Default Oliva Masterblend 3 torpedo

Regular readers of my reviews know that I love Oliva cigars and that I reviewed two Master blends, before, the Master blend 1 torpedo and the Master blend 3 robusto. Now I had the opportunity to smoke and review the 6x52 Oliva Master blend 3 torpedo. The Master blend cigars are limited released with Nicaraguan ligero filler, a Nicaraguan Habano binder and a broadleaf Sun Grown wrapper.

This cigar is extremely box pressed, it's oval shaped. The wrapper is dark and oily but with spots. The cigar has a smell of straw, a sharp point and a beautiful band. The construction feels good. The mild peppery predraw is good.

I taste a mild sour coffee flavor, the sour flavor reminds me of citrus, but it fades away quickly. I also taste some chocolate which slowly grows in strength with coffee as a background flavor.

After a third I taste wood, herbs and chocolate. The herbs flavor morphs to spices and pepper. The wood flavor becomes stronger and the chocolate is still around.

This cigar lasted me for an hour and twentyfive minutes. I got a reasonable amount of thick smoke. The draw is good. The burn is ok, a little bit crooked though. The ash is medium gray, frayed and firm. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied. I got a decent flame when I purged the cigar.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, I liked it.

Appearance: 7 / 10
Construction: 8 / 10
Draw: 8 / 10
Burn: 7 / 10
Smoke & ash: 8 / 10
Aroma first part: 8 / 10
Aroma second part: 8 / 10
Aroma third part: 8 / 10

Nice review. I picked one of these up in a pass on another forum. I found it very tasty but did not like the box-press. I had trouble getting a consistent draw through the first half, then the press seemed to loosen up enough.

Thanks Ferdie, I'm looking to try some of these now. When did they stop without the lazer etching on them?

after the MB2. I recently had a sit down with José Oliva and asked him about this. It turns out that lasering the cigars causes a 15% fall out of cigars, cigars that have been rolled, passed quality control, were aged and were perfectly good but then were destroyed by the laser. Due to a slightly difference in moisture and wrapper thickness not all tattoos turned out the same.

I am definitely not agreeing with this review. MB III's are the worst of all the Olivas, send them to me for disposal.

Please, who you trying to kid. I'm not the one whining about customs to get a bombing run called off. But not to worry, we think we have a back door into the the Dutch land that does not involve customs. More to follow.

that is not about getting a bombing run called off. I will scan the letter and email it to you (you know your way around google translate) so you see that it's no BS.

I was just able to pick up a box of Masters Blend I Robustos recently. I really look forward to comparing I to III but for now they need to rest from the journey.
