Looks like the Cubbies have a little something to cheer about. Carlos Pena will be a northsider next season.
The Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent first baseman Carlos Pena, the team announced.
The deal is for $10 million, according to a source.
Pena had a star-crossed season in 2010, hitting 28 home runs with 84 RBIs but hitting a career-low .196 and striking out 158 times in 484 at-bats.

It may sound like a crap excuse, but I blame it on the DH spot. He's used to playing the field (no matter how bad), so he comes into the game once every hour or so cold just to hit. He's always been K heavy, but he's never had this bad of an average until he assumed the DH role.

I totally agree. I really don't have any idea of how he can break out of it though. Paul is our first base. Dunn will not start first, so I really just don't know anymore with done. Sox in general too.

As in his "boy" Francona? This smells more and more like a set-up to me. Francona leaves first "via mutual agreement", then Epstein leaves the next week. Then Quade gets canned after only one year of experience with a bad team who has too many back-loaded contracts, bad attitudes, washed-up never was players, and only a handful of future stars/legitimate stars.

I call it both really, cell or old comiskey. Burls was a move I didn't like to see, but we had to do it. We still have a solid pitching rotation. One thing needed is a closer. I think the biggest factor for the Sox to have a good year is Dunn, Beckham and Rios having bounce back years. We have drastically improved our farm system thus far though, so we do have a pretty bright future.

For sure. He was so damn bad last year. I hope his talents in the NL return to him next year. I wouldn't bet on it though.. He may never "get" what a DH is.
You can stick a fork in him b/c he's Dunn.
I know, bad pun.;s
Even though he's not a Red anymore, I still hope the best for him and that he at least gets one more big year, but it looks like he's done.

Yeah, I hope for the best, but expecting the worst at this point. When people say he had a bad year, it really was bad ALL year. Every single at bat was just awful(save a few hr's he had).

Cubs are also showing interest in Yoenis Cespedes.. He would really help the Cubs.. Castro and Cespedes is a decent gamble for future building blocks..
Good to see they are looking to build for the future. I know that Epstein can't turn it around the first year he's in there, but the guy has already made some good moves. Dumping Zambrano was my favorite so far!!!

Big Z was not a very good team player. However, I think he was a little bitter for not doing well in the previous playoff years. No excuse though. He is a very good starter though. It wouldn't shock me to see him put up big time numbers this year. That or Ozzie will kill 'em before opening day:r

Why did they bring in Camp, Sean, did Garza walk a couple in the 9th?
Not sure why. Here's the play by play...
Guess they wanted to play a match up on Kottaras. Either way, a "W" for the good guys.
Top 9th: Milwaukee - N. Morgan grounded out to shortstop - R. Braun struck out swinging - N. Aoki safe at first on pitcher M. Garza's throwing error, N. Aoki to second - G. Kottaras hit for T. Dillard - S. Camp relieved M. Garza - G. Kottaras grounded out to shortstop

ATLANTA -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol will no longer close games, manager Dale Sveum announced on Sunday.
Japanese import Kyuji Fujikawa will take over the role.
"I came into the season with the mindset of a set-up man," Fujikawa said through his interpreter. "Once Marmol's condition gets better I think there is a chance he'll come back. We all have to fight through it."
Marmol lost his job after giving up game tying and winning home runs to B.J. Upton and Justin Upton in the ninth inning on Saturday.
It was his third appearance of the young season in which he gave up runs; his ERA is 27.00.
It made the decision an easy one for Sveum and the front office.
"We've had three games that have been winnable games this year and all three have been an adventure," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "So the decision was fairly easy."

"(CNN) -- A dreaded curse that has nagged Chicago's Wrigley Field for decades may have triggered a grotesque prank Wednesday, when an unidentified man in an unmarked truck dropped off a package containing a severed goat's head at the stadium.
The gruesome parcel was addressed to the club's owner, Tom Ricketts, CNN affiliate WBBM reported. While the delivery -- confirmed by the Cubs and caught on surveillance footage -- was certainly offensive, it's nothing new.

Oh I'm sure it is, last I heard the city gave it's approval to his renovation plans since it would not utilize taxpayer money. It's those folks that own the rooftop seats that are at odds with him now. They have hinted at a lawsuit if the new video board he has planned obstructs their viewpoint in any way. I've also heard that someone in Schaumburg has offered him free land if he does move the team out of Wrigley.
I took a class called "Baseball and American Culture" last year and Pete Ricketts was one of our guest speakers, he indicated that with all the improvements needed in the ballpark they couldn't afford any big name free agents just yet.
