All right, the marathon that is the Major League baseball regular season is in its closing mile, and it is finally time to talk that magic number that is that magic number. So we begin with:

New York Yankees, in the murderous "hate you and the horse Wade Boggs rode out on " AL East = 16.

Detroit Tigers, in the Alphonse/Gaston "you take it, no you take it please " AL Central = 20.

St. Louis Cardinals, in the "doesn't anybody else in this neck of the woods even play the game? " NL Central = 14.
