Default Microsoft update help

HELP! Can't seem to update- get this message:

[Error number: 0x800A01CE]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I've looked all around the 'net, and tried a bunch of things, to no avail. I don't want to make matters worse, but what appears to be the problem are missing update files/ active-x controls for updates.

MuWebControl and VuWebControl.

Thanks for any help!

Default Re: Microsoft update help

XP, IE8, SP3 not sure when it started exactly, I tried to update when my Secunia indicated that my IE and Windows needed to be patched.(I do have auto-updating.) So, I went to the update pages, and just when it was supposed to start the download I got the message above. I googled the message, and the error number, and fiddled around a bit, but, again, didn't want to get carried away. I did notice many of the solutions were from 2005 and thereabouts, SP2, so maybe not pertinent to my problem.

Should I simply re-install IE8?

I doubt this is a problem with IE8. Can you confirm that computer has an internet connection? Are you on the forums on that computer now?

Have you recently installed any new software? Might also be a good time to clean out temporary internet files and/or cookies and give it another shot.

Found this:

Right click My Computer and choose Manage. Now click the plus sign next
to Services. Double click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
It must be set to Manual or Automatic to successfully do Windows
Updates. If it's set to Disabled under Service status then click the
drop down window and set it to Manual. Click Apply, then OK.

IF BITS was already set to Manual or Automatic, then see if resintalling
Windows Script resolves the issue :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d…

Download and save scripten.exe. Close IE and then install it.

You may have some malware.

Is it only a problem getting to MS updates?

Try going to other sites like mcafee.com or housecall.trendmicro.com

Until we know the why...the fix can't be told.

(if it is not a bug and you want to remove IE...you can always remove it completely and reinstall form the OS)

Stop your automatic updates service.

Rename "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataSto re.edb" to "DataStore.old"

Start automatic updates service

Go to windowsupdate and try it again.

*********

Also check registry to make sure you are not disabling Windows Update access.

Here's a link to see what I mean: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/441/

I've seen the update service throw an error when there's a critical update that has to be installed by itself. Sometimes you can get around it by loading the update site and doing the critical updates manually.

Don't install it. Check your registry for windowsupdatedisable or another string that is restricting windows update. That article is to show you where to look.

Not finding "windowsupdatedisable" in registry. All I find in registry under windows update is (Default) REG_SZ (value not set.)

You might not find that exact value. There are a few values that can prevent Windows Update from running.

What are your values in "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpd ate"

I have seen this issue at work, it's either the Store or a Registry value preventing the Updates from displaying.

No "Current Version" folder: under Microsoft

HKLM\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects is string
