Basically, keeping some ash on your cigar helps the flavor. Constantly knocking off the ash and/or rubbing the foot can affect the burn and flavor. Worth a read.

One man's opinion.

Keeping some ash will keep the burn somewhat cooler indirectly affecting the flavor.
Rubbing the foot? I can't understand why anyone would do that.
