Default Airline Travel question

Does anybody know if TSA will give me any crap about bringing my cutter onboard? I would hate to loose my Palio!

Also, am I correct that a lighter cannot be brought onboard?

not true. Cigar cutters are allowed. Regular flame ighters are also allowed. Torch type lighters are not.

Quote:
In an effort to concentrate resources on detecting explosive threats, TSA will no longer ban common lighters in carry-on luggage as of August 4, 2007. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons.

Lifting the lighter ban is consistent with TSA's risk-based approach to aviation security. First and foremost, lighters no longer pose a significant threat. Freeing security officers up from fishing for 22,000 lighters every day (the current number surrendered daily across the country) enables them to focus more on finding explosives, using behavior recognition, conducting random screening procedures and other measures that increase complexity in the system, deterring terrorists. The U.S. is the only country in the world to ban lighters – all other nations, including Israel and the U.K., do not.

Lighters can go into checked bags if they are in the proper approved TranzPack type case, but not carry on. I see poker posted that this is not currently the case and soft flame lighters are OK. Given the ubiquitous nature of these lighters in CCs, I wouldn't bother with taking one.

Cutters .... well, as far as I can tell, things are so variable that you might get a cutter through 2 screenings and have it confiscated at the third. No need to take the risk, bring a punch or do what MRN does and bite the cap off.

Bring a crap cutter. Use matches while on vacation if possible..don't take the chance of some TSA worker abusing his authority and giving you a hard time.

I personally do not travel with my better lighters/cutters. I leave the Dupont at home and take a Bic.

Better safe than sorry.

I flew out to California last month and I took my Palio in my pocket along with this paper in my carry-on, just in case I had problems. The TSA (Tear Sh!t Apart) Screeners did not say anything about the cutter. Just remember some of those screeners think they are gods and can make up there own rules. If you have problems just stay calm, be professional about it and show them the paper or ask to speak to a supervisor. Torch lighters are prohibited.

Interesting- no hand grenades allowed either on board or checked!

Oh, be sure to put all your shampoo and stuff in zip lock bags, my bored TSA people decided to uncap them and leave them so, making a gooey mess of my toiletries bag and some clothes that got leaked on. Nice folks, those TSA %^$#!@*&

I usually place a cheap cutter in my checked luggage, and hook a cheap punch on my keyring. I'll take a cheap soft flame lighter in my carry on junk as well.

If any of it is stolen, I'm not out anything of value. And in my opinion, steal is exactly what some of these TSA people do.

I went on a domestic flight and forgot to pack my torch lighter, and had it in my pocket. They could have confiscated it, but they were nice enough to just let me drain all the butane and take it with me. /whew, that was a 30 dollar lighter.

I've flown all over and you can take just about any cutter you like. If you want to bring your nice torch lighter have an approved carrier. If you are traveliing in the US and any major city there are too many places to get a bic and a $1 cutter.

I've been lucky Moe; I've traveled checking in my full (yeah I know, not good) torch/flame Xikar and carrying on a cheapy cutter. It's good to know I can bring a better cutter on in my carry-on now though! And I'll likely just use matches in the future.

In Vegas, grab the giant box 'o matches at CarneVino in the Palazzo. Awesome big box of like 100 matches. Just go up to the hostess and ask for 'em.

I wouldn't risk the Ever Torch, they may want to light it to make sure it is a soft flame, and a very few of those TSA luggage monkeys may be smart enough to hit the button by mistake. I had one (pre dual mode) in my checked baggage and the bastards not only took it out of the pouch it was in, but disassembled it and threw the component pieces loose in there. Not pleasant trying to find a screw that is 3/16" long in your luggage.....
