Have kept mine at 63% for years...sticks seem to smoke a lot better for some reason. I'm with Stearns, haven't used a hygrometer in years...smoking great, straight burns...must be doing something right.

Well I have been keeping mine at 66-70. I will be rethinking it after my run in with mold. I am thinking probably the 62-65 range will be my new target range.....

Mold is bad. I am surprised you got it at that low a RH? I confess I have had a few run ins but usually when I transisition from dry AC Summer to wet Sacramento Fall before heater kicks in and I forget to lower the active humidity sensor point. I have it set around 67% but so many variables in my set up so mostly have to monitor by smoking cigars LOL.

Funny that I found this thread as I just drop my cabinet to 63 after finding the sticks to have a hard draw. I figured they were over humidified.

If the RH hits 80%, I'll have mold.
That's actual RH, not whatever a hygrometer may be reporting. I have to take into consideration how accurate the hygrometer is, and what it's normal deviation is.
Mind ya, that 80% used to be the old rule of thumb. Now Health Agencies are saying that if the RH stays above 70% indoors for extended periods of time, mold will almost certainly grow.
Notice that this stuff doesn't jive with the 66-70RH you mentioned.
That suggests that your hygrometers are wholly inadequate, way off, or flat out broke.
Lowering your setpoint is an excellent idea, but you may not be going low enough to make up for how screwed up your hygrometer is.
Good Luck, brother!!!

my humi is at RH 68%; if I want to smoke at 62% can I pull one out and let sit before smoking? How long (average) should it sit out?

thanks!

It depends on the ambient RH. I would not do this if there is a big difference between the RH you are storing your cigars at and the ambient RH... You do not want the RH to change too fast as that can cause the wrapper to crack.

Having said that, leaving them out for couple of days or dry-boxing them for a couple of days should be enough.

I was thinking of trying for a couple hours and see if that makes a difference before smoking without causing cracking damage.

I would guess a couple hours would have minimal noticeable effects, I would try overnight. But experimenting is part of the fun, so give a couple different time frames a shot and see what works best
