Raccoons

There was a recent thread about skunks. How about raccoons? Any ideas on how to keep them away? Do those coyote urine pellets work? Don't want to shoot them, really! Actually dumped a bhunch of cigar ash and smoked cigars in the area and that didn't seem to phase them at all. Any suggestions?
