Clifton is actually between 80 and 78 from what I remember.
In fact, it is cut by Route 3 and borders with Belleville and Nutley.
You would have to take the parkway south to then go to 78.

Nevertheless, don't expect any more excitement off 78 than off 80.
I would do the hour and a half ride to Philly.
