Kindle Paperwhite

I just got one of the new Kindle Paperwhites, the 300 dpi one with the light built in.

It kinda happened like this...
I'd been using Weeze's old Kindle and it was nicer than dragging my ipad about, mostly because I don't use my ipad for internet as much anymore.
It's tough to read it outside, and I've given up movies and tv for books again (I get tired with tv really fast), that's why I started using Weeze's Kindle.

Fast forward a month or so, and I see Peter had mentioned his Paperwhite and how much he loved it.
I asked him some questions about it, and blame it on him completely for costing me money.

The thing was 120 bucks, and coupled with Kindle Unlimited that I paid 80 bucks for on Prime Day, that's 200 bucks a year for a totally awesome reader and more books than I'll ever sift through.

Mind ya, Kindle Unlimited does not offer every book free.
Despite that, I went 10 for 10 on the first books I picked out and none cost a dime. That recovered the money I spent on KU already.
I picked out 10 books because that's the "limit". It's not unlimited in the sense that unlimited means unlimited.
I have to return books before grabbing new ones. Perfectly fine for me.

The backlight is glorious, I can read anywhere. I can't even put a dent in the battery. I've already bounced it around a number of times and it's not an issue, but I have a cover.

I read at least 10 books a month, lots of times more.
It probably costs me at least 700 bucks a year in books, bare minimum.
This whole setup, about $200.

If you do any amount of reading, take a look.
I think you'll be really happy you did.

(As I mentioned before, I own Amazon, so this may be a bit slanted.
Means nothing. Good stuff is good stuff.

Thanks Scott!! I have been thinking about buying the paperwhite as I do all my reading pretty much on my iPhone 6+. I like the idea of having one device for all my reading rather than being distracted by all my notifications. Also the benefit of being able to be outside or somewhere sunny and still be able to read is a huge.

How is it with special offers? I'm really inclined to get it without and with 3G but now living in NYC literally everywhere has wifi so I need to think about that too.

You own Amazon? So the stockholders should blame you that you've yet to turn a profit?

Good luck with the new device, and enjoy it in good health. Me, I'd consider one, if:

a) I had 200 bucks.
b) I didn't have several thousand "real" books already cluttering my life.

Christos, I have the "special offers" on mine.
They're targeted. It's Kindle related stuff, deals on books, and honestly, I'm happy to have them there. If you don't want them there in the future, you just pay 20 bucks.
But really, it's no bother. See what you think.
Here's how you remove them.
I agree 100% about just getting wifi. Ten years ago the 3G would have been necessary. Not any more.

Thomas, you have all that French stuff to read. Recipes or whatever.
You'd really like that Julia Child book with all the food in it, it's awesome.

I have thought about getting one and paying for the unlimited deal, but for me it wouldn't really be worth it. I used to read a lot, but these days I just don't read as much. I do use the Kindle app on my ipad to read free books. I signed up for a email list called bookbub and it sends an email everyday on super low or free books. It works for me. Everyone I know that has a paperwhite loves it though.

Greg, there are so many public domain books, it's crazy.
Some of the very best history books are those that were written shortly (30-50 years) after major events. I've found that if I look real hard, some aren't even emotionally biased. That's VERY hard to find among old history books.

I've read as many of the classics as I've been able to tolerate, and I've got loads of free ones waiting.

Even if you don't read a ton, these Kindles are timeless.
A first generation Kindle is much as wonderful as these new ones, so long as it had a cover with a light.
Furthermore, you and the wife can share, G. I guess amazon members can twin their accounts together now and share all their digital content among the family.
That's a big deal.

I bought one when they came out and use it constantly. I have over 800 books on it waiting to be read. The problem is I keep adding books faster than I read them, and on average I read 2 or 3 a week.

I get a daily email from an outfit called Pixels of Ink. They offer deals on downloads and highlight 4 free books from Amazon each day. The freebies include everything from cook books to classics to newer web based authors. Thanks to them I'm slowly running out of memory. On the Paperwhite that is.

I have a 2nd generation Kindle and really love the idea of the PaperWhite, but I hate having to carry more devices... Reading is better on the Kindle than any other device, but I find myself leaving it behind more and more and using my iPhone or iPad instead. The text quality on the iPhone and iPad are not near as good as the Kindle, but the hassle-factor of carrying that extra device outweighs the advantage of the Kindle for me.

Now, if Amazon ever came out with a color E-Ink tablet, then I would ditch my iPad in favor of it.

I am very tied into the amazon system, prime member etc. But I just don't get kindle unlimited. I can get free books on my kindle from my library. In fact I have access to several libraries because some these days allow non residents access. Like one I have a card too is a one time member fee of $5. My books come thru Amazon from the library.

I'm glad it works for you though.

I love my kindle paperwhite. Totally changed how much I read.

If anyone is into 80's references and arcade games, you've got to read "Ready Player One"

One of my all time favorite books.

I have the Nook HD+ and I love it. Beautiful HD display for movies and tv but I use it mostly for reading.

You guys thay have ereaders be sure to check out your local library. I use the app Overdrive made by Sony to check out books right from my library. Some libraries may use different apps but overdrive is so easy to use to check out and I use it to read the books too. They have the newest releases and lots to choose from.
