You can get channels that are close with a cheap antenna. There is a website (http://www.antennaweb.org/) that tells you what you need to receive certain channels. I am missing two local channels with my cheapo antenna. Although if your TV has a a qam tuner you can leave your cable plugged in and get a lot of channels.
