Default Bench Buffer/Polisher

I have a handful of estate pipes that I want to clean up. After having done a few by hand - I'm looking not to do that again. Anybody have one that they are using? Questions for those that do: 6" or 8". Variable speeds? Fixed speeds at what speed(s). Shields or no shields.

I'm sure I will use it for other items around the house that I currently hand polish (silver, brass, etc items) - but it's main purpose will be for pipe maintenance, cleanup and restore.

Thanks,

Ron

Low speed is the word on the street, Ronno; standard buffer/grinders spin fast and, even with flannel wheels, can strip nomenclature or details from briar and scar or melt stems given a moments inattention. I use a two speed buffer that isn't ideal but it's passable. Some guys mount a variable speed drill and go that route.

Wow. Excellent article/FAQ. Saved that sucker right to the desktop.

Never thought about the jeweler type buffers - I have already been scoping out sites that carry that Foredom BL-1 that he mentioned. I've got other things I can use it on aside from pipes.

Thanks!
