Frankly speaking I am a cigar smoker, who happens to enjoy pipe smoking also. Several months ago I bought this pipe that I thought would be good for me. As it turned out it was not. Since that time I have gotten a few other pipes and have never smoked that paticular one again. Today I gave that pipe to a friend at my work place. Is it wrong? Did I give up on that pipe to early? I really do not feel bad. I also know that my friend just went crazy over the pipe. So there you have it. How did I do for the first time on the pipe thread.

A pipe is a personal kind of object that is hard to get a handle on over the internet. You see a photo on-line and the pipe is or is not visually stimulating to you. Once you purchase the pipe and it arrives at your home, it may be a totally different experience, both visually and once you fire it up.
Sounds like your pipe wasn't a fit for you, but it sure made your buddy' a happy camper ![]() And now your old pipe has found itself a new home (and that's a good thing)...

No. I've had pipes I liked the looks of that just didn't smoke well and i've either passed them along or sold em.

If the bit is wrong in your mouth or the shape is wrong in your hand... pfui. That's it. It's very hard to get to like a pipe that somehow feels or smokes wrong. My only "give it away" prerequisite is to give it a good cleaning before passing it off.
It was nice to pass it along. It could be perfect for the next guy. Besides, well handled, a pipe can last for generations. We are as much owners as we are caretakers for the next generation.

Swabbing bristle pipe cleaners dipped in alcohol will sterilize a pipe stem; similarly, a clean stem soaked briefly in a dilute chlorine bleach solution (mind not to do this without protecting nomenclature printed on a stem) will be sterilized. Selling used pipes (or exchanging used pipes between friends) is a common practice. Sterilizing used pipes is a fast, simple process.

i hope "ethel" is joking... i think i can read a big kick of sarcasm in his post.
--- no, it's not wrong. you did the right thing. i've got a few pipes that i don't smoke anymore, just don't have a hankerin' to reach for them anymore. sometimes i gift them to new smokers, sometimes i'll put 'em up for sale/trade. basically, what everyone else (except Ethel) has said.

Estate pipes are great.
If you weren't getting out of that pipe what you expected, and your friend loves it, the world is good. As someone else stated, so have I sold and/or gifted pipes which no longer found themselves as a part of my regular rotation.

I think you did fine Troy. If a pipe just isn't enjoyable then it's usually going to get shelved. I think you'll get more pleasure watching your friend enjoy it then watching it gather dust bunnies.
I have heard talk of pipes turning around, smoke-ability wise, after some use, never ran into it being I'm new and slow goin, but if it's a style/fitment thing then there's no realy changing that ![]() Chris |
