Default Memorial Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Even before I joined the Army, I had nothing but respect, I remember in the 9th grade we had a big 10 day field trip, from FL up the coast to DC, we went to the National Cemetery and I was just about bawling at the Wall, there was also a girl in my class who's father was a pilot that was shot down and killed in Vietnam before she was born, they had an honor guard come and take her from out group and escort her to her father's grave, first time she had ever seen it. To this day it makes me tear up a bit thinking about Mary going to see that.

I wish more people, especially the younger generations understanding what Memorial Day is about, not just a day off and cookouts.

A BOTL that I know from another cigar BB is a 'Nam Vet. He was stationed at Dak To around 1969, and fought in the siege of Dak To. Maybe 600 of our guys against maybe 5,000 NVA. NVA were the hard core ones, well equipped and well trained compared to the VC

We all should take some time this weekend to reflect and give thanks for those that made the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom.

Indeed. It is fitting and proper that we should do so.

I would add a little more on a personal note.

There are those to whom we have sent cigars to in combat zones who did not make it home. I'm particularly thinking of one of the first Dust Off coordinators who died when his helicopter took, I believe, an RPG.

There are men and women in harms way today so that I can enjoy the freedoms that allow me to have friends over to share cigars and eat well. Not all will make it back.

You have not died in vain.

Being a younger guy I feel that many in my (and the younger) generations don't appreciate this day as it should be. I feel lucky and proud that both of my parents are retired military and extremely proud to be able to say my Dad was a bugler at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for 25 years. I spent a lot of days there in the Summer. Although I am not military it influenced my life positively just by being around it as a kid. It gave me a huge respect to all who serve and those who gave their lives to give us what we have today.

With the times we are going through right now it makes me even prouder that I understand these things and haven't turned into one of those hipster, anti-American dumbass that is contributing to ruin this country.

Thank you to the guys here on the forum who have served and are currently serving and thanks to all the other veterans and active military personnel.

We should reflect every day but especially on Memorial day on the lives lost in order that we should be able to live the lives we do. God speed my fallen brothers, gone but never forgotten.

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

We will remember them.

I watched a memorial service for a local guy whose Phantom jet was shot down over North Vietnam. One of the most moving experiences that I ever witnessed. He was listed as MIA for a long time, until his remains were located and identified by the Vietnamese gov't. and returned to the U.S. sometime in the 1990's.

The greatest service you can do to those that gave their lives was to make sure you vote, it's not just a privilege it's your duty.
