Default First Project

I decided to do something with all the cigar bands that I've accumulated over the past year of smoking. At first, I was going to try to cover my traveldor, but when a fellow service member overseas required something to put her cigars in, I donated the traveldor and now I'm covering my 20 count desk top. The only glue I had in the house was some tacky glue my wife uses for her scrap booking and ribbon making. I thought it would be fine to use but it doesn't dry exactly clear and makes the bands look old and faded. Here is a picture of what I did before deciding to ask you guys for advice.

What kind of glue or sealer do you guys use when covering things with cigar bands?

I think that actually is a cool idea bro!

I just did a clock and posted my picture in the thread of thebayratt who originally gave me the idea ..... Check it out to maybe give you an idea of how these bands look when they are staggered and overlapping. (scroll to bottom of thread to see the one I did)

http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=47542

Once thing though is your glue.... if you use a standard glue that is not acid free and apply it to paper bands like these they turn yellow and look horrible over time.

Plus I would make the all run horizontal .... seems like when they all run that way and overlap they look real nice.

I do love the idea though!!!

A very kind BOTL on here sent me a large envelope of his old cigar bands and I have a lot left.... I will be watching to see how yours turns out and I may order a cheap 25-5- count box to do one of these myself.

Can't wait to see the progress.

That clock looks awesome. I think i'm going to try to play tetris with this one and see how it turns out. I'm hoping that since they are all going to be 90 degrees from one another I will achieve the same kind of look. if it turns out horrible, i can always do another one. I've got a couple of things lying around that are just screaming to be covered with cigar bands.

I'm liking where it's going Earl, I tried this with superglue and ended up messing up the corner of my humi and gluing my fingers together, it was BAD lol. Good luck to ya. I am going to try again eventually, just not sure is gluesticks would work on wood.

Archival glue is the glue to use. Its acid free and won't yellow over time.

On the clear coat... ya got me. I tried using a spray type and probably used too much too fast. A few bands actually got "messed up" by it. The others weren't effected at all...
I would do some trial and error on a few bands on some wood glued down, then try out different types of clear coat and different ways of applying it to see which works best.

Yep that's why I used from your suggestion Shawn.... It was like $7 at Michaels.

On the package it says Paper Glue .... then you read more and its for archival and will say Acid Free on the front.

ok, I haven't been called into work yet today so I figured I'd get as much work done on this thing as possible before they called. Guess I had more time than I thought, I finished the top. It doesn't look as good as I thought it would but its not bad for my first try.
