Calibrating Hygrometer

Recently I picked up a small 20 count humidor from Cigars International that came with beads, cutter, lighter and a couple of sticks. I went to Wally World and picked up an hygrometer (thought it was an acurite, but I just looked and its a springfield something or other). Anyway, its been sitting in the humidor for over a week and it never showed above 50%. I am in the process of doing the calibration test with a cap full of salt and distilled water in a ziplock bag. Its been in the bag for over 12 hours and never got above 54%.
What should I do? Get another one or is it really going to show almost 20% off (showing 54% when its really 75%)?

Get another one... Your cigars are too expensive to trust to a cheap (and apparently broken) hygrometer.

The one I bought from wmart did the exact same thing. Never broke 50% after 24 hour salt test.

before you chuck it, make sure you can't adjust it

Wrap in a moist paper towel, it should read 100% after an hour or two.

if is is that far off I would return it, there is probably something wrong with the sensor. just my

I have one of each the accurite and a springfield, the best decision i made was to spend the 25 bucks and get a adjustable one with a boveda calibration bag.

Get your money back from walmart and make a order online,

I have two Caliber III's and love them. Batteries last a long time, and both read 75% after a salt test.

I'm not having much luck with these cheap walmart hygro's either...I took my old hygro (not sure the brand name, purchased a few years ago) and 2 of these walmart $6 jobs and stuck them in a bag to test.

After about 20 hours in the bag the old hygro reads 71% (previous test I did about 2 years ago had the hygro -5%, so this number was right what I expected). But the other 2 walmart hygro's read 63 and 55, they seem to take a lot longer to get an accurate reading.

My old hygro was always about 10-20% higher than the walmart ones, I think I'll leave them in another day to see if I can get close to the 75% mark but if I can't I think I might return them and invest in a better hygro.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've had the hygrometer for a couple weeks and I'm sure I don't have the receipt. I left in the bag all weekend and it got up to 60%.

I guess I will spend the money and get a more reliable dependable one.
