The West Coast precursors to UPS did not deliver their first package in Oakland until 1919, and after mergers with others the East Coast company that finally called itself UPS didn't start in major cities until the '30s. Between 1940 and 1959 they acquired "common carrier" rights to deliver packages between addresses both public and private. Not until 1975 did they begin servicing all 48 contiguous states.

FYI, I was born in 1951. President Eisenhower signed the Federal Aid Highway Act in 1956, which led to the building of our interstate system. Ya think maybe that had a little something to do with the growth of UPS?
