View Full Version : Would you try human flesh?

lightning9191

This question popped into my head yesterday and I've been asking people, so I figured I'd put it up here:

Let's say you were in a foreign country where the local culture enjoyed dining on human flesh. The people aren't killed for their flesh. After people die, the culture prefers to eat their dead as opposed to burying them....they see that as wasteful. So now that you've decided to visit this tropical paradise (or wherever), would you try human flesh while you were there?

Depends on what they die from.:r

I've heard of it used as a way to honour someone and keep them a part of you.

Wow... this forum just took a turn for the odd. :D

But in all seriousness, it would depend on what they died from and the cooking method.

If it was a survival situation and someone in my party died and I had the means to cook them in order to live. Yes.

If I was out would I order a double quarter pounder with human meat, hold the mustard. No.

Well, if you do, stay away from the brains. Cannibal cultures develop a lot of diseases from eating brains--perhaps this is why humans have a natural aversion to eating their own?

I doubt I'd be able to eat anyone close to me, even in a survival situation. If it was just some random ock who happened to be with us when we got snowed in, sure, I doubt I'd have much hesitation there.

Two good cannibal movies: Alive, Ravenous. There's also another film about the rugby players called Stranded: I've Come From a Plane That Crashed in the Mountains. That's more of a documentary I believe.

I can't imagine an ancient elder would taste all that good though, probably very sinewy.

I take hypotheticals pretty seriously...anyone remember my mad rich guy with a tiger question? :)

taltos
02-26-2009, 01:09 PM
Andy, Alive was based upon the book of the same name about the rugby players who crashed in the Andes Mountains. Stranded was a later movie about the same thing andwas somewhat of a ripoff of Alive. There were a couple more that I can't think of. I intentionally selected a meat donor who may not have a brain.

That wasnt the question though D... the question was if we were visiting somewhere where it was part of thier culture to eat thier dead.

If im stuck on a downed plane in the middle of the Andes, then pass the plate :tu

I have a whole list of things that ours and other cultures eat routinely that I would not touch - this just makes the list longer -

So umm - no.

If it involves me staying alive then reluctantly I'd probably eat. If it was about another countrys culture ( where might this be in case I mistakenly travel there ) I'd say I would not partake of eating of the dead. Conversely if she were to be a Playboy Bunny and were very much alive and I,,,,,nevermind, this just got weird.

Scott, you appear to be the first person to admit that you'd try it (which I find interesting...you'd think there is a stigma or something:r). I'm in the yes column as well. Of course that is easy to say without a plate of it in front of me. As long as the person wasn't killed/raised for food, I don't see a problem. I wouldn't eat the brains or any major nerve centers though (I don't want kuru or any other prion).

I just don't have a problem with it. I'll try anything once. I blame it on my grandmother. She used to make me eat all sorts of gross sh!t when I was a little kid, told me I should keep my mind open, avoid "comtempt prior to investigation".
I even ate liver and onions when I was a kid and actually liked it. I like pickled heart and pig's feet, or at least I used to.

It's red meat. If we're eating said person in the tropics, it's likely to be very lean. Odds are I won't like it because I like well-marbled meat. It'd be too dry for me.
But I can't see why I wouldn't try it. I've tried a lot worse than a slab of red meat. Sweet Potatoes, for instance. :pu

No, I wouldn't, mostly because it's people, and partially because old tough cows and chickens make horrible eating, and if it died of disease you shouldn't eat it, and if it died due to war or road-kill what the heck are you doing in such a dangerous place? :p

Buoys "Timothy"

Trapped in a mine what had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim

When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Was Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know

Hungry as hell, no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, I'll take a swig
And then there's some for you

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do

I must have blacked out just 'round then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again

My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around to finding Timothy
