Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler married his longtime mistress Eva Braun in a Berlin bunker. The couple killed themselves the next day.

ABC’s "Wide World of Sports" premiered.

After refusing induction into the United States Army the day before (citing religious reasons), Muhammad Ali is stripped of his boxing title.

Japan's Naomi Uemura, traveling by sled dog, became the first person to reach the North Pole alone.

The final episode of "Battlestar Galactica" was aired on ABC.

Film director Alfred Hitchcock died at age of 80.

Steve Carlton, of the Philadelphia Phillies, became the first left-handed pitcher in the major leagues to get 3,000 career strikeouts.

Truck driver Peter Sutcliffe admitted in a London court to being the "Yorkshire Ripper," the killer of 13 women in northern England over five years.

Pitcher Roger Clemens set a major league baseball record by striking out 20 batters in a regular nine-inning game. He repeated his feat in 1996.

A Los Angeles jury acquitted four police officers accused of beating Rodney King. Massive rioting and looting ensued.

The first joint U.S.-Russian space walk was made by Jerry Linenger and Vasily Tsibliyev from space station Mir.

Darryl Strawberry was sentenced to 18 months in prison for violating his probation on a 1999 conviction on drug and solicitation of prostitution charges.

Oldsmobile builds its final car ending 107 years of production.
