Francona only sat him for what, 3 games?

He is pitching lights out in AAA and wants another shot at the majors. I really can't blame him for that.
As the trading deadline approaches it will be interesting to see what the Sox will do. They obviously have a surplus of pitchers, (which most everyone needs) and just as obviously need a big bat at DH, (assuming Big Papi continues his decline). I would not be surprised to see Brad Penney traded for a hitter, DiceK sent to the bullpen and Buchholz promoted ... all just before the trading deadline.

You're right, neither the Sox nor Yankees games should have been played last night. I believe though that the decision to play or not is in the umpire's hands. Not to say that they as representatives of MLB are not just as greedy.

Mike Lowell was not to happy in the interview on NESN. plus they lost the game :(The decision of whether or not to start the game is in the hands of the home team ownership (John Henry, Hank Werner). Once the game is started, continuance of the game or stoppage is up to the umpires. In this case, I feel that Red Sox ownership screwed up and the game should never have been started. He can play first base, third base, left, and right field. Useful for when Tex wants to DH, A-Rod needs a day off, pinch hitting, Melky/Swisher get cold, or Damons knees get sore. I think it's actually a pretty good trade, we gave up nothing really and Hinske does have a little power in his bat.

I dunno, the Yankees haven't gotten much out of Wang and he's hurt again. Chamberlain hasn't been great as of late and they want to keep Hughes in the pen, so there really isn't anyone to fill the gap. They might make a move for him. I could see the Red Sox willing to pony up a nice offer as well as Smoltz is quite the question mark in their rotation. The Mets I doubt could offer anything worthwhile for him.

Lets put it this way......Kenny Williams(GM for the Sox) has said that they(himself and the Jays) have talked together about getting Doc. To get him we would need to give up 3 mlb players right now. John Danks, Gavin Floyd and A. Ram. And possibly toss in our #1 rated prospect Gordon Beckham. Would it be worth it for one pitcher? Maybe. But down the road I believe Gordon Beckham will be an allstar. John Danks and Floyd are part of our starting rotation. So from the point of a Sox fan, I think it is safe to say that we will not end up with him, but whoever does, will being giving up a LOT to get Doc.

So the Sox don't want Doc, the Mets don't want Doc - guess that only leaves my Yanks. Anybody want to but a lightly-used stadium. refurbished in the mid-70s? If the Big Dig is finally done, shouldn't be a problem hauling it to Yawkey Way.

I highly doubt the Jays would trade him in the Division...maybe not even the AL.

Good news indeed. Gonna be back and forth the whole way out I think, we're in for some good baseball the second half (as long as everyone stays healthy!).

The AL East will go down to the last day of the season batteling for the Division and/or Wild Card. Either way they will both be in the Postseason and hopefully meet in the ALCS. Baseball needs the Yankees/Red Sox playing each other in the postseason. Those two teams equal big ratings.

Sox made some moves. LaRoche from Pittsburgh and Duncan from St Louis. Shoring up the bench I guess, neither strikes me as much of an impact player.

No doubt. But neither move makes much sense to me. LaRoche isn't all that great a hitter and can only play first base. Which Kotsay was doing just fine when he needed to. And Duncan they just sent down to the minors

The LaRoche move seems to be a just in case move which cost them nothing and the Lugo for Duncan move was just to get rid of Lugo who they have been shopping all year.

I am pleased, but not shocked. Aside from that blip in Anaheim they have been playing great ball for a month now. As for the Sox, I am shocked they've lost 5 of 6, but it's way too early to be pleased. It is late July, not September.

Yeah...with Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, Putz, and Maine all the DL we have been getting hammered. Reyes, Delgado & Beltran were supposed to be back afte the All Star game...that was 18 games ago??? Being 10.5 games down does not look good right now...especially with these guys all eeding rehabd assignments before coming back. My fear is that we are too far down to crawl back up. And the minor league system doesn't have enough to keep us afloat. Being a die hard Mets and with the current payroll...I DON"T WANT TO HEAR EXCUSES from Minaya. I want some butts!!

Brian Anderson has never lived up to his potential. What the hell are the Sox gonna do with him? At least with Kotsay, you had a reliable bat and the veteran presence....with Anderson, you get a unproven, .240 hitter with some speed.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Chicago White Sox ace Mark Buehrle has set a major league record by retiring 45 straight batters.
Coming off a perfect game in his last start against Tampa Bay, Buehrle retired the first 17 Minnesota Twins batters to surpass the record of 41 straight set by and San Francisco's Jim Barr in 1972 and tied by teammate Bobby Jenks, a reliever, in 2007.
