too bad he is one of those kinda guys that could hardly care less about how dirty it is but I'm getting my own pipe very soon. However I did in the end enjoy it a wee bit more.

Id suggest if you are getting a Cobb (I love Cobbs) to take the filter out. It has no use IMHO.

It depends on the blend really, and what floats your boat. For example, I think a lot of aromatics especially the ones my local tobacconists makes are actually quite relaxing, rich, and flavorful. I also really enjoy English blends but two of my favorite blends are Aromatics. One is a rich, dark coffee over a light natural tobacco flavor background. I think it is perfect. Though stuff like blends from "Captain Black" and other readily available Aromatics are pretty tasteless.

And of course always make sure your pipe is clean. Think of pipes and cigars more like a relationship rather then always set guidelines which would please all smokers everywhere. You put a lot of time and patience into it and it will reward you with the same. In time you will find the tastes that you will enjoy.
