Default Makeshift Humidor

I have been using a Pelican case with a 69% Bovida pack for a humidor at work and find it excellent to keep the humidity almost perfect. Anyone else have a makeshift humidor? Or am I the only CHEAP guy? Also I use a sharpened.223 cartridge as a punch.

Lots of people use inexpensive containers as cases -- tupperware and rubbermaid containers just to name a couple..

The list of improvised humidors is probably endless!!! I've used tuperware, rubbermaid, regular cigar boxes inside of heavy duty plastic zip-lock bags.... I'm using simple plastic storage bins for part of my stash right now, and misting the inside of the bins a couple of times a week to maintain humidity. Only so many coolers that my wife will let me get away with, and I've reached that number! Don't have any .223 punches, but do have .270, .30-06 and .30-30 cutters.

Wouldn't all of our coolidors be considered makeshift humidors?

I thought those fancy wooden ones where makeshift. A cooler is just where cigars go. I have tried all kinds of boxes even a .50 cal ( which works great) can. Whatever you can find that fits your needs as long as it has beads in it and a good seal will work.

For a number of years, I simply used a nice size tupperware container with a couple of drymistat humidifier tubes inside with a hygrometer, and this arrangement worked very well. Since, I've acquired a desktop that holds up to 100 ct and a Coleman coolidor for boxes and singles (which is fairly well maxed at this point in time)

Prior to buying any sort of cutter, I used to use a common #9d or 10d nail on the head...

I used a jar for the longest time until my wife gave me a beautiful cedar lined humidor. God I love that girl...

After 5 days of use the Pelican 1120 is holding the humidity at exactly 70%. I am using a Xikar hygrometer (rectangular) and a 69% Bovida pack. Internal temperature between 71-74.

Question about the pelican boxes....do you take all of the foam out of them? I wasn't sure if there would be an odor that would cause off flavors in the sticks.
I might have one available that I thought about using as a humi.

I keep the bottom foam piece in mine. Flavors won't be much of an issue...keep the cello on.

Thanks Mac. I think I'm going to fit a piece of cedar in the bottom and possibly the sides. The foam in this box is cut so that you can remove it to fit the hardware you put in it (GPS in my case), so I think I can slide the cedar into the foam slots and it will stay in place.

I left the lid foam and bottom foam in mine. The foam had no odor. I cut a hole in the foam on the lid dead center to house the Xikar hygrometer. I use a 69% Boveda pack so I have no humidification devices. Seem to work like a charm. 70% humidity all the time.

Good Luck,

Z-Man
