The idea for the show was based on the old True Crime novels. So, yes, each "season" will be it's own story line. Further, each story isn't required to fill X number of episodes. This is something new as well. HBO is allowing the producer to produce the story/season as he sees fit. If he needs 10 episodes, then great. If it's only going to be 6... go with it. The theory that TV and cinema are slowly being bridged is rather apparent with this show. IMHO, we may look back in 10 years at True Detective and say this was the primer for the next genre of TV.
I heard that mainstream cinema actors are absolutely lining up for an opportunity to star in one of these.
Of course, take this all with a grain of salt. This is just what I have read and heard from the radio/blogs. I am really excited to see what happens next.
