Test the draw and if you want it a bit more free then cut another 1/4 inch. You can also recut after smoking a bit if it starts to get tight. The reason for cutting at an angle is that you get more surface space exposed.

Need to get myself a decent cutter for the torpedos I have. I have been using a punch and been happy with it so far
