I'm pretty sure Grant didn't run for a third term in 1876. At that time presidents followed Washington's precedent that two terms were enough. There was an effort to nominate Grant for a third term in 1879, but it didn't pan out. His memoirs were written as he was dying, and published after his death in 1885.
