I believe anyone can sign for the package. It doesn't specifically have to be you. Also normally it gets taken back to the post office where you can just go to pickup or they'll try to deliver again. Or in some cases you can pre-sign for the package. Just leave the mail person a note with a signature to leave the package at the door and they should. This has been my experience with not being home to get packages...
