Going to NYC - recommendations?

Hey all -

Going to be travelling to NYC in a couple weeks.

Where would be a good place to go and check out a nice smoke shop/have a cigar? Never been down that way.

Is the pricing much different from a B&M down there to what you can expect online?

Merchant's Cigar Bar - 1125 1st Avenue, in the shadow of the 59th Street Bridge

Club Macanudo - 26 East 63rd Street, upscale, no jeans or sneakers

Nat Sherman Townhouse - 12 East 42nd Street

I'm sure others can cite you more.

Pricing might be somewhat higher than what you are used to, due to local taxes.

P.S. - Keep in mind that, thanks to Reichsmarschall Bloomberg, anti-smoking laws make it illegal for you to enjoy a cigar outside, even in the middle of Central Park a hundred yards from the nearest East Side doyenne or West Side yuppie. This is so they might better appreciate the healthy fragrance of noxious fumes from buses, trucks, and taxis.

However, Paley Park is a private pocket park at 3 East 53rd Street, and because it is "private" it is not subject to the city's draconian policies. It is open to the public, and welcomes smokers to partake at their pleasure. So don't say CBS never did anything for you.

As for the legal issue, it is the same. As for price, there are hefty taxes imposed, so much so that many smokers go to the trouble and expense to travel elsewhere (like NJ, where they still ain't cheap) just to save about 2 bucks extra per pack, or more.

I enjoyed Nat Sherman's when I went for a week in June. Spent about three afternoons in there and they have a good selection of cigars. Hang with the locals and you can join in complaining about taxes, cost of living, traffic, etc. all the normal stuff plus sports and politics. I love New Yorkers, can talk about anything pretty much.

I've always thought that De La Concha on 6th I think is great. A little pricey but it is NYC. Its up between 57th and 58th. Cool place but their humidors are just to ogle unless your filthy rich.

Stock your humidor and order a bunch online and have them shipped to where you are staying. Online prices are typically better than B&M. That said... Still support the local B&M's. They often have things that are not convenient to get from online sources. Also, can enjoy hanging out at B&M in a/c and have a few good sticks with favorite beverages! Well worth the price paid! Have a good time!

Park Avenue Liquours - not for the cigars, but for the selection of whiskey and cognac.
Incredible store.

Then drop by Per Se at Time Warner square (about a block away) for lunch and blow your kids inheritance!

While in NYC a couple of weeks ago I bench marked these two place in preparation of opening my own. Worth a visit for sure. Cigar Inn carries no booze but a liquor store is two doors away.

I am going to place an order online and have it delivered to my hotel - I am sure the prices are not as ludicrous as they are in Canada though

a $5 cigar in down South of the border will cost $15-$20 here.

Enjoy a cigar at The Carnegie Club - 156 W 56th St between 6th and 7th Ave.

Want a uniquely New York experience? Go to The Carnegie Club on a Saturday night. At 8:30 and again at 10:30, a singer named Steven Maglio, backed by an 11-piece orchestra, does Sinatra covers. How "New York" is that?

NOTE: There is a dress code. A suit would be appropriate, but perhaps not necessary. I would not try to walk in wearing jeans and sneakers. There is a $40 per person cover charge for the show and a two-drink minimum. If you bring your own cigars, there's a $10 cutting fee. If you buy their cigars, be prepared to pay a lot for them. They accept reservations.

Want to really go all-out? One of Sinatra's favorite restaurants is two blocks away from The Carnegie Club. It's called Patsy's Italian Restaurant - 236 W 56th St between Broadway & 8th Ave. Why not have dinner at Patsy's, then hit the show.

It won't be an inexpensive night out. But I bet it'll be a night you won't soon forget.

OK cigar in soho isn't a huge shop but had a nice selection. It's also walking distance to Circa Tabac if you want to enjoy a nice cocktail and smoke inside. Circa is always fun.

Also, Martinez near Penn Station is a nice low key spot. great cigars rolled on site and great guys to have a beer and stick with.

Edit: The Nat Sherman store on 42nd was nice but I didnt hang out to smoke. Nice enough staff adn decent selection but solid NYC pricing.

Thanks for the suggestions all - I was a block away from Nat Shermans - Great place and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Picked up a few sticks and the guys there were very informative. Good selection as well.

... Now w/ NYC - holy piss that City is busy, on top of no trees etc unless you go to the park.... No thanks! Great place to visit and glad I did - but never could live there.

It is certainly a place that needs to be experienced to be believed.
