Default Re: Hd dvr

I have been a DirecTV customer from the start of service.

I own an original Tivo HD DVR that is still working. DirecTV wants to replace it for free as in a short while the HD channels that the original Tivo use are going away.

I also own a DirecTV HD DVR that I have had for about a year. Other than a major outage about a month ago that lost 2 days of recordings, DirecTV sent an apology, it was their fault in an upgrade, the only problem I have with the DirecTV DVR is it sometimes loses reception on one of the receivers. You have to reboot the DVR, which takes about 5 minutes for it to completely come back. This is a bit of a pain, but not horrible.

The Tivo unit has worked flawlessly, but it won't receive all of the new HD channels.

The only other big difference between the Tivo and the DirecTV DVR's is the Tivo seems to have unlimited season pass storage, while the DirecTV is limited to 50. At the moment the Tivo has 112 season pass recording setups. With the DirecTV DVR I have to constantly delete shows as they end their season, so I can add the shows that are starting. This is really a hassle and I have no idea why they have to have a limit of 50.

I have friends who have managed to build their own DVR's out of old computers and some custom software to talk to the receivers, but unless you are a byte head, it's not an off the shelf solution.

Good Luck!
