I think you did fine Troy. If a pipe just isn't enjoyable then it's usually going to get shelved. I think you'll get more pleasure watching your friend enjoy it then watching it gather dust bunnies.
I have heard talk of pipes turning around, smoke-ability wise, after some use, never ran into it being I'm new and slow goin, but if it's a style/fitment thing then there's no realy changing that
