the miter edges dont come together fully on one corner. should i be concerned the humidor will leak or will it be ok as long as the lid is closed?

Welcome to the Asylum, please take a moment to introduce yourself here, http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=7.

To check for a leak lift the top about three inches and let it drop. If it slams shut with a bang then there is a leak. It should close with a "whoosh" if the seal is good.

Check the stickies for how to season your humidor.

def already tried the drop test

it makes a whoosh!

just wanted to make sure when it sits closed it wont slowly leak.

not even sure if thats possible with the lid being closed and the miter edges so close even though they aren't touching

In addition to what Bob posted, I would suggest that there's only one way to find out but sounds good.

Welcome to CA.

Assuming it doesn't have a glass top, turn on a flashlight, drop the light in and close the lid. In a dark room you shouldn't be able to see any light around the seal (or anywhere else for that matter).

While not seeing any light doesn't guarantee you won't have some leakage, if you do see light, ya got problems.

He means to try it out and see if it holds.

Welcome to the Asylum. And I have 2 humidors that do that, and they hold fine, so no worries. You should be okay as long as you are getting the whoosh.

I had the exact same thought reading the thread title.

Mass-produced humidors are hit or miss on how well they hold humidity, and while there are some tests you can do like the lid drop or the paper test or the flashlight, the real test is actually seasoning it, putting in humidification media, and seeing how well it works in the long run. Give it a shot. A good tip to keep in mind is that a tupperware container works perfectly as a humidor, so if you start to see problems with the humidor holding humidity, get your sticks in a tupperware immediately while you try to fix the problem or replace the humidor.

That looks familiar...

Recieved a Thompson Cherrywood Classic humidor for Christmas from my folks. Couldn't get the damn thing to maintain RH above 61%.

What I ended up doing as a test was taking red colored Duck Duct Tape and putting it along the bottom edge of the baffle and on the inside of the corners. Within 8 hours it was keeping an RH of around 68%, highest it's been since seasoning.

I've read about using super-thin Spanish Cedar strips wedged into the corners and using a precision tool (i.e., medical syringe) to fill the gap around the cedar. I'm planning on testing this method out in the coming days. Everyone seems to have a favored method of fixing a humidor seal such as Clear Aquarium Sealant (food grade silicone) or building up masking tape on the baffle (which only seems to work on rising baffles [on the bottom of the humidor body] rather than a sinking baffle [one attached to the lid like we have on our humidors]).

Fiddle around with a few rolls of tape and a few tubes of sealant and you'll most likely get the results you're looking for... At least I hope so!
