I would just go with the cheap baking pan underneath, should solve all problems.

Well I cooked for the first time with the cast iron. The bacon went well but the eggs were a little more difficult. I broke 3 eggs

This is just a trivet for the countertop, so that hot pans do not melt into most counter tops. I would also use something like this so it does not scratch a granite countertop.
