At what point in stocks do you guys cash out? Assuming of course you're in it for the short run to make few $$ here and there

I tend to have a really backwards understanding of stocks..I will sell when I make a certain amount of $$ but for some strange reason I like to sit on the stock if it's losing with the idea it'll bounce back.

I'm slowly realizing that I sometimes have to sell it short and take what the market gives.
