PADI certified in 2006(ish). Went for a week of diving in the keys with the Boy Scouts. Was tons of fun, but for some reason I get super nervous thinking about being down that far now. Sometime I need to conquer that fear and get back with it.
As far as tips - Good mask / fins
will make the difference. The next is don't use your arms to swim, it is all about the legs! If you are looking to do it regularly, invest in digital gauges that will automatically log your dives (these are probably more common now than when I dove). And finally,
WATCH YOUR GAUGES
Don't be scared by that last comment, just make a habit of looking at PSI and depth every 5ish minutes and you'll be golden. I actually set my digital watch (that was good down to 90ft or so) to beep every 5 minutes and after about 3 dives it was habit. Made me feel much safer
