Default FedEx problem BIG one

I just bought a laptop online to replace the one I had, and it was delivered this morning. Or so I thought. The FedEx guy put the box on my desk up front like he always does, and came back to my office so I could sign for it. I was on the phone so I signed it, and off he went. I got to a point where I could pick it up, and the box was EMPTY. Nothing in it at all except the cardboard and styrofoam packing material. Am I now screwed because I signed for it without inspecting it?

Check the Fedex website and punch in your tracking number. There should be a weight listed.

Also, contact the company from which you purchased it to notify them that nothing was in the box.

I called them, and they are going to call me back. I called FedEx they are going to pick up the box on monday.

My big problem in all this, is that the computer I am typing on is sold and has to be shipped out today. That leaves me without a computer until this mess is sorted out, and it is not something I can do without. I guess I am on my way to buy another one.

I think I may have an old one somewhere I can use if I can remember who has it.

Here is what FedEx told me. It is normal for a box to come to you empty when it came open one of the shipping facilities. They have started a trace for it, and that will take 48 hours. From what they are telling me it is still at one of the facilities they just have to find it. I still have my fingers crossed. They did tell me it did weigh 10 pounds when they got it, so it has to be there somewhere.

Believe it or not, as tight as security is at FedEx/UPS Hubs, theft is still a major concern.
It would not surprise me if they did not produce your computer after a search in the hubs of travel. They are, however, still on the hook for this.

It took me almost 6 months to break up a theft ring at a UPS hub that I worked at after similar reports regarding cell phones. It took some time to put the pieces together and figure out that all of the missing phones went through my dock, but after that a lil quality time with a video camera was all it took.

Be patient and be firm. All will be made well.

I personally wouldn't want one that 'just came out of the package' and was recovered..... nothing should be on those belts that isn't inside of a box.... not a computer friendly environment.
If they find it, ask that they send it back and replace it with new. The chance for hidden damage is too great.

If I had felt it I would not have signed for it. I have done this a number of times in the past. I guess I will never do it again.

FedEx picked up the box this morning. The driver said they are having some security issues. I guess I will have to wait and see. He did say that more than likely they will find in my favor.

FedEx denied the claim, so I guess I am SOL. It wouldn’t have mattered if they did pay the claim he only declared it at $5

If nothing else I paid my stupid tax on this one.

They're just like any other insurer. They always deny first, ask questions later. I had issues with them on a Eday purchase and they denied. After some discussions, PP reimbursed me, but the seller got scrued.

Sorry to hear.
Denial isn't always the first route for package carriers.
The shipper declaring $5 value and recipient filing a claim for a lost laptop sure would throw a flag though.
Not trying to be a jackass, just shedding some light on the thought processes involved.
I know it may be a PITA, but try to make a few more calls and see if you can escalate it any if you haven't already.
