Well, no flogging here, but I have tats from the '80s....and they STILL look good.
As Dustin pointed out, it's like a car, you HAVE to take care of them. You don't, well, it's your own damn fault if they look like ^%$%.
I have 6....the latest one is about 8 years old...been kinda busy since 2001
