Default Odd Flavor

I finally got around to smoking the Foundry robusto I grabbed a few months back.

I can't say it was a bad smoke but it did seem doomed from the start. I had some serious expansion of the leaves causing splits and poor burn since I went from humi straight to outside.

What got me most was an odd flavor. Well, not so much flavor, as the smoke and retrohale didnt contain the smell but the ambient aroma had an iodine/betadine smell to it.

Has anyone else ever noticed this smell from a stick? Like I said, this has sat in my humi for months and no other sticks have this issue.

I've found that sticks that are too "moist" tend to taste somewhat metallic to me, or it could simply have been a dud.

I keep the humi between 60-65 so I don't think it was too moist. I'm chocking it up to the "unusual" characteristic the person at the B&M was hyping up.

I believe it's a euphemism for dog turd.

Probably too fresh and still contained too much ammonia

Andrew, how fresh is considered too fresh? The stick had been sitting at home for at least 4-5 months at least ( I don't recall exactly when I bought it but it it was before winter).

This, I always get bitter metal when my cigars are too moist.

I dry box regularly because of that.

Maybe I'm putting too much faith in the humidity of my humi being on the low end. It was a pretty thick gauge, like 58- or 60 I think. I'll try to plan ahead and dry box some of my thicker smokes for a week or so.
Is a week ample time?

I imagine that a couple of days should suffice, maybe not even that long.

I've had a couple of these and didn't care for the flavor either.

If the majority of your smokes taste ok, and this one was "off", I would attribute it to the stick...not the humidor. I keep mine 60%-65% as well, and will have the occasional dog turd.

Seems like too much is being read into the off taste, maybe it's just not a good cigar or to your tastes. If your sticks have been fine why go changing everything up, everyone is different.. .go with what has worked for you in the past.

I think it is the taste and smell of steel gear bands.
Get even...use the 'band' to bust the store window.

A bit extreme but made me laugh. I grabbed this on my first (and only) visit to this store. They has a nice selection but the sales associates were a bit too in my face for me to take it all in.

I'm not planning on changing up the humi, all other sticks are in great shape. I'll chalk this up to just not liking Foundry.

Thanks for all the responses and happy smoking.
