The deal with Kauri is basically the same as the Huon Pine across the ditch is Tasmania. Kauri is an endangered species and therefore cannot be harvested, however ancient (ie. bog) kauri is fair game since it's all well and truly dead already. There are several companies on the North Island up around Russell, KeriKeri and 90 Mile Beach that all specialize in extracting ancient kauri stumps and trees from farmers fields.

Absolutely beautiful wood, it has an amazing iridescent quality to it when finished that's almost impossible to capture on camera!!
