Default For The Love of Port!

I do enjoy drinking premium craft beers and wonderful single malt whisky when I smoke a good cigar. But there is another drink that has a long heritage with cigar smoking and that is Port.

The complexities of Port are on the same caliber as a great cigar or single malt. I am curious which of my BOTL enjoy a good port, whether it be a Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, Ruby, or the highly sought Vintage Ports.

Currently I am enjoying a Graham's 20 Year Old Tawny and is fantastic as well as a Taylor's 2003 Late Bottled Vintage Port.

I have recently stumbled upon a great website. For The Love of Port was founded by Roy Hersh and has an incredible amount of info if you want to learn more about this wonderful beverage.

Let me know what Ports you are enjoying and what cigars you are pairing with them!

Bill

I do like port from time to time. I havent gone crazy with it yet. Ive had a few from Fonseca and Sandeman. If im smoking i like tawny over the ruby. Ruby can be a little sweet.

The Taylor's 20 YO Tawny is incredible. I want to try the 40 too!

Have you noticed any particular cigars go better with Port than others?

Yalumba has some pretty good tawny that not many are familiar with.. probably because it's Australian and not Portuguese and so being that parallels "scotch" coming from Japan... (hopefully you get my point). However, pairing their Antique Tawny with say a Camacho Corojo Churchill (or even Cetros) is pretty nice when I'm not drinking single malt scotch or beer. Also pairs well with LFDs and My Fathers.

I first started drinking Yalumba with their Clocktower and Galway Pipe releases back in the 90s and early 2000s. If you find them.. highly recommend.

I also drink Taylor Fladgate, Graham's and Sandeman and they pair well too. Though of these I think the 20 year old Taylor Fladgate is best for me. My wife likes Six Grapes and well.. it's pretty good but I'll go back to Yalumba in a heartbeat.

Also.. I'm not talking bad about Japanese Whisky above.. Yamazaki 18 is not too bad at all... It's actually very nice.

I dig a good Port with a cigar. First time I tried it (before the smoking ban in Illinois) was at a bartender's recommendation. It was an inexpensive one, Fonseca Bin 27, and it paired perfectly with a Cuban Bolivar.

I've had the opportunity to have some good vintage Ports since then, and love the way they pair with a good cigar.

The Fonseca Bin 27 is my go to port. I have a hard time opening a bottle and not finishing it. Seems wrong to leave a partial bottle of port. Hazlitt from the NY Finger Lakes also makes a very good port but it is harder to get where I am.

Haven't had a lot of ports, but I had a Taylor Fladgate 20 Yr Tawny Porto recently, and it was phenomenal. I'm also a fan of Madeiras, though it's hard to find a decent one. A local winery (V. Sattui) in Napa has a pretty good Madeira, any know of any other ones?

The first few ports I've had were pretty sweet so I never got into them. I was at my B&M a couple weeks ago and figured I would take another shot at port after reading a couple threads on forums and really enjoyed the Grahams 10 yr. I usually drink a good beer with cigars, but now I almost prefer the port.

I like vintage port. Fortunately, I bought quite a few cases many years ago before it became popular and the prices were low. I recently had a 1963 Croft and a 1963 Warre's. I do not smoke cigars when I drink Vintage Port. I prefer bourbon with my cigar.

Thanks Gents, I'm glad I found this thread. A dear friend of mine, the dude who introduced me to this forum recently informed me they enjoyed cigars with port on the Titanic. Well that ship sank a 100 years ago today. Tomorrow after the Tornadoes have passed we'll light up with port. Discuss the Titanic and the joys of all things maritime.

Whatever happened to Toasterhead? He bombed me with a local from Colorado last year: Winter Park American Port. http://www.winterparkwinery.com/OurWines.aspx I don't currently drink, but others that do, said it was tremendous.
