Isn't Whistlepig a "finished" bourbon, or am I mistaken?

Default Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I believe everything to date from them has been Rye, but they are about to come out with their own bourbon. In terms of the Rye releases, some (like Whistle Pig 12, 15) are always finished, while others (like WP10) are never finished. The expression/label Whistle Pig 10 means that it is A) unfinished rye and B) at least 10 years old. Some stores in the last year or so have been able to get barrels that are much older than 10 years (I've seen up to 17 years), but unless the person picking the barrel took note of the distilled on date from the sample the bottle won't actually tell you what the age is, just that it's "at least 10 years old"

Ben nailed it, Steve...and I am not a fan of finished whiskey personally so I stick with the single barrel unfinished WPs.

Last night was a Beam night. Shocking, I know.

It is, Andrew, well just a couple months short I think. I'm down to swap samples, definitely would enjoy trying the JDBP Rye

Had a good week. Got an email last Friday that I won the spring raffle at Total Wine for the Old Forester 150. Saturday I stopped at Spec's and grabbed the new Pinhook Tiz Rye 5 year. Monday I picked up the Weller 107. Tuesday I got a call that I had the Elijah Craig 18 year. Wednesday was the EHT Small Batch. And today I got call that I had a allocated bottle of Elmer T. Lee waiting for me at the store. It was a really good week!

Killer week, Tony!

I headed to the city to grab some bottles I had already paid for some time back (Old Haymarket SiB pick, another Whistlepig 2 barrel blend pick). Owner let me try the Barrel Bourbon SiB pick, grabbed one of those too, never had Barrel before.

That is a nice collection of bourbon in two pictures! I did pickup two different batches of Barrell last week, have not opened either and have not tried it before but might have to change that here this weekend.

Went over to a friends house on Saturday, I'd seen pictures of his bar but never been there in person. Started with a Michters 20 next to a freshly opened 1972 Ezra Brooks 12yr ski boot decanter, and things went off the rails from there

A couple Old Carters, Pappy 10 next to 2017 WLW, there was some 2020 Old Forester Birthday in there. I brought a Willett 6 year bourbon (my first and only Willett) that I think stood up with the M20 and WLW as the best, but it's really hard to tell. Just fun to drink whiskey with whiskey people. This guy is the shining example of "befriend a store owner" and gets first dibs on a lot of cool bottles as they come in at srp

Hello. I saw today that a place in Newport Kentucky called Newberry Bros. Coffee/Prohibition Bourbon Bar is finally reopening their Friday/Saturday in person drinking part of the operation. Two hour visits and reservations required. (They have been EXTREMELY Covid conscious, you might say.) From what our local bourbon chasers (like Theo Cincy) tell me, the selection is unparalleled in this part of the country.

Sounds like a great night, Ben. I've only ever had the 4 year Willett, I am guessing it's just escalating goodness.

Any chance one of the Old Carters was American Batch 4 (139.6 proof)? I still haven't cracked mine, and they're already going for double what I paid for it a few months ago.

Brian, please get a picture of the bourbon list from Newbury Bros. when you go inside. Love to see it.

I probably won't be heading there anytime soon, Tom. Theo is your guy for that. He'll probably throw a group together for a visit. Heck, come down here yourself and join them. Kentucky is slated to remove all restaurant/bar Covid restrictions on May 28. You'll have no excuses after that.
